Mike Miles Wins 51% CO State Convention Today
the place erupted when it was announced that Miles got the most votes. The Colorado Dems just brushed Miles off and annointed Ken Salazar.

What a great day in CO

2. It Was Expected Salazar Would Win...
Because the big boys in da party picked him and expected all other candidates to bow out.

Salazar supported Iraq war and endorsed Lieberman. Basically he's Nighthorse-Campbell lite

3. Just wait until the primary.
We will LOOSE, repeat LOOSE, the election if Miles is the Democrat candidate.

5. Why do you believe that?
And if Salazar is unable to beat Miles in the primary, than why do you think he would have been able to beat the Republican in the general election?

I'm just curious about your reasoning on this, as I don't agree with it at all.

14. Because for the millionth time primary winnability is not parallel to gen
election electability in any major way.

To win a state like Colorado in a presidential election year a democrat has to be able to run as a moderate to beat a strong GOP candidate like Coors, because I garentee you he will be the GOP nominee.

16. Sorry, BUT I tired of hearing this!
MM won yesterday BECAUSE he inspires people! People recognize when it is truth not political rhetoric. I support MM, I was his delegate, I will work for him...and get him elected. I am so tired of hearing WE have to be like THEm in order to win....It is absolutey Bushit...and we proved it yesterday! What a victory!

It proved that the liberal/grassroots voice is alive and well and living in CO ....a conservative state! We COULD have done the same thing with Kucinich if given the time...and the DLC didn't get involved where they are not wanted.

17. I agree with you on that

Trying to be more like THEM is not a winning strategy for Democrats, just as it isn't for Republicans.

People who don't know him, seem to have this stereotype of MM that he's some kind of crazy, frothing at the mouth leftie, and that that's why people are supporting him.

It is true that he is openly and unappolegetically progressive, but that is far from his only significant attribute, and IMHO not the reason he is drawing the kind of support he is. I believe that people tend to vote for those whom they can respect, who know who they are and what they stand for, and aren't afraid to stand up strongly for their beliefs. People don't like to vote for wishy washy candidates who seem to be afraid to stand for anything.

I believe that he can and will attract votes from accross the political spectrum. I actually met a McCain supporter at the Convention in a Miles T-shirt. First of all, he has outstanding qualifications, especially for this particular period in our nations history. He is a West Point graduate and a former Army Ranger who specialized in counterterrorism. He also has extensive experience working in the State Department as an intelligence analyst and as a diplomat in post-Communist Russia and Poland.

The kind of person he is, and his carreer experiences will, I believe make him attractive even to more conservative voters who will respect him, even if they don't agree with all his positions.

I believe that the Dems are making a huge mistake by believing that they have to run to the "center", which keeps getting pushed farther and farther to the right by the Republicans.

When the Republicans were out of power, they did not regain it by running to the left and trying to be more like Democrats. I believe that many people vote for Republican even though they don't agree with them on the issues, because they at least appear to be strong in their convictions. We have to present candidates that are strong in their convictions to go against Republicans, otherwise we will continue to lose.

Especially after watching the two of them yesterday, I believe that Mike Miles will be a much stronger candidate against whatever Republican gets thrown out there,(either Coors or Shaeffer).

Where are you in Colorado serrjw? I am also planning on getting much more involved in the Miles campaign.

15. You have loosed your biting (and crude) wit upon me. I am vanquished.
I rely heavily on spell checkers since I studied far more Science & Math than English in school. I doubted that spelling and knew it could be the other word. But even still, I was too lazy to use a dictionary.

Hey, here is a story in The Denver Post about what Miles victory really means:

"Activists in both political parties are ... further away from the center than the party rank and file," said Bob Loevy of Colorado College.

"So I'm not really all that surprised that a candidate like Mike, who clearly walked along the far left-side of the street as he could get, won," Loevy said, noting Miles' "Howard Dean- type" opposition to the war and his resistance to school vouchers.

20. Then the party faves need to stop being
GOP-lite. Seems simple. You can't run in the general if you don't win the primary.

4. Who is Miles?
As a Californian, I've heard of Ken Salazar, but not Mike Miles. Give me a quick overview of the guy, please.

9. He has never held public office.
Whereas Ken Salazar is the only Democrat that currently holds a state-wide office (AG).

18. On the other hand
Edited on Mon May-24-04 03:06 AM by crunchyfrog
Salazar has never worked in DC, whereas Miles worked in the State Department for six years.

You definitely could argue that Miles is far more equipped to deal with Washington politics than Salazar is, as well as the important foreign policy issues that are dominating Washington politics right now.

It was an absolutely amazing day. Pure electricity. Incredible for someone who has been marginalized to the point of being considered almost non-existant.

Now, Miles is going to be the first name on the ballot.:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

He seems like a good guy to me. (UC grad, and a Ranger! Hooah!)
Even if he doesn't win this primary, I hope to see him run for something again.

19. Actually, as someone on a Miles messageboard
has pointed out, if you do the math, Miles in fact won by slightly over 52% to Salazars slightly under 48%.
