"more progressive than thou"

I think this is what left leaning Democrats say to one-up each other and I hear it around here all the time. Yesterday someone said it to me about a local candidate I am supporting (He isn't "progressive" enough) but I consider this person to be someone who never challenges people in power and is way to the right of me. So I threw it right back at him and told him his presidential candidate wasn't really a progressive either. neenahneenah

But I had to laugh- Isn't this sort of conversation roughly equivalent to religious "holier than thou" where people look down on each other for each others behavior and beliefs? I'm purer and closer to God than you...
