Would it be bad form for Kerry to pick VP before convention?
Technically, he isn't the official nominee just yet. The convention in July will make that definite.

Is he waiting perhaps because he doesn't want to alter the standard process?

1. I think that when US democracy is at stake
and our global reputation in tatters, the Dem Convention is a great time to kickoff "acting" like the President, not acting like the Dem nominee.

Pick the VP before the convention - but not too soon - I like the beginning of June.

2. My thinking is...
...that if he tries to get tons of presence and acknowledgment before the convention, the convention itself and all the coverage dedicated to it will be sort of anti-climatic.

I'm kind of glad that he's playing it cool right now and staying out of the spotlight. I think it's a good strategy to let Bush hang himself for now and come out swinging in a month or two.

3. Well, now that you say that...
...I am somewhat inclined to prefer this dripping process of letting 5 names out there for the tabloid media to feed on.

But if the situation in Iraq continues to go straight into Dante's previously undiscovered 8th Circle of Hell, then Kerry should really consider picking a Veep.

4. Not if the timing is right...

Candidates traditionally pick their running mate before the convention, but usually just a week or so before.

Kerry will likely make his announcement a bit earlier than usual.

5. As long as it's not Lieberman
That would really seal his coffin with many democratic and pogressive voters, but should get a bunch of neo-cons leaving the Bush camp. Please. please, don't pick Lieberman or anyone else with Israel First policy.

7. Considering the fact that Lieberman had squat support in the primaries-
and that the reasons for this are surely linked to his rotten showing as VP-to-be in 2000, I don't think we have anything to worry about in 2004.

6. It might not work.
It has never been done successfully before. Remember a guy named Eagleton? Lets not give the BFEE more time to dig up dirt on our next VP. Keep 'em guessing.

8. Eagleton...
...was picked the day after McGovern got the nomination.

Successful early picks include Clinton/Gore in '92, Gore/Lieberman in '00, and smirk/sneer in '00. G/l because they won & s/s because they got the jobs.

By the way, McGovern had NOOOO CHANCE in '72. The greatest VP pick in history wouldn't have made a particle of difference in that election. It only would have been marginally closer with him losing only 45-47 states instead of 49.

12. I'm old too, but that is not enough.
King Lear's jester said something like "Thou should not have grown old before thou hadst grown wise". I've got some growing to do.

11. On April 4, Kerry said he wanted a VP candidate "within eight weeks"...
Which is certainly well before the convention.

13. We need all the help
we can get NOW to fight the corporate/theocrat slime campaigns. No one but us junkies pay any attention to the conventions anyway. Pick one NOW!
