What do we do if * wins re-election?
Unfortunately, it is possible. I'm wondering what we should do?

1) Revolt?

2) Leave the country?

3) Give in to reality, tune out politics, and hope America survives until we can get Hillary elected in 2008?

4) Stay angry and mad for another four years?

The last course would seem to the default position for people like us. But I'm thinking, four years of anger and high blood pressure sure will take a toll on our health. Is it worth it?

I've been thinking about this lately, and I'm really eager to hear what my comrades have to say. I'm sorry if this issue has already been covered here and I missed it. I do think it is an issue that we ought to give a little thought.

I think it was St. Francis of Assisi (sp?) who said, "God grant me the courage to fix the things I can fix, the patience to accept the things I cannot fix, and the wisdom to know the difference."

(Well he didn't say it quite like that, but you know what I mean.)

Is this the course we will have to take? Or are there other ways to resist?

Hope to start a good discussion here.

I think the election (even a Kerry landslide) will wind up in the US Supreme Court. Their re-selection of the war-chimp will send people into the streets in a mass revolt.

7. Civil War.
This country has not been divided like it presently is since the years leading up to and including the Civil War.

If Bushhole gets four more years, and the citizens of this great country does not come to their senses, America, as we know it will be lost.

9. What does "lost" mean?
Seriously, how bad do you think it will get? I mean, despite the hyperbole here sometimes, I can't see * appointing himself dictator. I think our country and Constitution are stronger than that.

Similarly, I think there's no way even * could ban abortion. I think it's been around long enough that it's for keeps in America.

That's not to say he couldn't cause a hell of a lot of other harm, though.

What specifically do you think will happen? Seriously, without the hyperbole.

But, I know that millions, including myself are completely disgusted by this neocon nation that we are allowing ourselves to become. I for one will not tolerate another stolen election.

I mean what I say about the loss of this nation as we know it. while the changes may seem subtle, they are nonetheless there.

Where has America's grace gone? We used to be the beacon of the free world.

25. You REALLY don't want to know...BUT HERE goes!
1) We lose SCOTUS! This is the worst part of it.....will effect America for the next 40 years.
2) MORE RW appointments to appellate court
3) Roe is gone.......BELIEVE IT....especially if they maintain Congress
4) More tax cuts for the wealthy
5)ANY environmental protection is gone
6) OVERturn ANY Gay rights
7) Passage of the Constitutional amendment defining marriage b/t a man and a woman....They could ram this thru the states in 3 years
8) SS & Medicare is privatized
9) Less money for public schools, more religious-based schooling federally funded and vouchers
10) MORE outsourcing of jobs......MORE imigration from Mexico

AND The democratic Party will be marginalized for years to come. IF you think we will have a BETTER chance in 2008; you are not paying attention.

This is without spending much time on it! If you didn't like the Iraqi war...just wait..We will have a war economy for the rest of my life.
I agree with the first post..i will work to make as much money as possible and leave the country.....in 4 more years you will not recognize America.....DO YOU NOW???!

11. Disappearance of a viable middle class

12. Passage of an amendment allowing Congress to overturn decisions made by the Supreme Court (this one has actually been proposed).

13. Drastic reductions in Medicaid, education (less college graduates), workers compensation.

14. Relaxation of worker safety regulations, for those who still have jobs.

15. An American Ruling Class--an investor class, where the people who pay taxes are the workers and the investors pay little or none.

4. Actually, it was Reinhold Niebuhr
Edited on Sun May-23-04 12:43 AM by WyoMee
The prayer you quoted, "God grant me the courage to fix the things I can fix, the patience to accept the things I cannot fix, and the wisdom to know the difference," is part of a longer prayer commonly attributed to theologian Reinhold Niebuhr. The opening has been adapted and used for many years by Alcoholic Anonymous as a part of their 12-step program for overcoming addiction.

The full text of the prayer is:

God, give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, courage to change the things which should be changed, and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other. Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardship as a pathway to peace, taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it, trusting that You will make all things right, if I surrender to Your will, so that I may be reasonably happy in this life, and supremely happy with You forever in the next.

Amen.

Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971)

5. Option #5
Edited on Sun May-23-04 12:50 AM by WyoMee
Stay patriotic for four more years by

  • Frequently and assertively writing, calling, faxing, lobbying our congressional representatives.
  • Writing letters to the editor ALL the time.
  • Speaking out when and where we can.
  • Working hard to secure a Democratic majority in the midterm elections.
  • Praying for wisdom and guidance in whatever way you commune with that which is greater than yourself.
  • Working in grass-roots efforts to effect change at local levels.

These won't guarantee that we won't get angry, but they will turn anger into potentially constructive action.

If they are able to steal another election, I'm not going to sit down and take it for another four years. That would be it.

A new supreme court judge will give the conservatives an inroads to again ban abortion. Not to mention gay marriages, prayer in school, unscientific support of a complete ban on contraceptive teaching in schools, re-subjugation of women and minorities, a reversal of Lawrence V. Texas, privatization of social security and Medicare, reinitialization of the draft, PATRIOT ACT II, III, IV,..., further shredding of the constitution, and an overall rollback of the civil rights every American takes for granted.

In a very real sense our government as we know it will cease to exist. The constitution and the ideals that are espoused by the bill of rights will again mean nothing. Our guarantee of accurate election results will mean nothing. Our people will vote and have their say, but that will mean nothing. The reigns of power may seem to change hands, but that change will disguise something more sinister in the upper echelons of this very government.

That I feel we cannot allow to happen. So, I'm taking to the streets in protest and calling for an all out civil war. We can't let that bastard steam roll us again. If we do, with the BBV controversy, I can guarantee you that the Dems. will never again control any branch of government in the United States.

15. I think we're all toughening up and sharpening up for that
hideous possibility. We'd work and push harder than ever.

If government were still so shameful and unaccountable, I honestly think that violent rioting would become common throughout the country. I would not participate myself, mind you, I just think that when government and other institutions become unreachable by more reasonable means, violence often ensues.

But we're going to win in the fall.

19. If * wins re-election
Either of two scenarios are likely to happen -

1) The Republicans rule America in the style of Pinochet's Chile (a gradual transformation to a banana republic). Ballot boxes and electoral registers are tampered with on a massive scale to secure a Republican WH, House and Senate every time. As a result, the US is isolated and it's power wanes in favour of the EU and China.

2) * can't resist a few more wars abroad, that ultimately lead to destruction of the US Republic as we know it; and the ascendency of China as world superpower.

If 2004 doesn't goes our way - see you in Canada.

If we lose, we'll have the satisfaction of having fought on principles, and there's always Canada. :) (Or Valhalla!)

If we win, we'll be planting the seeds of a new generation of American democracy, and we can write our own tickets for the future.

21. I am pretty much with The Shadow and WyoMee on this.
However, in my opinion, this doesn't have as much to do with the right, center and left, as it does with the Corporatists. The Corporatists are just using George W. Bush and the Religious right because it helps to advance their goals. They are practical people, not politcal idealogues, and the ends definitely justify the means.
It is no longer the Company Store, nor is it the Company Town; it is the Company Country.

34. Actually at this point, a democratic president would be better...
Edited on Sun May-23-04 09:57 PM by Hippo_Tron
Assuming he can get re-elected. The president has control over so many little things in the executive branch, not to mention that he controls basically everything with regards to foreign policy, that we need * out of office to clean up the mess he has made. A democratic congress and four more years of * can't really begin fixing the damage that has been done, only put a halt to it. We really need a new man at the center of our government to clean up the mess. Also remember, that if Bush gets re-elected but with a dem congress, he can veto whatever he wants and not have to worry about re-election. Although we need both the white house and congress to get any of our big items passed, a democratic president would be preferable to a democratic congress because four more yeras of shrub can still do damage, wtih or without congress.

Oh and on a totally side note, there's the judicial nominees. Even with a Republican senate, we'd still be better off with Kerry picking the nominees than Bush.

31. Where will the anger go?
My sense is that more and more people are becoming angrier and angrier as the scales fall from their eyes and they become aware of how duped they have been.

If this is the case and Bush is elected/selected or however stays in office, the anger will not just evaporate. It has to go somewhere and hopefully it can be channelled into a positive direction to take back the soul of the nation. I really do worry about this, though. I am afraid it will be uglier than we can imagine. Hopefully, Kerry will win and things will gradually cool off and the US will return to civility among those who disagree.
