Have we lost the Jewish vote?
Edited on Sat May-22-04 01:32 PM by Skinner
I know AIPAC is one of the most powerful lobbies in the U.S. and so I take seriously when they chant "4 more years" and the rest of this.
I can't help but feeling betrayed, because the Smirking Chimp does more for Israel they abandon the party? They applaud TOM DELAY I mean BARF BAG!!!

Bush: ‘Natural’ Alliance Of U.S. And Israel Unbreakable
May 19, 2004

WASHINGTON – To thunderous applause, chants of “four more years,” and at least two dozen standing ovations, President Bush on Tuesday addressed the closing session of the annual policy conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

The crowd of about 5,000 – which included hundreds of students – was in a distinctly pro-Bush frame of mind even before the president made his appearance at the Washington Convention Center.

The very mention of Bush’s name or the sight of his image on video screens was enough to prompt sustained cheers. When Rep. Tom DeLay, the Republican leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, called Bush “the greatest friend of Israel the world has ever had,” he got a standing ovation.

--snip--
Bush’s unprecedented support for Israeli claims on the West Bank and his rejection of any “right of return” to Israel for Palestinian refugees has endeared him to many AIPAC members.

1. Probably has lost SOME of the vote, but certainly not all.
To many Jews, support of Israel is extremely important and trumps all other issues. Many have family members living over there, and that can also play into the decision-making process.

5. Support of Israel, or support of Sharon ?
It is like saying support of the US is support of Bush.

I support the state of Israel, but I think Ariel Sharon is on his way to annihilate its soul, and probably its existence eventually as it becomes the most hated nation in the ME.

I support the United States, but I think George W. Bush is on his way to annihilate their soul, and probably their very existence eventually...etc.

How can people think that Israel's current policies are good for Israel? How can they think that the US's current policies are good for the US ?

3. "My country, right or wrong"
takes on a whole new meaning when "my country" means not the U.S. but Israel, or for that matter, any foreign country.

21. What I don't get is...
Edited on Sat May-22-04 02:28 AM by MessiahRp
is why do so many Jews here base their vote on Israel so strongly? Most immigrants aren't using their homeland's Presidential election to push an agenda for their original country. I mean my family has pretty solid Italian roots and you don't see me basing my vote on Italian issues.

I don't get it at all. If you love Israel so much and care more about it than the destruction of the country you live in, why aren't you living there?

That's a fair enough question to me.

7. Today on another thread I posted an LA TIMES quote . . .
Edited on Fri May-21-04 04:18 PM by Tina H
saying that in 2000 Bush got 17% of the Jewish vote, but this time they are hoping for 30%.

It was unclear where the 30% number came from.

Anybody have current poll numbers on how the Jewish vote splits now?

8. Jewish voters are not one big monolith
Those who support Sharon & Likud will vote for Bush. And those who put Israel s interests ABOVE U.S. interests will vote for Bush.

But those who are unhappy with the situation here at home, & are against the growing violence in the Mideast will vote for Kerry.

11. Jewish Vote is not lost
Some Jews will vote for Bush but most will vote for Senator Kerry. Bush may get more of the Jewish vote in 2004 than he did in 2000 but that is not going to be a meaningful number.

12. Not the Jewish vote, maybe some of the Israeli vote
For people that put Israel above America, maybe some of those votes will go to Bush that didn't in 2000.

However, it would be an insult to suggest that most Jewish Americans care more about Israel than the United States.

Most Jewish Americans, like any other group of intelligent Americans, can see that Bush's policies are bad for America and bad for the world.

14. No
Polls have shown that jews are overwhelmingly for Kerry. Also, somewhere around two-thirds of jews were against the war in Iraq from the start.

and as long as the GOP is the party of right-wing religious fundamentalism and intolerance, we won't lose it.

Despite its propaganda to the contrary, AIPAC does NOT represent US Jewry.

we may have lost the Likudnik vote, but most Jews are still liberal on most issues -- and Bush's psycho religosity scares many of them.

20. Fuck them and their votes.

If they only care about our support for Israel and not about how things are going in America, then I hope that they move there. Our "right or wrong" support for Israel and Sharon's abominable policies has cost us dearly. Besides, there are many MANY jewish people who do not support Zionism or Sharon.
