Even with the abetting of the MSM, how good is McCain as a
campaigner really. His track record is not so good IMO. In a big general election? Much of his current status is name familiarity, strength among INDs, and war hero status. But can he effectively argue his conservative agenda out on the campaign trail? And with the GOP's army of Fundies pull out all the stops to wage a ground war for him?

Just looking for a bright side.

I am not convinced that it is over yet.

5. Maybe...but Willard seems to have "authenticity" problems and
doesn't connect much with even GOP voters. It may be tough to flog him all the way to the nomination especially with the MSM so gaga in love with the Ol' Straight Shooter.

2. He's going to be 72 and had melanoma twice, and his own party colleagues think
he's too nuts to be trusted with nukes. I think there's plenty of "bright side".

3. Bush wasn't an effective communicator either.
none of that carp matters. the storyline is written - straight-talking, maverick war hero versus conniving, phony, power-hungry shrew. that's a tough one to win.

4. Read his book.

McCain DOES have temperament problems, and he almost totally lost control over his emotions during the Vietnam normalization process when Kerry led that Senate group and its investigation into POW-MIA matters.

In McCain's book he stated that if it hadn't been for Kerry the work never would have been done, and that Kerry helped him through the emotional part of the ordeal when he was near breaking down.

I always wondered what that chapter sounds like on the audio version of the book.

I guess McCain is lucky he won't have to debate Kerry, but I imagine Kerry can coach Obama on a few of McCain's more 'sensitive' issues.

that his party is currently going through an identity crisis. It's conservatives against fundies against...well everyone else. They have time to pull it together...but I don't know if they want to.

The vocal asshats like Rush trash McCain regularly.
I agree that he is less than stellar as a campaigner.
Picture him in a debate with either Hillary or Obama.

And, as silly as this is going to sound, I don't a lot of Reps would be as unhappy with a Dem presidency as people think, for one reason only. The economy is crap. I think there is something to be said for the "let them fix it" argument.
