ABC NEWS SMEARING BILL CLINTON - the "slow down our economy" quote in full
ABC News has been running a story about Bill Clinton saying we need to "slow down" our economy and cut down greenhouse gas emissions - with a clip to prove he said it. What's missing? Context.

The video is here. Watch it.

Then read the context in which the videoed section featured:

And maybe America, and Europe, and Japan, and Canada — the rich counties — would say, 'OK, we just have to slow down our economy and cut back our greenhouse gas emissions 'cause we have to save the planet for our grandchildren.' We could do that. But if we did that, you know as well as I do, China and India and Indonesia and Vietnam and Mexico and Brazil and the Ukraine, and all the other countries will never agree to stay poor to save the planet for our grandchildren.

Context makes a world of difference. A two-second clip completely distorts his meaning.

Question: why is the M$M pushing such an obvious distortion? Having killed off Edwards' candidacy by ignoring him, are they now going to destroy Hillary through smears? What's the agenda here?

1. Context is important. It's lacking with this and with the supposed "handshake" snub.
When you look more closely at either event, you see that they are non-events.

I'm starting to think that the MSM just uses one jackass move to cover for another.

2. Is Jake Tapper stupid or dishonest?

Via Atrios' link to "Sadly No."

What Bill Clinton actually said:

“Everybody knows that global warming is real...but we cannot solve it alone.”

“And maybe America, and Europe, and Japan, and Canada — the rich counties — would say, ‘OK, we just have to slow down our economy and cut back our greenhouse gas emissions ’cause we have to save the planet for our grandchildren.’ We could do that.

“But if we did that, you know as well as I do, China and India and Indonesia and Vietnam and Mexico and Brazil and the Ukraine, and all the other countries will never agree to stay poor to save the planet for our grandchildren. The only way we can do this is if we get back in the world’s fight against global warming and prove it is good economics that we will create more jobs to build a sustainable economy that saves the planet for our children and grandchildren. It is the only way it will work.

How ABC News' Jake Tapper portrayed the speech:

Former President Bill Clinton was in Denver, Colorado, stumping for his wife yesterday. In a long, and interesting speech, he characterized what the U.S. and other industrialized nations need to do to combat global warming this way: “We just have to slow down our economy..."

8. When Tapper was covering the 2000 race for Salon.com
I clearly remember him mocking Gore and joining the media pile-on. He was inserting this stuff into what was billed as objective reporting, not commentary. It was really egregious and unprofessional, IMO.

Now that he's famous, I consider anything he does to be highly suspect.

10. This is what they call in basketball, "a make up call".
First, the Obama "snub", and now this bullshit. I really hate the media.

3. The voters aren't buying it
They know the media are shilling for Obama. They may vote for Hillary out of spite.

This does not make me particularly happy. People should vote based on issues, not emotions. But Obama's campaign is heavily oriented toward emotional voting. This could hoist him on a perverse petard -- one not of his own.

16. It's not shilling for Obama. This is a disaster for our cause Global Climate Change.
This is feeding the Right's bogus talking points, when Bill Clinton never said what ABC said he said.

I am an Obama supporter. This is unbelievable shoddy journalism.

4. My God, that's terrible journalism
Usually, when things are taken out of context, they are close, but this is a case where ABC should really be pressured to issue a retraction and apology.

6. Get used to it. That's what the Media DOES all the time!
And you wonder why some candidates sound like everything they say is calculated? THAT'S WHY! When someone talks straight forward like WE WANT, a short clip of their statement is aired endlessly just to generate ratings!

...on the top of its page.

Hopefully, some people will come away realizing how disgraceful Jake Tapper is.

12. Jake Tapper himself provides the full quote, after leading with distortion.
Go down to the 11th paragraph of the Jake Tapper article, where Tapper finally shows what Bill Clinton actually said:

13. This is unbelievable!
Anyone with a third grade education could figure out what Clinton was doing. When he said that we could "slow down" the economy he was creating a STRAW MAN argument that he subsequently shot down IN THE VERY NEXT SENTENCE!

15. Yep. The Carpetbagger Report has it, too:
http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/14426.html

This is really, really bad, because it's NOT what Bill Clinton said, and the distortion of it plays right in the Right's hands (except some rw bloggers who took the time to check out the video and concede the obvious).

Please check out the Carpetbagger link.

Right Wing blogs including The Corner and Hot Air even concede ABC is dead wrong.

Time for a retraction ABC!!!!!!!!!!

22. Last attempt, but this outrage really deserves more attention
If the MSM is allowed to keep mistakes like this for more than 24 hours, then they can really screw with the election. I think this is very, very serious.

20.  ABC has been leading the lie about the Clintons contest
since early 1992. ABC is worse than Fox News when it comes to the Clintons. Nobody says anything about it either.

21. ABC also gave us "The Path to 9/11"
http://thinkprogress.org/2006/09/06/bush-official-blasts-abc/

"Top Bush Counterterrorism Official: ABC’s Path to 9/11 Is ‘Shameful,’ ‘Straight Out of Disney and Fantasyland’

Last night on MSNBC’s Scarborough Country, Roger Cressey — a top counterterrorism official to Bush II and Clinton — blasted ABC’s docudrama “The Path to 9/11.” Cressy said “it’s amazing…how much they’ve gotten wrong. They got the small stuff wrong” and “then they got the big stuff wrong.” He added that a scene where the Clinton administration passes on a surefire opportunity to take out bin Laden is “something straight out of Disney and fantasyland. It’s factually wrong. And that’s shameful.”

There was NO need for this comment of his, what with a predicted recession in the wings. It's not like he is regarded as an expert on GW.
