Silence, For Now, From Al Gore
Silence, For Now, From Al Gore
28 Jan 2008 04:42 pm

With Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's endorsement of Barack Obama, the list of star-aligning endorsements shrinks to about two: former Sen. John Edwards, if he decides to drop out, and, of course, former Vice President Al Gore.

At this point, he has not told any of his political advisers and friends if he is considering an endorsement. During the past year, he has spoken privately with all three leading Democrats.

An adviser said that Mr. Gore had long ago decided to lay low once the Democratic delegate selection contests began so as not to interfere in the race.

Last night, a close adviser said "nothing has changed" with regard to Mr. Gore's decision to keep mum about an endorsement.

7. Not so...
Check out his videos on Current.com. Last week he aired a video endorsing gay marriage on the domestic side. Internationally, he was at Davos in Switzerland last week and spoke most urgently about the poles loosing their ice faster than earlier predicted.

He's very much still around. Of course. If you were to judge by the current state of DU these days, there are only three people to discuss: Clinton, Edwards and Obama. (Notice how I placed them in alpha order).

4. Smart move. I would have been ok with him endorsing Edwards but this is fine.
It's better for Gore to stay out of the fray and away from the fireworks- for the sake of the party and also for the remote (I can dream, right) possibility of being drafted at the convention in case of a deadlock. I have no idea what the chances of this really are but it is the one way that we can guarantee a landslide victory. In fact, as I've said all along, a Gore- Obama ticket would be impossible to beat.

5. Al is doing the smart thing.
1) Al got his fingers burned endorsing Howard Dean in 2003. He knows that endorsements don't decide primaries, or stop candidates from slipping up.

2) Al Gore is getting ready to support the Democratic ticket and encourage the eventual nominee to adopt an ambitious plan to deal with the climate crisis. Endorsing one of the candidates would make it more difficult for Al Gore to work with either of the other 2 candidates.

3) One year from now, Al Gore will offer his services to help the next President address the climate crisis.

6. Good for him
Let him stay above it all - he'll help whoever the candidate is in November. That's when he'll be needed.
