Barack Obama & John Edwards appeared to be beating up on Hillary Clinton in the debate. Hillary got a bit emotional during a town meeting and women flocked to her defense (and to the polls) in droves, issuing the "sure thing, Obama, a startling defeat.
In South Carolina, many white voters were put off by Bill Clinton's shenanigans and blacks were outraged. The result, a huge turnout and a two to one route of Hillary Clinton by Barack Obama.
It seems to me that voters are saying to the candidates: STOP IT! WE DON'T LIKE IT! AND WE WILL BURY YOU IF YOU PULL THIS SHIT AGAIN.
I want a hard fought, honest campaign. But dammit, I want something left for the general election. I do not want to store up a great deal of anger and outrage against a candidate who I may end up having to vote for in November.
I'm not a Clinton supporter but right now I could vote for Hillary Clinton if she is the nominee but it would be with a great deal less enthusiasm than I felt two weeks ago. If the Clintons continue to act as if the rules that the other candidates are following don't apply to them ("...on to Florida!")or continue to make coded racial appeals then a great many of the voters who have made this the most exciting primary season in a long time may stay home in November and that would guarantee a Republican victory.
I wouldn't count on Barack Obama being as good a loser as Howard Dean was in 2004. This is deeply personal shit and frankly, I could easily see many of the people Obama brought into the process staying home if he does not have enough dignity left after the Clintons have done with him to give Hillary his full and active support. As for Bill and Hillary supporting Obama if he wins. We'll see about that too.
