Obama draws over 10,000 to Birmingham, Ala. event today
Crowd grows as Sen. Obama prepares to speak
Posted by Birmingham News staff January 27, 2008 1:05 PM

More than 10,000 people are in and right outside UAB's Bartow Arena awaiting an appearance by presidential candidate Barack Obama, authorities working the event said.

It's a raucous crowd in the arena. Just about every seat is taken and music is blaring as people stream in just before the scheduled 2 p.m. speech.

The crowd mirrors the trend that has characterized Obama's campaign. Supporters are black, white, witnesses to the civil rights movement, and college students who can barely remember a White House without a Clinton or Bush.

"I think it speaks for the country that we are ready for a different kind of leader," said Stephanie Doss, 22, of Birmingham.

Evelyn Lindsey, 57, of Gadsden, skipped church to see Obama fresh off his win in South Carolina.

"I didn't expect to see a black candidate in my lifetime, but the hope was always there," Lindsey said.

17. It's really a phenomenon, isn't it? Those people in the crowd just want to touch him.
Last night, I saw people reaching their disembodied hands out towards him in the crowd,
just wanting to be able to say that they had that contact with him. He's a political rock star!

20. Yes, it/he is. Even the talking heads were blown away last night
by his victory speech. He embodies hope and optimism. It's so foreign to hear that kind of talk after the past 8 years with the dim one, but it's so welcome by many of us!

24. Scarborough is in love with Obama, in spite of himself. He couldn't find enough superlatives
last night and said that he gets lots of emails from conservative Republicans who are
basically flabbergasted by Obama as well.

Did you hear him?

I've been fascinated by the arms and hands, too. The other night I was in tears seeing the brown arms and the white arms reaching up from the crowd.

8. He is going to win Alabama. (And Oklahoma too.)
I'm shocked; he's really pulled this campaign together and out on the ground. Georgia is covered from north to south, east to west with Obama volunteers and people on the ground. It's an amazing thing to see.

38. Great! The community organizing smarts
come in handy. I'd read a lot about the organizations but I hadn't heard any Georgia reports.

This was predicted before he ever got into politics after he took on Project Vote in Chicago in 1992 and all sorts of records were set. From January 93 Chicago Magazine
Vote of Confidence
Nor can Obama himself be ignored. The success of the voter-registration drive has marked him as the political star the Mayor should perhaps be watching for. "The sky's the limit for Barack," says Burrell.

Some of Daley's closest advisers are similarly impressed. "In its technical demands, a voter-registration drive is not unlike a mini-political campaign," says John Schmidt, chairman of the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority and a fundraiser for Project Vote! "Barack ran this superbly. I have no doubt he could run an equally good political campaign if that's what he decided to do next."

Obama shrugs off the possibility of running for office. "Who knows?" he says. "But probably not immediately." He smiles. "Was that a sufficiently politic 'maybe'? My sincere answer is, I'll run if I feel I can accomplish more that way than agitating from the outside. I don't know if that's true right now.
Let's wait and see what happens in 1993. If the politicians in place now at city and state levels respond to African-American voters' needs, we'll gladly work with and support them. If they don't, we'll work to replace them. That's the message I want Project Vote! to have sent."

Organization on the ground is so important for even the best candidates.

29. alabma is one of the states I said long ago obama would win
cause of a huge black turnout....good for obama....but i give obama ala....ga....illinois and maybe 1, 2 at the most states on 2/5 hrc will win 16 to 17........cause the obama camp and the mediawhores will not be able to manipulate the voters in these other states as they did in south carolina...... now what did obama really win in south carolina?
