BREAKING: John Edwards is dropping out.
Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 09:35 AM by Meldread
As per MSNBC on Morning Joe, by Chuck Todd.

I'm sorry Edwards supporters. I hoped he would make it until after Super Tuesday. He will deliver a speech about poverty in New Orleans.

UPDATE:
DENVER - By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer

Democrat John Edwards is exiting the presidential race Wednesday, ending a scrappy underdog bid in which he steered his rivals toward progressive ideals while grappling with family hardship that roused voter's sympathies but never diverted his campaign, The Associated Press has learned.

The two-time White House candidate notified a close circle of senior advisers that he planned to make the announcement at a 1 p.m. EST event in New Orleans that had been billed as a speech on poverty, according to two of his advisers. The decision came after Edwards lost the four states to hold nominating contests so far to rivals who stole the spotlight from the beginning -- Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.

3. Yes, it's true.

I'm sorry, I'm an Obama supporter, but Edwards was my close second choice. I had hoped he would stay in until the convention to get his message out, but I guess he just ran out of money. There was also talk, though, that Obama and Edwards were working out a deal - possibly Edwards as Attorney General. We'll see. I hope so - Edwards needs a place in our parties future.

9. This makes me sick. Very disappointed he's not keeping his word, if true.
He said he'd be there thru the convention. Today's a fund-raising day. It's a big let down.

However, yes - I wasn't a supporter of Edwards, but I was glad he was there getting his message out. I am shocked and disappointed at this information. I want to know what suddenly made him decide to drop out, but I have a feeling that a deal might have been struck with Obama... or he just ran out of money and couldn't go any further.

It's bad, because he had an important message to get out. However, he is going to give a speech later today. It might all be a lie by his campaign to get massive free media coverage. :silly:

6. Well... I'm with Mister Dreamy...
...and I welcome you to the dreamy side. :P

Seriously, though - I think he's going to give a great speech in New Orleans.

Turn on Morning Joe right now - they are talking about him.

4. He fought a brilliant fight
Won several debates, and pushed the other candidates to really think about the class structure in American life.

A very good man.

7. Yes, it's true.
His voice will be missed in the debates - he won most of them, IMO. I wish Obama debated as well as he gave speeches.

10. Being Obama's attorney General
he could do more good than just giving speeches on a campaign trail. (IMO)

15. Maybe he'll be like Al Gore...
He could possibly do more good as an advocate for the poor than as president.

16. Well there has been buzz about him being Obama's Attorney General.
...and there are people who say it scares the shit out of corporations even more than if he were President. As AG he'd actually have direct power to go after them. I hope he gets it.
