or do you think a no-confidence vote would have already passed by now--assuming the Republicans are the conservative majority and the Democratic either the Labor/Liberal party.

1. Bush would not last a single meeting
with that kind of upfront and lucid dialog.

8. Bush could never have become prime minister
it would be impossible.

The prime minister has to move up from the ranks, proving him/herself.

They also must answer questions from the Commons. That requires someone who is intelligent, coherent and able to answer detailed questions from the opposition. Bush could never do that. Reagan also would not have been to do that.

2. The real question is
would he have ever in a million years been selected to lead the government? Answer - no way.

5. No, the really real question is
would the US survive with a parliamentary system?

3. If we had a parliamentary govt., our entire history would've been diff
I can't even begin to speculate on what our history would've been like as a parliamentary state. I can only suggest that the Civil War may not have occurred, or would have at least occurred later and slavery would've been abolished later. There likely would have been a few more political parties - mainly two or three regional ones. The south may well have been dominated by a regional conservative party, whereas elsewhere there would be liberals (centrists) and social democrats (left).

Of course, if we assume that the same people that became president would have become prime minister, just for the sake of argument, then, yes, Bush would probably have been thrown out (although it's not certain - look at Blair, who's survived thus far). That said, I think it's likely Clinton would have resigned too. In parliamentary systems, lots of governments fall. Carter would probably have been deposed, Reagan might well have after Iran-Contra, so would Johnson and quite possibly Truman. Hoover may have stayed b/c he would've had alarge Republican majority. Same with Wilson.

My 2 cents

4. Indeed our entire history would be different
Sometimes I wish we had a real left-wing party as well.

9. As someone who lives in a country with a parliamentary...
system of government, what I do like about it is the responsibility of the leader of the country having to answer questions from the opposition parties as opposed to the US system where the President does not have to answer to anyone, even when he/she gives the State of the Union Address to Congress. Other than that, the politics are similar, it is one-oneupmanship when in public.
