Caroline Kennedy: "I called Chelsea."
On GMA today Charlie Gibson asked Caroline Kennedy if she had called Hillary Clinton about her intention to support Obama. See link here: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Vote2008/story?id=4207911&page=1.
Caroline said very quietly, "I called Chelsea." She didn't elaborate.

I was struck by the image of these two President's daughters, beloved and respected by just about everybody, having such a discussion. It had to be uncomfortable for both of them.

My hat is off to Caroline Kennedy for making the call to Chelsea. I think it was the right thing to do...

1. I think so too, but maybe calling Hillary would have been better.
But anything besides a surprise would be better.

3. I think she called Chelsea because they have an affinity because they
were both presidential daughters.

6. Can you ever in a million years imagine the Bush twins doing anything
that classy? Hah!

10. If it were drunk-dialing at 3 am, wanting a ride home, you bet...
But something classy? Nah.

2. Nobody owes anyone a call before they endorse. It's mere formality. n/t

16. Caroline was raised right. She's a lady, just like her gracious mother.

4. It doesn't surprise me that she called Chelsea
in 2004, they both campaigned for Kerry together, and it seemed to me that they had a friendship of somekind.

5. Nominated.
I like the idea of people being able to support different candidates, but being able to communicate with one another. I think that both Caroline and Chelsea bring dignity to democratic politics.

8. Yep, the way Caroline said that just tugged at my heart!
And I can feel the heartache of Chelsea, hearing what Caroline had to say. A difficult thing, for both of them, IMO.

9. Compare the Bush twins
To these daughters and they are heads and shoulders above the Bush Twins. This speaks volumes in my opinion.

12. That's because the Bush twins' heads & shoulders are usually somewhere near the floor.

11. Sounds sensible to me
Caroline did not want to bother Hillary who is very busy or she considers herself as having more in common with Chelsea. I think Caroline is a class act. She learned a lot from her mother, another woman with a great deal of grace and manners.

13. Caroline has been almost like an older sister to Chelsea
since the Clintons were in the WH. She probably called Chelsea because she must know how hurt Chelsea must have been by Caroline's endorsement of her mother's opponent, particularly since Caroline barely knows Obama.

14. It was a nice gesture
But I'm gleeming the call didn't go well, which would be unfortunate.

17. I'm sure it was awful, but I think Caroline handled it well.
I think she wanted Chelsea to know before the rest of the world knew. And I think Chelsea had inside info sayingthat it would be happening. So Caroline wanted to let her down as easy as possible (pretty hard given the circumstances).

A difficult thing indeed...

19. Probably. But since she knew Chelsea, it was a good thing she called her.
Look, this thing works both ways. She obviously wanted to soften the blow, but she obviously felt strongly about her position on Obama. I don't think it was an easy thing to do, which is why I admire her for doing it. I feel for Chelsea who must have been weary from the beat downs on her mother's campaign. My guess is that Chelsea thanked Caroline for giving her a head's up, even as she grieved so badly over her mother's loss.

It was a sad situation all around. I wish we knew more about what happened...
