For those advocating a Kerry/McCain ticket, here's a lesson in how things work.

Constitutionally, the Vice President has two jobs, And two jobs ALONE:

1) From Article 1. Section 3. Clause 4
The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no Vote, unless they be equally divided.

2) To serve as President in the event that the President is unable to serve out his term.

Any other duties are at the request and pleasure of the President only. Too many people forget or do not understand this. McCain, however much of a 'respectable Republican' many of us may think he is, is still a REPUBLICAN and a CONSERVATIVE nonetheless. Any administration (Democrat or Republican) with an opposition party member a heartbeat away from the Presidency and acting as the tiebraking Senate vote is courting disaster.

You Kerry/McCain supporters need to go back and reread (or just plain read) the Constitution:

2. Agreed.
On another site last week someone suggested Colin Powell--yes, the man equally as guilty of fraud, war crimes, treason, etc. as Bush and the rest--even if he regrets hooking up with them now, the damage is done.

Cute picture of the dog and cat, by the way.

3. Nominating a pro-bogus war candidate and repub VP? The Democratic
party might as well fold up its tent and go home. But hey, it's all about winning, right?

23. Florida 2000 proved that it is indeed all about winning
after all look what we ended up with. A hollow shell of a man for president who's one obsession was to "get the guy" who tried to kill his father.

4. I applaud thinking outside the box, however uncomfortable it may be for...
those who like being in a box.

What we need is UNITY, and lots of it.

It's just an idea, folks. Lighten up.

Respectfully,

Keo

11. It's an idea that's crazy and unworkable.
I applaud thinking outside the box when it makes sense. Unfortunately, in our political system, even, say, Jim Jeffords as a running-mate (assuming he was still a Republican) would be a bad idea. The nature of our two-party system dictates that a bipartisan administration would not work. I suspect even McCain knows this and that's why he's flat-out refusing the idea.

Excuse me if my post was a bit inflammitory, but I'm getting sick and tired of hearing about it.

Know who I think Kerry should pick from the 'list'? Edwards.

Know who my 'dream' candidate would be? Like, if Kerry could just go to somebody and tap him or her for the VP spot? Russ Feingold.

On edit: Imagine 2012. A Feingold/Inouye presidency.

6. McCain as SECDEF
While I think a Kerry/McCain ticket will ensure election, all the Kerry/McCain people need to remember that election isn't the only trial that a president must go through. There may be a time when Kerry needs to hand the reigns over to his VP; do the Kerry/McCain people really want to open the posibility of another Republican president?

I think a far better choice for McCain would be as Kerry's Secretary of Defense. He is a Naval Captain, Senator, Vietnam vet, and former POW; he will be able to truly commiserate with the tortured prisoners. Having a Republican in his cabinet will demonstrate that Kerry truly wants to heal the rift created by the Right over the past decade. (After all, who says Presidents can populate their cabinet only with members of their own party?)

Wesley Clark should be his deputy; that way (besides Clark's almost limitless qualifications) there would be a Democrat directly above and directly below the Republican, making sure he and DOD policy don't get too Republican on us.

I still think Edwards would be a better choice for VP than Clark, but if it turns out Clark will help Kerry more, than so be it. (I feel confident having the country in either's hands should the need arise.)

I'm sick of it! And I thought it was a good idea at first also. He is VERY far right. I don't think people here who want him as VP have looked closely at his voting record.

8. A liberal and regular old time Republic is not what I want.
With McCain in his own party maybe they will come down to earth and have a real Republican party and get rid of the Nutty Right Wing War Party.

9. Exactly so.
In the end, I want to see both parties deal intelligently and honorably with the public. McCain is one of the few contemporary GOPers who does so. Let's beat his opponents like a gong and give him a chance to reform his own party.

10. This is just Democrats falling for Republican tricks - AS USUAL. Kerry..
would be assassinated or whatever it takes to put him out of the presidency. Then we would have a Republican president who then would choose another Republican VP - in other words - we would be exactly where we are now - Republicans in charge.

Democrats - quit being silly and pull for our own party and NOT the Republicans.

14. The idea to have some sort of unity cmapaign is....
good. It's that McCain is the WRONG choice. How about one of Maine's two senators? Both Repubs; both voted against convicting Clinton; both women. Still, there ARE nough good Dems, that we don't have to go outside. Any thoughts?

It's not only a STUPID idea, it's insulting to those of us who have been fighting the conservatives long before Bush.

I repeat, a STUPID idea.

That this is only a convenient speculation to build up Kerry, NOT a viable real life choice. No need to revive the primary wars atmosphere over media blather. By the way, with McCain out of the Senate would a Dem be named to replace him?(Just kidding).

26. The fact that top dems are seriously floating or promoting
this plan for total capitulation shows just how lost the deomcratic party is. Given the utter disaster of bush's presidency, you'd think dems could do better than "Hey America, we're practically republicans."

But you cannot put it to rest, as the RNC media is fueling it to death. It's a talking point. Like this one:

GOP pollster Luntz revealed Limbaugh's role in new survey
http://mediamatters.org/items/200405250004

Republican pollster Frank Luntz, CEO and president of Luntz Research Companies, appeared as a guest on the May 21 FOX News Channel's Hannity & Colmes to present the results of his new poll that purportedly showed that a plurality of Democrats say if they had the choice they would prefer Senator Hillary Clinton over Senator John Kerry as their presidential nominee. Luntz admitted radio host Rush Limbaugh had a role in instigating the survey:
