Dismissing people who watch "The View," "Tyra," "Oprah," etc. isn't smart
I've seen quite a few posters on here doing this. ALL kinds of people watch these shows, and many of them get their only real news from shows like "The View."

1. Agreed....
I don't like this fact, but it remains a fact nonetheless.

My mother is not a news or political junkie. She's not completely ill informed and reads/watches a lot of local news. But for bigger picture national political issues she gets a lot of stuff from these shows.

Again, I don't like it but me (or anyone for that matter) bitching about it or being condescending isn't going to make it not so.

6. I actually have less of a problem with "The View" than some of them
At least MOST of the people on the show are intelligent and thoughtful... even if they don't always act that way!

But, viewers will sit up and pay attention if Barbara Walters, Oprah, et al talk about certain things. There's no way Oprah didn't help her old friend Maria's husband win the CA governorship.

Stumbled onto it by accident and was very happy I got to see the man the rest of the media ignore.

3. Exactly...
We don't have to like it, but it is wise to acknowledge it. And, unfortunately, what they may be getting are mere impressions, rather than factual news (sadly, I guess the same can be said for shows labeled as news shows).

It's good for us and the candidates/staff to keep this in mind.

It's a small echo chambers of poliics junkies - who happen to be dems (and a few who pretend to - in order to stir the pot)

7. Lot of snobbishness on DU
For all the talk of liberal ideas, worry about the masses, the working people, there is actually
really not much concern. What I see is derision and an attitude like " I'm better than you are, you poor peons" So, if you watch any other station other than C-Span or PBS, you are a low-class "moran".
Oh... if you don't have a tv... that's even better.

10. Stop with the Gender-baiting threads. No thoughtful person would disrespect daytime television.
However, one could also say that most daytime programing is not representative of in-depth analysis or anything that would approach investigative journalism. That's not sexist, but a mere fact. However, it's good entertainment, and MOST don't disrespect it. :eyes:

You're just IMO, trying to stir up Gender baiting on behalf of HRC (heroine candidate, one each) but it's sadly transparent.

12. Very true!
I know many people who get all their news from these shows. My sister for one, if they say it on the view it has to be true. Thankfully she does not like Elizabeth's view but the more Liberal ones. The older gentleman a few doors up from me was a bushbot until he retired and started watching the view,LOVES Whopi, no longer likes Bush, so I truly believe they do move minds. Oprah has a huge following that will do what she says sorta like the ditto heads are for Rush. If you are home during the day you probably watch some of these shows.

Did anyone catch Whoopi LYING about what went down with the handshake? She said Hillary reached for Obama's hand and he walked away. How can they get away with such flagrant lying? Whoopi blashed Obama saying he was petty and unclassy. I hope the Obama campaign catches this and issues them a statement about their lie. Maybe i'll email them.

There are a wide variety of people who watch a wide variety of television. What shows they watch isn't a good way to gauge their political IQ. (after all, I watch Morning Joe and yet I am not a neo-con  ... oh God ... did I just type that???)

32. I know this link is from the NY Post, but it brings up the other 'quirky'
comments Shepard has made. If you'd like a more reputable source google away! :hi:

http://www.nypost.com/seven/01152008/tv/view_rings_belle_658254.htm

January 15, 2008 -- 'VIEW" co-host Sherri Shepherd went flat- earth again yesterday. Seems she forgot that legendary soul singer Patti LaBelle is black.

<snip>

"There is a picture of me with Shirley Caesar, who is like the black Patti LaBelle," bragged Shepherd.

There was a second of stunned silence before her co-hosts, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and even Barbara Walters piled on.

"Patti LaBelle is black!" said Golberg.

<snip>

Shepherd, who replaced Star Jones this year, has been dropping increasingly strange comments since she began appearing on the show in September.

In one instance, she insisted Christianity was older than ancient Greece, and even Judaism. Earlier, she said she didn't know if the world was flat or round.

Maybe that Sandy Patty person or something. What a bizarre thing to say. I think she mostly doesn't know how much she doesn't know. Poor thing. She's the example of education being important for the sole purpose of being educated.

24. Like It Or Not Most People Aren't Political Junkies
Most of the population don't know where any of the candidates stands on the issues. Most people don't know Maxine Waters. A lot of people can't name their representative. Sadly, they may not even know their senators. They wait until someone tells them who to vote for. DU and people posting on blogs are not representative of the general population.

45. Count me with the 'snobs'.

"But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite each of you to sit down in front of your television set when your station goes on the air and stay there, for a day, without a book, without a magazine, without a newspaper, without a profit and loss sheet or a rating book to distract you. Keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that what you will observe is a vast wasteland."--Newton N. Minow

http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/newtonminow.htm

Newton Norman Minow (born January 17, 1926) is an American attorney and former Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. His speech referring to television as a "Vast Wasteland" is cited even as the speech approaches its 50th anniversary...

Reportedly, Robert F. Kennedy, brother of John F. Kennedy, and Minow frequently talked at length about the increasing importance of television in the lives of their children during the Kennedy presidential campaign. Thereafter, it came as little surprise that after the election Minow eagerly pursued the position of FCC Chair...

While some applauded his "vast wasteland" assault on commercial television as a welcome criticism of excessive violence and frivolity, others criticized it as an elitist, snobbish attack on programming that many viewers enjoyed and as government interference with private enterprise. The S. S. Minnow of the 1964–1967 television show Gilligan's Island was sarcastically named for him to express displeasure with his assessment of the quality of television...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton_N._Minow
*

I spent 11 days in a hospital last summer & was at times unable to read. For most of the time there was another person in another bed in the room. The TV was on almost all the time.

I couldn't believe the world that was being presented on TV. It bore so little resemblance to what I think of as 'reality'. It was like 'Main Street, USA' at Disneyland compared to a real main street.

I saw some or maybe all of the shows mentioned. Daytime TV was particularly gross.

I watch about 6 or 8 hours of TV a week. More during the NBA playoffs. I like the hour-long crime shows:the Law & Order(s), Criminal Minds, the original CSI & a few comedies: 30Rock, Earl. I'm not immune to TV.

Getting your 'news' from daytime chat fests seems insane to me. Most of the hosts, the guests & the audience don't seem to know very much. They're just chatting away until an ad comes on.
