Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 07:31 PM by Omaha Steve

As long as Edwards gets the minimum 15% at the Feb. 9th caucus, Marta and I will both go on to the county convention as Edwards delegates. From there we have a very good shot to get to the state convention. From there on to Denver if elected.

2. COOL!
Have you been a convention delegate before? It can be really boring sometimes, but a lot of fun too.

7. Nope, we would be first time delegates at any level

Marta and I will both get labor backing us at the county and state level. With the gender neutral rule, we both have a good chance to go on to Denver.

This is sad. I feel bad for Edwards people. But it isn't working. There is no miracle that will suddenly propel him to victory.

20. Another one. Sheesh.
Edwards is bringing issues to the campaign. You should be supportive of that.

Hijacking a thread like this is pretty low, not to mention low class.

I would love to have the opportunity to be in the convention hall in Denver in any capacity. How exciting it would be to be a part of history in the making. Whatever that may turn out to be.

Good luck!

26. Are a candidate's delegates always chosen from their pool of supporters?
I am assuming that, in the event that Edwards does end up in the "king-maker" position, that you would vote for whoever Edwards makes a deal with and throws his support to. I'm not exceedingly knowledgeable of the convention's rules, so I was just curious as to what extent that a candidate could expect to be able to effectively "throw their support" (in terms of delegate votes) to the candidate of their choice in the event of a deal.

Thanks!

Jon

27. You are bound to your candidate unless....

You are bound to vote for your candidate unless they they release you to another candidate or to the candidate of your choice. It gets very tense when there is no sure first round winner. Look up President Wilson's nomination.

31. I guess my question is "how much influence would Edwards have...
...over his delegates' votes upon their 'release'? " Thanks!

36. Edwards can release his delegates to any one candidate

IF he so chooses. So IF two major candidates don't have a majority to win, Edwards will be holding a great amount of power with both Senators Clinton and Obama willing to deal for them.

Rules

On February 2, 2007, the Democratic Party published its Call for the 2008 Democratic National Convention<3>, which are the rules governing the convention. There will be 3,253 pledged delegates (committed to vote for a particular Democratic Presidential candidate), who will be selected by primary voters and caucus participants, and 796 unpledged delegates (free to vote for any Democratic Presidential candidate), colloquially known as superdelegates, which consist of DNC members, Democratic members of Congress and Governors, and other prominent figures in the party.<4> The final number of superdelegates will not be known until March 1, 2008. <5>

The pledged delegates are allocated among the states according to two main criteria: 1) the proportion of votes each state gave the Democratic candidate in the last three Presidential elections, and 2) the percentage of votes each state has in the Electoral College. In addition, fixed numbers of delegates are allocated for Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Democrats Abroad. Under the party's Delegate Selection Rules for the 2008 Democratic National Convention<6>, delegates are awarded via proportional representation with a minimum threshold of 15% of votes in a state in order to receive delegates. In addition, the delegate population must reflect the state's ethnic distribution, and at least 50% of the delegates must be women.

Even if it means switching your support to Obama.

Or in my dreams - a GORE-OBAMA ticket! B-)
