How Bayh could help a Kerry ticket [Journal Gazette]
How Bayh could help a Kerry ticket 23 May 2004 Fort Wayne Journal Gazette

There are 16 million reasons and three or four cities that might make Evan Bayh look like a tempting morsel to John Kerry when it gets time to choose a running mate.

They all have to do with Bayh's Senate re-election campaign and absolutely nothing with the suggestion that Bayh could deliver Indiana into the Democratic column.

Bayh could buy millions of dollars of TV ads purportedly advancing his Senate campaign in Detroit, Cincinnati, Toledo and even Chicago and Louisville. This would be tricky on several fronts. But he could say he was just trying to reach the Hoosier voters who see those channels. It might not pass the laugh test, but there is nothing illegal about the idea. Some Republican would no doubt file a complaint with the Federal Election Commission, but the agency has never handled a presidential campaign complaint while the campaign is in process.

Kerry donors could give $2,000 apiece to Bayh's Senate race; Kerry-supporting political action committees could give Bayh's Senate operation $5,000. With everybody wink-winking and nod-nodding, Bayh could easily amass $10 million more to add to the $6 million he's got in the bank. What a great budget for those "Senate" commercials in Indiana's neighboring states.

#########

That is one take. Although unlikely.

1. Kerry is far better than expected on fundraising so he doesn't need Bayh
or anyone else for that type of help.

3. How could Bayh help a Kerry ticket?
By jumping off Niagra Falls in a barrel. And taking Lieberman & Biden with him.

4. I like Bayh, but the bumpersticker would be confusing...

It's all about marketing.

Kerry/Bayh 2004

I'm sorry, but does anyone think that would look right?

7. Notify the Kerry campaign about that problem LOL
Wouldn't be a good idea for Bayh to be second string.

5. Bayh is easily one of the biggest ZEROs amongst Democrats
I am so underwhelmed with him everytime I hear him speak or engage in debate. Please, let's stop throwinsg that frat boy's name around...this party can do WAY better than that.

6. Bayh would drive away Democratic minority voters in droves...

He continues to unnerve minority voters who have concluded...with considerable justification... that he is a Social Darwinian who wants to make America safe and comfortable...for White Men.

9. I think that whole ad thing is risky.
Yeah, the Republicans are playing dirty, there's no telling what goes on behind the scenes. That said, I'm not comfortable with the Kerry campaign using the Bayh campaign as a direct shelter of sorts for raising campaign cash. It's unethical, it violates the spirit of campaign finance reform, and it would generate bad press. Couple this with the idea of delaying the nomination, and there are serious image problems.

11. this hoosier doesn't bayh it
sorry for the bad pun but i don't see bayh helping Kerry much. The Indianapolis Star poll discussed here recently provided support for that. He wasn't much of a factor in the poll as a possible VP candidate. With him on the ticket the media would call Kerry and Bayh "Bland and Blander"...

Bayh wins big here because he is very centrist, looks nice, comes from a famous family and hasn't gotten caught doing anything naughty.

Nationally, he is DLC personified and that is the kiss of death this year.

13. Yeah. Why not go for Edwards.
Edwards has a chance (how great or small is open to debate) of carrying his home state and fills the role of the young handsome father. He brings more energy to the ticket as well, and could be groomed for a run in 2012.
