Handy Guide to Barack Obama & Jeremiah Wright's Relationship Was Exploited by the Mainstream Media
The mainstream media took what is an obviously finished primary conclusion that Obama will be the nominee and propagated the "importance" that someone's former pastor was an "issue" after Obama had won 11 straight victories. Hillary Clinton was supposed to close the deal on Super Tuesday and didn't.

After Barack Obama handily beat Hillary Clinton in the Mississippi primary 54-43 on March 11, 2008, the next race was 42 days later in Pennsylvania. What was the mainstream media to do with a race that was supposed to have had the deal sealed by Hillary Clinton a month before?

You guessed it.

The mainstream media was panicking, so they had to link a former pastor to the Presidential new frontrunner by a clumsy, intellectually dishonest concoction of half-truths, misquotes, careless and McCarthyistic guilt by association and roll the message out 24-7 and hope that Hillary Clinton would play along. Of course, she did... knowing her campaign was now in the skids with the inner circle and being in debt.

Here's a timeline that I embellished from an AP article (linked below) of the Jeremiah Wright-Barack Obama relationship:

1972 — Wright becomes pastor of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ (http://www.tucc.org/home.htm).

1985 — Obama begins working as a community organizer in Chicago; meets Wright.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/30/us/politics/30text-wright.html

1988 — Obama embraces Christianity after hearing a Wright sermon on hope.

1992 — Obama joins Trinity United Church; Wright officiates at Obama's wedding.

Feb. 10, 2007 — Obama decides not to have Wright deliver the invocation at the launch of his presidential campaign.

Feb. 22, 2007 — Rolling Stone magazine publishes a profile of Obama that includes Wright using profanity to condemn American racism called "Campaign '08: The Radical Roots of Barack Obama".
http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/13390609/campaign_08_the_radical_roots_of_barack_obama/print

NOTE: Over a year and a few weeks pass by.

March 11, 2008 — Mississippi primary
Barack Obama beats Hillary Clinton 55-43 after the Clintons had vigorously campaigned in the state.
http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2008/03/obama_wins_raci.html

March 13, 2008 — ABC News airs a report on some of Wright's inflammatory remarks. Clips from his sermons begin circulating on TV and the Internet. This is 40 days before the next race in Pennsylvania.

Report: http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/DemocraticDebate/story?id=4443788&page=1
Misuse of information: http://mediamatters.org/items/200803130008

March 14, 2008 — Obama calls Wright's remarks "completely unacceptable and inexcusable;" says the reverend had stepped down from a campaign advisory committee.

March 18, 2008 — Obama delivers speech on race; criticizes Wright but says he can't "disown" him.

NOTE: This event was added to the mix with the Wright "issue":

April 11, 2008 — Reports of Barack Obama having made a speech in San Francisco, CA where the audio was secretly recorded and these words were extracted from the badly produced recording:

"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton Administration and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are going to regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations," according to the Washington Post.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/11/AR2008041103965.html

Hillary Clinton immediately responded:
Barack Obama "showed him to be elitist and vulnerable to the kind of Republican attacks that have sunk Democratic candidates in the past."

April 17, 2008 — Philadelphia Debate (ABC News, Charles Gibson and George Stephanopolous)
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/17/us/politics/17debate.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

April 22, 2008 — Pennsylvania Primary
After polls had Clinton leading by 20+% in polls, Clinton wins by 9.2% and only gains gets less than a dozen more delegates than Obama.

A fantastic timeline of that month and 9 days: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/02/17/pennsylvania-primary-late_n_87069.html

April 28, 2008 — Capping a media blitz after weeks of silence, Wright says criticism of his sermons amounts to criticism of black churches in general.

April 29, 2008 — Obama says he is "outraged" by Wright's "divisive and destructive" comments and their relationship has been permanently damaged.

2. I had to do it for my sanity...
I was trying to figure out when all this bubbled up and it was essentially brought up to fill a 40 day hole between two primary dates, namely Mississippi and Pennsylvania. The way the Royal Punditry talks about Wright and the so-called "bitter comments", you'd think this was going on for months and months.

What has happened with the Wright issue having to fill in a 40 day hole has opened up a whole ugly world of racism and stereotyping where some seem joyous to show their hate.

I am disgusted beyond words and needed to see where all this started.

"I believe the American people deserve a real debate on issues that actually matter like health care, the economy, bringing this war to an end."

Too bad Hillary will stoop to anything to win. And she really has it out for Obama for delaying her corontaion!!

5. Well she should have thought about that before assuming she
was going to win the initial Tuesday.

Poor planning, poor mitigation, poor fiscal responsibility, and poor recovery makes one not that impresssive.

9. And then, Hillary's OP'S Screw up with Robo Calls and Voter Suppression of African-Americans...
kind of makes the Wright flap seem very small when Bill's former campaign OPS...including the founder of Progressive Think Tank "Center for American Progress" turns out to be on Board of a group promoting Voters Suppression...doesn't it?

11. Hillary has no interest in the rights of people to vote. SO many of us realized that
Edited on Thu May-01-08 02:07 AM by truedelphi
When she had her man Carville whisper into Kerry's ears that he should not bother to protest the voting situation in Ohio.

And when she herself phoned Edwards and told him to quit grandstanding and making a fuss about every vote being counted.

She is NOT a friend to democratic processes. She tolerates them but only because she has to run for office to become President.

What we are seeing now is that perhaps the Media will award her the office.

12. there's a little gap in there
I believe 1988-1991 Obama goes to law school at Harvard. I have read the "twenty years" number which is perhaps the 1988-2008 period, but it looks more like 16 years 1992-2008, and he probably did not go to that church very much from 2004 to present since he was in the Senate and on the campaign trail. So more like 12 years, from 1992-2004.

13. Interesting point
The timeline does suggest that in 1988 is when Obama became a Christian (reborn?) due to a sermon by Wright.

The illusion that he was going to Wright's church EVERY Sunday for 20 years is another point of contention...

18. Good catch...
The article I linked had that number...too late to edit the OP, however...

That would make even more of a reason to find an "issue" with 42 days to fill and such a blowout...

19. ADDENDUM: WAPO and NYT had 12 times more articles on Obama/Wright than McCain/Hagee
Just to give a taste how the mainstream media was willing to overcompensate to fill in the 42 days, here's one example:

Wash. Post and NY Times published more than 12 times as many articles mentioning Obama and Wright as they did mentioning McCain and Hagee

Summary: A Media Matters for America review found that since February 27, the date that televangelist John Hagee endorsed Sen. John McCain for president, The New York Times and The Washington Post combined have published more than 12 times as many articles mentioning Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. and Sen. Barack Obama as they have mentioning Hagee and McCain.

(snip)

The Post published 53 articles during that period that mentioned Wright and Obama, compared with three articles mentioning Hagee and McCain. The Times published 46 articles since February 27 mentioning Wright and Obama, compared with five articles mentioning Hagee and McCain.
