McCain 'Would Entertain' Being Kerry's VP
WASHINGTON - Republican Sen. John McCain allowed a glimmer of hope Wednesday for Democrats fantasizing about a bipartisan dream team to defeat President Bush — a far-flung notion the senator's staff quickly squashed.

McCain said in a television interview that he would consider the unorthodox step of running for vice president on the Democratic ticket — in the unlikely event he received such an offer from the presidential candidate.

"John Kerry is a close friend of mine. We have been friends for years," McCain said Wednesday when pressed to squelch speculation about a Kerry-McCain ticket. "Obviously I would entertain it."

"It's impossible to imagine the Democratic Party seeking a pro-life, free-trading, non-protectionist, deficit hawk," the senator told ABC's "Good Morning America" during an interview about illegal steroid use. "They'd have to be taking some steroids, I think, in order to let that happen."

Unlike some other Republican senators, he hasn't railed against Kerry, a fellow Vietnam veteran. McCain called the Kerry-Bush contest "the nastiest campaign so far that we have seen" and said he preferred campaigning for candidates instead of against their opponents.

There's plenty of talent in the Democratic Party for the VP slot. There's no reason why we should have to "outsource" this job!

2. Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
....talk about balancing the ticket, it would a bi-partisan movement to dump Bush great had he got the GOP nomination in 2000 I’d have voted for McCain but the Republicans weren’t ready for that as it turned out….he’d win us Arizona and get us the moderate independents and some republicans in the Midwest so I recon we’d win MO and OH maybe even IN, I say WV too and of course Florida and New Hampshire man it would be a route… still doubt it would happen but I’ll keep on hoping…

Kerry/ McCain 04….nice…

4. I would never have voted McCain over Gore
...but if having McCain as VP gives us a better chance of ousting Bush, I say we need to take this option very seriously.

29. Never. He was in New Hampshire stumping for Bush and said Bush
deserves another four years. This from the man who dissed his wife and daughter. McCain has no ethics and no moral code. Fuck with politics, that's one thing. Help a man who hurt his wife and daughter means he's a suit without character. Besides, I've had it with Dems acting like repugs. I don't want one on the ticket.

3. Why would
Kerry even consider him? Despite an occasional slap to Bush, McCain is just another RW Republican. He always comes home to Bush to sing his praises whenever it's needed.

5. Not Since The Days Of Whigs!
McCain wouldn't be my first choice ideologically (obviously), but symbolically it is fantastic. I would love it if after 9/11, we could actually try to establish some American unity that wasn't utter BS. This makes me proud, even to contemplate.

6. Same here...
...while i get the sense that many people on the board are way to the left of McCain I'm much more of a moderate Dem so i can pro ably stomach the guy much more easliy...that having been said i still disagree with him on a number of issues but if he where Kerry's VP and its a long shot but good to see McCain playing it then hell we could have a landslide in our favour...wow! it is symbolic it would cause many to see Bush as a radical far removed from the center and Kerry and McCain as the voices of reason and Sane government... in any event i would have voted for McCain in 2000 had he been the GOP candidate so long as he'd campaigned as a true moderate and not compromised him self with a wacko VP, but then again there are two half of the Dem party one that if the Dem party disappeared they'd side with Nader and co and then the others who'd side with McCain and Snowe long before siding with Nader and co...and I'm afraid I'm the latter....:toast:

26. I don't know if I'm considered "far left" here, but I can say this...
...McCain is far right. He's a neoconservative, for crying out loud! It's amazing to me that we'd even entertain the possibility of inviting a neocon into a Democratic administration.

Hey, I want b*sh gone too, but this is insane!

11. The last time there was a mixed ticket
was 1864, and it didn't exactly bring about "unity". Neither did the mixed "ticket" of Adams-Jefferson in 1796.

Sorry, but having three out of the four major presidential candidates being republicans is a freakin' LOUSY idea

9. McCain has been campaigning for Bush
so wouldn't that be a tad awkward?

It'd be nice if he campaigned for Kerry or endorsed him, but I think that's as far as it should go. He'd be a heartbeat away from the presidency, and while he's a good guy, he's on the wrong side of a lot of issues. We would stand to lose everything.

General Clark is my choice. Well-spoken and intelligent without being condescending. Lots of crossover appeal. Contrast his calls for transparency in government with Cheney's secrecy. Contrast the Kerry/Clark military service record to the chickenhawks. No contest!

13. That so many Kerry supporters would even *THINK* about this
then go and wonder why there is so much discomfort about Kerry..

Stop and think just a minute.... Really, this is so incredible.

Do you really want the few Dems left who care about the Party to completely give up???

Amazing...

Kanary, giving up hope by the minute

All I've heard is a bunch of talking heads on the idiot box saying what a good thing this would be. I haven't heard any real Dem talking this up.

18. I think you are correct!
At first I was dumbfounded and didn't know what to make of his statement. But it can only mean one thing: despite putting in his time for Bush for the team, he is basically saying he really wants Kerry (wink, wink)! He knows the VP thing will never happen. Pretty slick!

:)

A few more threads like this and I'm going to quit this board.

McCain is a Republican for G-d's sake! He's for freetrade (although I wouldn't call this a traditionally Republican position), and he whored for the Iraq War like hell including going on some TV shows and making xenophobic anti-French jokes and remarks. As a French-American I would NEVER EVER vote for this man.

If McCain becomes the nominee I will not vote for Kerry. I would vote for Socialist Workers. End of story.

I spit on John McCain. Piece of filth belongs in a jail cell in the Hague with George Bush where he can enjoy being George Bush's punk all he wants.

19. What should he be in jail for?
I don't agree with a lot of McCain's policies, obviously as I am a Dem...but one needs to respect this man that spend countless years tortured as a prisoner of war. Hung up by his arms behind his back, his arms thereby dislocated the entire time he was hung for days at end. He has so much scar tissue in his shoulders that he can't raise his arms above 90 degrees.

Also this will not happen, the Kerry McCain thing will not happen...but McCain is a centrist repub and votes with the democrats in the senate a good amount of the time...

20. Wow.
McCain suffered as a POW. Great, so I guess we should forgive Hitler because he got beaten up by his father, or Mussolini because he served Italy valiantly in World War I.

McCain belongs in jail for war crimes against the Iraqi people at the very least.

21. So we are sending everyone that voted for the war to war crime tribunal?
We didn't need that senate anyways...

I hope you realize that two actitives are done by the victors, the writing of history books and the prosecution of war criminals. Plus I hardly see a way to hold the senate criminally accountable for this, nor do I find that very appealing... how about you hold them accountable with your vote, your donations and your time spend volunteering?

22. Yes.
"I hope you realize that two actitives are done by the victors"

So then I guess Bush is exempt from justice. Just because he isn't being prosecuted doesn't mean he shouldn't be.

"Plus I hardly see a way to hold the senate criminally accountable for this, nor do I find that very appealing... how about you hold them accountable with your vote, your donations and your time spend volunteering?"

Hitler didn't come up with the idea of gassing Jews. So I guess he wasn't accountable either since he was only indirectly involved.

23. I seem to recall your supporting
both Gephardt and Edwards at various times. They both voted for and supported the war. Do you think that they should be serving time in the Hague for war crimes, or that they are comparable to Hitler?

I am totally opposed to a Kerry/McCain ticket, and oppose McCain's politics, but I think your statements about him are a bit over the top.
