My toddler helped get Dept of Peace resolution passed at my TX precinct
Edited on Wed Mar-10-04 01:31 AM by lostnfound
I brought him to my first-ever precinct convention. He was so well-behaved; I was so happy that I was able to stay the full 90 minutes. The very last resolution offered was the Dept of Peace.

I stood up, and with toddler in front of me, and said, 'I am here tonight mainly because of this issue, and because of him. Because -- so help me God, if I open up one more newspaper and see ONE MORE child blown to BITS by our bombs -- bombs made in the US and dropped by the US -- and I haven't done everything I possibly can to stop it, I don't think I can live with myself anymore." I said that even though it may sound like a radical idea offered by DK, war seems to be an untouchable issue to our politicians, both Dems & Reps, and we have GOT to do something to stop these unnecessary wars; we need to send a strong message to our leaders that this issue is really, really important to US. I said so please, let's go out on a limb a little bit and at least give this a try.

My eyes were starting to tear up, at the time, but I was speaking from the heart and it all came out all right. One other person spoke up and said that the cabinet-level position would give it the serious attention it deserves. Then we voted and it passed. I felt really good about it and really grateful to the man who had introduced it, and also to my son who was so well-behaved that I was able to stay for the whole thing.

I know it's only a precinct. But I'm really happy about it anyway... :)

On edit: Also grateful for Dennis Kucinich for putting this issue (Peace is an option...) on the table. And GRATEFUL FOR DU! for informing me about the importance of precinct conventions!!

3. congratulations lostnfound
And congratulations to your son too. We passed the dept of peace resolution in my caucus tonight too. It was so exciting to participate in one more level. This is real democracy, meeting with your neighbors and getting to know more of them.

Such good news here in Austin. Llyod Doggett is back in Congress and Ron Wilson (hated DINO who sold us out on state re-districting is out of a job) Happy Happy Joy Joy.

Onward to victory in Nov.

Sonia

4. A great moment for you and for all of us. And it's not...
"...only a precinct." Every journey is a series of single steps.

5. OMFG
So many fellow Dems from Austin!

I don't feel left out now.

Now why did Travis Country go for Bush last time around?

Grrrr.

6. Actually
I'm pretty sure Travis County went for Gore. One blue in a sea of red. When I lived there, Lloyd Doggett was the congressman, after all.

Check out this cool website for more.

7. Wonderful
Thanks for posting. The Department of Peace is an important idea that deserves more attention than it's getting.
