ELECTABILITY: What is the demographic make up of the US Senate?
I looked at this question when I tried to figure out who to support out of these three IDENTICAL Clintonian candidates.

For me the issue is electability because I think they're all good enough to be president. I would feel queasy with Obama in charge of national security but I hate pukes so I'd pull the lever anyway.

At first I supported Edwards because he is a white male and has an obvious advantage there. Then after Clinton campaigned for a few months I noticed she overcame the weak female rap and was seen as the heavyweight on national security so switched to Clinton because she would neutralize the puke on 9/11 and destroy them on domestic issues.

I re-calibrate my choice every day based on any new information. Today I looked up the Senate demographics on WIKI:

1 black (Obama)
16 female
crapload of white males

So in state wide elections blacks and females are harder to elect. It can be done but the proportions are low compared to the overall numbers in the population.

Female senators represent 1/3 of their actual proportion.
Black senators represent (correct me if I'm wrong) but about 1/18 of their population
white males represent a crapload more than the actual population

There are other factors that make particular blacks and particular females more electable but there is still information in these numbers for anyone making their decisions on electability.

2. I admit that it is one factor I consider and I'll go with the white male if
if I don't think the others can make it even if they have a slight advantage on issues in my mind.
