My dad in Texas put out a Kerry yard sign yesterday!
He has several yard signs, in fact, and told me that he had just put two Kerry bumperstickers on his big black pickup truck. I said, Dad, aren't you afraid your truck will get keyed, or your house will be vandalized? He's in a flaming hotbed of Bushites down there south of Ft. Worth, right on the Johnson County line (Johnson County, whose founder swore that no college would ever be built in HIS by-God county). And Dad said, "Those people are passionate about their candidate, and I'm going to be EQUALLY passionate about mine!" Then he added humorously (um, I think), that he has "a guard dog named Smith and Wesson." He's really fired up over this. This is a big deal, because in the 43 years I've known him, my dad has never put out political stuff for anyone. I'm proud that he is able to do this in one of the reddest areas of Texas! It is so hard to be a Dem in a red state, you can't imagine how hard it is unless you've done it, or you are doing it.

1. good for him..but isn't it sad we feel the need to be frightened of
retaliation from the other side..which is all too real !

2. I'm from a red state too!
I find joy in knowing that my Kerry bumpersticker pisses off all of the Pukes here in Eastern TN.

They can do what they please to my car... that's why I carry insurance!

I'm waiting on my shipment of anti-Chimpy stickers to arrive... they're really going to piss of the rednecks around here!

3. One of the few lifelong Repubs I know is in E. Tenn.
and he's passionate about his first Dem vote this November for Kerry! It's pretty exciting to see a Repub waking up after a lifetime of Repub voting. (However, in my friend's defense, I have to admit that the Repub party itself has changed quite a bit over the years!)

4. We're right down here with him in Johnson County. We're working
to get Chet Edwards elected as our representative -- due to DeLay's redistricting. It feels kind hopeless down here, but we have our meetings and are doing grassroots work. There is a great group in Tarrant County where patsified's dad is, and they deserve all the support they can get. Hang in!

6. Keep it up
My dad is retired, he's just an ole farmer these days (my folks live in Burleson, but the farm is outside of Itasca), and he is a man who was never much interested in this stuff before. My Repub brother is the principal of a high school in a snot-nosed North Dallas suburb, and even HE is voting for Kerry this time! Miracles are happening all over Texas, so hang in there! Y'all ARE making a difference!

5. You SHOULD be proud!
My Dad's in Texas too, near Waxahachie. Now I know who to send my extra Kerry yard sign too. :) He's just as angry as your dad seems to be (our anger has brought us even closer together over the past few years).

7. Same here, LOL!
"The anger that binds!" Seriously, my dad and I really do have a great time venting about politics during our phone calls, because we're married to spouses who are much more low-key type of Dems! I bet if your dad got together with my dad, they'd sure have a time.

8. Wow... are we twins?

That's so funny. My partner is also a dem who "low-key" describes quite well. She cares about what I talk about and agrees with me, but sometimes I see her eyes glaze over the minute I say, "So today, you wouldn't believe what that idiot did!"

I'm sure you're right, that our dads would get along famously. (We have never spent so much time on the phone in all my 41 years as we have these past few.)

On edit... Love your avatar! What a lady. :)

9. It's hard sharing a home w/a low-key Dem!
My husband agrees with me on most stuff, but I really have to be calm when I talk politics with him, I can't let go with a good hyperbole-filled rant, know what I mean? LOL I have to say, though, that lately he's been going off on a few rants of his own about Iraq, so there's always hope! I usually refer to him as the "Tom Daschle Dem." Don't make waves, no name-calling, just let Bush hang himself, etc.:eyes:

But I do know that glazed look your partner gets, I'm very familiar with it. So I have to call up my dad for political release, in fact, my dad gets even more insane than I do, which is refreshing!

Waxahachie, man, that'd be a tough-as-hell place to live these days for a Dem, no question about it. Whew.

You've totally described my husband! I have been informed that on election night he intends to take the kids to a hotel with a pool, even though it's a school night, because if shrub steals the election again I'll be screaming and ranting all night long.

He's right.

16. Can your husband make some room...
at the hotel for my husband and my 4-year-old? LOL I think there's no place he'd rather be on election night! Great idea.

Could be worse, I could be married to a Republican or something... ack! I wonder what people in "mixed relationships" do?

12. Here, Here
Bushes are NO TEXANS!!!!!! Their from NEW ENGLAND, "born, raised,
educated, religion (definitly NOT RWCHRISTIAN) just the opposite,
and had it not been for the Dorothy Walker family they would have
been nothings.....Babs, great and/or grandfather President Pierce
was an alcoholic, you see this family has shall we say, revised
they background/heritage to suit wherever they happen to land. When
they were living in China, son georgie lived with them for two
months as he did when they lived in the Waldorf Astoria when pappy
was in the UN, there to georgie lived and played. Their a joke we
know them and what and who they are! Glad to be rid of them, Hell
Maine doesn't want them either.

15. Welcome to DU! I actually conversed with Georgies cousin on another
discussion board - non political in nature, but suffice it to say she can't stand the guy.

She was cautious in her statements, but I got her drift.

She was fully *ABB by the way. :hi:

*ABB = Anybody But Bush.

AGAIN WELCOME!!!

18. Welcome to DU! Yes, isn't it interesting about the "Texas Bushes"
how only ONE of them has a Texas-fangled accent? Gee, I wonder why? Jeb has very little accent of any kind, same with Doro, and Herbert-Herbert and the She-Wolf both sound like Yankees to my ears. Gosh darn, I can't figure it out?

13. Tell him to bring it in!!!
Tell him to wait until later in the year before putting it out or he runs the risk of Bush supporters (and there are a heap down there) of stealing or vandalizing it. It's happening up here in WI already. We figure put it out from Sept. to Nov. 2nd, and bring the sign in for Halloween so that Repubs don't greenlight it's destruction. :)

If you have a balcony, do what I am doing this summer. Hang Kerry signs over it. I for one am not going to let them steal my sign because they act like children.

14. I've already had my Kerry yardsign taken down twice
In the month I've had it. At least they leave it down on the lawn... must be civilized children. We'll see how THAT escalates.
