Okay - about the handshake that DID take place --
what do you suppose Ted and Hillary said to one another?

It must have been uncomfortable for them both.

1. No doubt...
I'm sure that Ted felt like an ass and Hillary felt like shit....

maybe a 'hey...nice to see you' with the "oh Gawd I can't wait unti this is over" running through each of their heads?

6. Yeah,I'm sure she was disappointed......
but she handled it well I thought. She's really taken a beating....often unfairly.

3. I think they were cordial to each other......
they've been in politics a long time, and know you have to be diplomatic despite differences.

I had the thought tonight, that maybe Bill is trying to ruin Hillary's chances....for whatever reason....maybe he's not even aware he's doing it.

5. Do you think so? These people are pros. This is what they do.
They negotiated this deal for weeks in all likelihood and, this was the outcome.

It's not like having a tiff with your best friend. It's not personal.

9. It was a blunt force trauma. Don't minimize it.
It was meant to do damage. And Hillary's expression in that photo has so much in it, an overeagerness that can be a compensation for the fear that you will be completely snubbed, but you know you have to go over there anyway, and the relief at seeing Ted's hand come out to take hers.

Don't ever pretend these aren't human beings with human feelings.

14. For once I agree with you
Ted didnt endorse he jumped in. They are friends or were at least. It will leave a bruise for both of them I think.

10. In theory it's not personal, but in reality ...
It's like if your boss promotes somebody else instead of you. It's not personal, but it'd hurt your feelings nonetheless. I don't think we can turn off our feelings as well as we'd like to at times.

And....if I was the boss and I'd known and worked with you for years, we'd developed a friendship, but for whatever reason I felt this other person -- with whom I didn't have such a history -- would do a better job and I promoted him/her over you, I know I'd feel uncomfortable.

12. agree...
and the boss would feel bad knowing that the person was so uncomfortable and disappointed.

I don't think Ted Kennedy is gleefully wanting to hurt Hillary Clinton..I do believe it was awkward for him too.

13. Sure, gateley, and that's part of the job.
You learn to deal with emotional reactions. They aren't the main course. The media presents these negotiations as if this were a soap opera. It isn't. It's a political campaign.

17. It has nothing to do with that, if a stupid endorsement makes them uncomfotable
Edited on Tue Jan-29-08 06:19 AM by still_one
then I damn well wish this lousy war would make them ALL UNCOMFORTABLE

How does Congress, and the country for that matter feel about being responsible for the deaths of over 100 thousand people?

15. I think it was just a photo op for her...she wanted that photo to balance the endorsement.

16. Uncomfortable
What I think we lose sight of is that this battle for the nomination isn't about holding grudges and making enemies. Clinton and Kennedy are two Democrats, colleagues, and friends. Kennedy endorsed Obama for one reason - he thinks he has the best change of uniting America in common purpose, with a sense of excitement that's been lacking in recent years. It doesn't mean he hates Hillary - just that he thinks Obama is a stronger candidate for the general.

That said... It didn't take Obama long to throw that endorsement out the window. This looks bad, and there'll be no spinning it. The "You're likable *enough*" got Hillary some votes, this will get her even more. On the night, of all nights, Obama could afford to be magnanimous, he blew it big time.
