Seduced and abandoned.
While everyone celebrates Edwards dropping out, I'm wondering who the hell we can believe when a promise is made. I believed him when he said he'd fight the corporations/insurance companies for all Americans, but he didn't even finish the fight for the nomination. If this drop-out news is for real, it's sickening. I'd really like to have my donations returned because I needed that money but gave it to him anyway because I fell for his promises.

End of whine.

4. You can o for christ's sake all you want, but the fact remains: he lied.
If that doesn't bother you, shame on you.

17. He addressed the health issue, said that despite her health problems --
they decided together this was the mission of their life. Suppose he'd been elected. Would he have stepped down had her health taken a turn for the worse? They're the ones who said it was not going to be a factor and I believed them.

13. your self pity is unseemly, I have to say
what is he going to say when running, and what is he going to believe when running? that he's just going to see what happen? no, you can't devote 22 hours a day 7 days a week for something that you half believe.

he is an astonishing political figure, who has given us the best candidacy in a long, long time.

you want someone to blame - try the media who chose to focus on the 'historic' race, rather than the one of substance.

get a hold of yourself.

And I do blame the media for ignoring him. I blame him for not keeping his word, if indeed he is dropping out.

Politics is a gamble. Sometimes your candidate wins, sometimes s/he loses, and sometimes s/he drops out.

You want your money back????

9. Most of us are grieving his dropping out, not "celebrating."
Do you think he spent your donations on fashion accessories?

No, he paid staff and paid for ads that didn't bring him enough votes.

He probably recognized he didn't have enough $ to compete effectively on Super Tuesday.

Would you have wanted him to solicit more donations and go into debt only to come in a distant third due to lack of coverage and lack of funding?

I would hope you could be thankful for the hard work he's put in and glad that he can again relax with his family.

14. I don't understand that, either.

"That's the question you have to ask yourself. Who will stand with you when it really matters?"

Edwards said that line repeatedly as he stumped on TV and across America.

My biggest problem with Edwards was that I liked his rhetoric, but it didn't match his voting record. And this seems like another case of that same sort of say one thing, do another politics. I still really liked Elizabeth Edwards, and frankly, wish I could've voted for her.

24. I gave the money based on what he said he'd do. Over and over he said it.
I have exactly $200 left each month after I pay for my health insurance. The donations were a big deal to me and not given lightly. Far from petty to find out you've fallen for a bait 'n switch.

32. I said you misunderstand what is possible.
Clearly, if he is out of money or other conditions make it impossible to continue, he can't do it.

His intent was clearly to stay in through the convention. Life may have prevented that.

34. Some people believe what our candidate says.
So sue us.

And I have no doubt in my mind that John Edwards meant what he said at the time.

But circumstances change...

I would be interested to hear what Edwards has to say about this.

22. I understand your feeling betrayed by the unkept promises.
A lot of people on this thread are jumping on you, but I know what you mean. They can jump on me, too. Edwards said, many times, that he was in this all the way to the convention. He was getting record contributions online, and he promised to stay in. I believed him, and I believed that he would keep his fight and his message out there. I am sorely disappointed.

26. Stand in line
I get my money back from Senator Shelby from Alabama first. Years ago when he was a Democrat and running as a Democrat I held my nose and gave him money. Then, after winning, he switched to the GOP. I want my money back.

That's just the danger of donating to politicians. We do it because we hope they will win or support our views better than the other person, but in the end, it is a gamble.

30. All of us who support Edwards are shocked
but don't jump to any conclusions. We don't know what is going on until he tells us. For all we know it could be that his wife's health has taken a turn for the worse. Has anyone seen Elizabeth in public lately?

It's one hell of a shock, but JE is a man of honor and integrity. Whatever happened, he has not abandoned his ethics or us. Let's not be part of the feeding-frenzy and just wait to hear from him.
