Kerry quotes Bible, irks Bush camp
Kerry quotes Bible, irks Bush camp
Associated Press
Monday, March 29, 2004

----
ST. LOUIS -- Sen. John Kerry cited a Bible verse Sunday to criticize leaders who have "faith but has no deeds," prompting President George W. Bush's spokesman to accuse Kerry of exploiting scripture for political gain.
(...)
Kerry cited scripture in his appeal to the worshipers, including James, 2:14: "What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds?"
"The scriptures say, what does it profit, my brother, if someone says he has faith but does not have works?" Kerry said. "When we look at what is happening in America today, where are the works of compassion?"
Bush campaign spokesman Steve Schmidt said Kerry's comment "was beyond the bounds of acceptable discourse and a sad exploitation of scripture for a political attack."
Kerry told the largely black congregation that the country has served privileged people while ignoring Americans who live in neighborhoods like theirs.

1. How dare Kerry?!
Doesn't he know that the bible belongs to the Republican party (just like the flag)?

2. This is great!
It shows that Kerry is going to take the fight to bush in areas that the republicans clearly do not expect it. For far too long, they have hoodwinked the public into thinking that the republicans have a monopoly on military & religious issues. Buckle your seatbelt, president bush, because you are going on a fast, bumpy ride.

19. Not only does God want him to be (p)resident..
God "told" him to go to Afghanistan, and then God "told" him to invade Iraq.

You see, everybody knows only those to whom God speaks directly can use God's words for political gain. And God is too busy right now directing operations in Iraq to speak directly to anyone but God's own chosen Dumbya, so that Godless liberal Kerry should just bow down before the Lord W and accept his saviorness!

Got it now? ...Sheeesh!

6. You Got to hand it to Kerry!
Bush never thought he'd use the Bible against them. For far too long, they thought that book was the private domain of the Republican Party. Every time Kerry hits at Bush, I have another reason why I like him!
Another side note...My 18 year old daughter just registered to vote. She said she's voting for John Kerry because she doesn't trust Bush...smart girl!!!

12. Good for your daughter! Yesterday I gave JK buttons to 3 young people
who work at one of our local theatres, who inquired about the one I was wearing. I told them it was great to see young people engaged and reminded them to vote in November.

The young people do appear to get it--which is a wonderful omen for the election in November and our country's future.

7. That takes a lot of nerve for Kerry to say something like that!
How DARE he quote from the Bible! Doesn't he know by now that liberals are all sinners and have NO RIGHT to the Bible or the American flag? And the fact that he has the audacity to even touch on the subject of the republican's Bible and their Jesus! And Kerry should leave not only the Bible quotes to republicans to talk about, but for goodness sake,LEAVE THEIR FLAG ALONE TOO!!! (heavy sarcasm on)

9. lol morans
Kerry should put out a press release with either Bush using the Bible about 100 times or blasting the Bushies for being anti-religion.

17. Catholic
Wow, that is really going to piss off the fundies, as that is one of the main tenets of Catholicism. And Catholics are almost as bad as Jews and Northerners in their opinion.

20. Good. Turn the faith issue around to attack them.
They have exploited it shamefully for decades and haven't done anything that the NT preaches.
