Dems worry that Bill Clinton has "inflicted lasting damage on his wife’s presidential candidacy."

After Obama Victory, Clinton’s Camp Seeks Gentler Role for Ex-President

By PATRICK HEALY
Published: January 28, 2008

Democrats inside and outside the Clinton campaign on Sunday debated and in some cases bemoaned the degree to which former President Bill Clinton’s criticism of Senator Barack Obama last week had inflicted lasting damage on his wife’s presidential candidacy.

<...>

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign team, seeking to readjust after her lopsided defeat in South Carolina and amid a sense among many Democrats that Mr. Clinton had injected himself clumsily into the race, will try to shift the former president back into the sunnier, supportive-spouse role that he played before Mrs. Clinton’s loss in the Iowa caucuses, Clinton advisers said.

But Democrats said it was not clear whether the effects of Mr. Clinton’s high profile could be brushed away by having him modulate his campaign style. They said Mr. Clinton had upset some of the central themes of Mrs. Clinton’s campaign, including her appeal to women and her assertions that her time in the White House during the 1990s amounted to vital experience rather than a link to a presidency defined as much by scandal and partisan divisions as by its successes on fronts like the economy.

<...>

After a week of all-out campaigning by Mr. Clinton in South Carolina, where Mrs. Clinton came in a distant second to Mr. Obama, there is also fresh concern among some advisers that Mr. Clinton’s visibility has dented her argument that she has the best experience for the job.

<...>

Representative Charles B. Rangel of New York, a leading supporter of Mrs. Clinton, said on Sunday that Mr. Clinton was going to pull back. “He’s got to,” Mr. Rangel said. “The focus has got to get back on Hillary. For all that he cares about his wife, this has to be her election to win, and it’s become too much about his role.”

1. The Jesse Jackson comment went way over the line.
They could *try* to explain away the rest, but that was just clear and callous, and a smack in the face of all voters - not just those in SC.

Good luck trying to tie Bill down, he's a wild one, and just doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut. It's all about the Clintons, and god help anyone that gets in their way... Until they've gone too far, and look at what it's cost them. With Kennedy out, I'll be looking forward to an full week of endorsements for Obama.

2. Way too far. Out of nowhere
he mentions Jesse Jackson. One of the most desperate race-baiting attemps I've ever seen. And never from a Democrat.

3. Makes you wonder how long that comment was stewing
in his mind... just waiting for the perfect opportunity to throw it out there.

Sickening :(

4. Once again I'm just amazed that anyone could be
at all surprised by this.

5. Everything up to that point... I had prepared for, or accepted to be coming.
That was the head turner for me. I almost got whiplash when I heard him say that. I missed the lead up, so it totally caught me off guard.

6. Agreed - and what really surprises me is...
Bill is way too damn smart to NOT know exactly what he said. I don't get that kind of blatant code talk.

I had always admired Bill's presidency, and in many ways he is a brilliant man --- but his behavior during Hillary's campaign has reminded me that smarts and wisdom are very different things.

Bill does not have the wisdom to know when to shut the fuck up!

His remarks have not only turned the focus on the former president (rather than Hillary), but it has come across as overtly egotistical and power hungry. The race is now about the "Clintons" - and that in and of itself, undermines Hillary.

I think Hillary will eventually lose this thing, and I believe Clinton's Jesse Jackson remark will go down as the beginning of the end.

18. Mentioning Jesse Jackson is "over the line?"

This is why I fear Obama getting the nomination.
He'll get squashed like a bug by the republicans.
I got news for ya, politics is a tough business, if
BO and supports get bent out of shape about this, you
havent seen anything yet.

7. I think that the damage is done.
On both sides. Now that the aspect of race has been introduced, will it ever go away? And now that the question of "who's really running here" has been introduced into the Clinton campaign, that too is unlikely to go away.

It's like that "Obama is a one-man muslim sleeper cell" e-mail that never seems to run out of ignorant victims.

10. "It was after her third-place finish in Iowa that Mr. Clinton turned much more aggressive."
This is bullshit. Bill's attack dog role was evident long before then. The infamous Charlie Rose roll-of-the-dice interview was December 14, a full three weeks before Iowa. He has been talking shit about Obama for six weeks now.

12. Historically, every campaign has adjusted when hit with a big loss.
I'm a Clinton supporter and I truly believe this was set up that way. Bill gets some digs in and then gets told to shut the heck up so that it looks like the campaign is doing something. Look back if you dare and you will see that all our candidates have done this historically. It looks smart and looks like the candidate herself (or himself) is taking charge.

Just my humble opinion.

20. Add to that the fact that MSM has been trying to demonize Jesse
forever. Now that they have to choose between Jesse and Bill, they are defending Jesse's honor.

It would be funny if it weren't so nauseating.

21. So when they endorsed Hillary, was that "pimping war," or was that "demoralizing the left?"
