Her husband, Sen. John Kerry, is the presumed Democratic presidential candidate, but Heinz Kerry was a registered Republican until just last year.

Beyond Heinz Kerry's substantial wealth — she's said to have a personal fortune of $500 million — her most notable trait as a political wife may be that she says exactly what she's thinking. "I'm a real person. I may not be what everybody would like to see, but it's real," she tells ABCNEWS' Barbara Walters in an exclusive interview airing on 20/20 Friday at 10 p.m.

Widow of H. John Heinz III, she is no stranger to the political spotlight and the scrutiny that comes with it. Her first husband, H. John Heinz III, sole heir to the Heinz ketchup and food fortune, served nearly 20 years in Congress — as a Republican congressman and senator from Pennsylvania — before his death in a 1991 plane crash.

There are many people who are concerned with Kerry's ties to big money- both his personal ones as a Forbes Kerry & his wife's as a Heinz. Her first husband, Republican Senator John Heinz, seems more like a Democrat than a lot of Democrats do today.

It saddens me that I'm fonder of John Heinz, bio here, a Republican, & Teresa than I am of Kerry. I don't think it matters anymore whether you're a Republican or a Democrat. What really matters now is whether you're a Neo. Neo-liberal Democrats and neo-conservative Republicans pushing for the "New World" are the real problem IMO.

It's extremely ironic that just two weeks before he died, Senator John Heinz specifially critized Kerry over Gulf War One.

Here's an excerpt from a piece in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on February 29, 2004 by Dennis Roddey:

A few days later, Kerry wrote back to thank Carter for opposing military action against Iraq and told him he had voted "no" on the resolution to give then-President George H.W. Bush the go-ahead.

A few days later, Carter got another letter from Kerry. The Senator thanked Carter for supporting Bush on Iraq.

"From the outset of the invasion, I have strongly and unequivocally supported President Bush's response to the crisis and the policy goals he has established with our military deployment in the Persian Gulf," Kerry wrote.

At the time the first George Bush was still flush with victory in the Persian Gulf, and dinnergoers chortled over a videotaped presentation of assorted senate Democrats backpedaling in the wake of a war they'd opposed. Ted Kennedy was shown. News clips were shown. But for Kerry, the speaker simply read the two letters, to everyone's amazement.

"It's like those before-and-after pictures they print in the papers," the speaker said. "If they didn't tell you so themselves, you'd think they were different people."

Kerry has to remember that one. The speaker was Sen. John Heinz. Two weeks later, he would die in a plane crash. Four years after that, Kerry would marry his widow -- a woman who speaks directly and without equivocation and doesn't need two sets of letters to make her mind known.

I'm glad to be here and really enjoy the conversations. I can't believe Kerry wrote those letters. That is crazy, but it looks like he is the only choice to get out what I view as a neo-conservative.

as the next President but I believe John Kerry can do a good job and make a fine president. I'm tired of the divisiveness and the US vs. THEM in this country. It's fine to disagree about points of view but thanks to Rush and infotainment media we no longer see each other as human.

I keep waiting for the day some freeper blows a circuit and shows up at a peace rally with a semi-automatic because Hannity or one of the other nut-jobs has sent them over the edge talking about liberals being terrorists who hate America.

I won't hate anyone just because they have an R by their name. It's childish, shortsighted and petty. I'll leave that kind of behavior to the likes of Ann Coulter.

I was a republican until about 6 years ago. Howard Dean was once a republican, same with Hillary Clinton, Clark, etc.

had a large article about her in it a few weeks ago. It was pretty good and I learned much more about Teresa Heinz Kerry, and frankly, I liked most of what I read.

It would seem to me that there are a lot of Republicans who could be asking themselves, "Is this the Republican party that I joined?". It is not the party of their "greatest" presidents. It is not the party of Lincoln, T. Roosevelt, Eisenhower, or even Goldwater and Nixon.

She must have this thrill thing with the S & B types.

She has a strong dislike for Senator Santorum. In 2000, I believe she endorsed Ron Klink over Santorum. She also endorsed Ed Rendell for Governor when she was (nominally) still a Republican. The Republican Party in Pennsylvania wanted her out, and they were practically doing backflips when she switched. She did support some Republican candidates for office in and around Pittsburgh, but they were all moderate, Arlen Specter types.

John Heinz was a moderate, very good Senator from Pennsylvania. He was the kind of Republican that could work across the aisle, and he always had the best interest of the country in mind. It is truly a tragedy that he passed away in a plane crash. He would've been a wonderful president (and he, not W., probably would've won in 2000).

The fact that Theresa Heinz, and her son Chris are Dmocrats is more a reflection on the fact that the Republican moderate is becoming extinct. They're both strongly for John Kerry. They're both immensly talented. And all of us Democrats are fortunate to have them as members of our party.

Or so the Freepers will say.

But I am damn good Democrat now. I regsistered democrat the day Gore conceded to bush. But I hadn't voted for a Republican for over ten years prior to that. It doesn't matter how you are registered, just what you believe and how you vote.
