Bill Clinton says Obama supporters are elitists
Bill trying to drive a wedge in the democratic party. As I've always said, the Clintons care only about the Clintons, and if the Democratic Party gets in the way, they will destroy it to get what they want.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080501/ap_on_el_pr/democrats;_ylt=AlhCYnlkDibxRJ7Af2TMeXWs0NUE

"Former President Bill Clinton was in West Virginia on his wife's behalf. In Clarksburg, he called her a scrapper and contrasted her appeal among working-class voters with the elitists he said support Obama.

"The great divide in this country is not by race or even income, it's by those who think they are better than everyone else and think they should play by a different set of rules," he said. "In West Virginia and Arkansas, we know that when we see it."

26. Off-topic, but would someone explain to Hillary that she's not really
helping the Democratic Party?

From the link in the OP:

A vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote to continue" a long, self-destructive Democratic campaign, Joe Andrew added in a letter (snip)
"A vote to continue this process is a vote that assists John McCain," Andrew wrote.

In response, Clinton told ABC's "Nightline": "I think this has been good for the Democratic Party. ... But anyone who believes this is bad for the party I just think is not paying attention, because the level of enthusiasm to be part of this process is, from my perspective, helping us build a stronger and deeper Democratic base."

There is a battle in the Democratic party, and that battle is what we are seeing unfold.

I think the party has become the party of the educated and more successful people, and representative of a particular upscale demographic with certain tastes, personal preferences, and personal stances, and that the old New Deal coalition has collapsed. I don't know why people are so resistant to this idea when they hear it expressed, especially since we can see people bragging about this right here every day.

Yes, some of those who "think they are better than everyone else and think they should play by a different set of rules" are in the Republican leadership, but no more so that we have among our own.

I don't think president Clinton is creating a divide here, I think he is describing one.

73. Have you checked the race wealth gap lately?
BO's celebrated core constituency, African Americans, own about 1/7 the wealth of white Americans, are twice as likely to be unemployed, and six times more likely to land in prison.

So can you at least acknowledge that not all of BO's core is elite? Not to mention that 20-30 year olds aren't exactly holding the wealth of nations in their hands, unless their name is Chelsea Clinton.

88. of course I have
I have lived it for 40 years. That is not relevant to this discussion. Obama's core constituency is white, professional, suburban DFA activists - the self-described "progressives."

It proves what I am saying, and speaks to how the AA constituency is taken for granted by many Democrats to make your argument. There is no reason why a Black man should not be given consideration for the presidency, and there is nothing wrong whatsoever for people to vote for him in the primaries.

But the elevation of one person of color to a position of power may or may not be a blow against racism. Were that not true, we would all be admiring the Republicans for promoting Clarence Thomas and Rice to office. The issue is a little more complex than you are making it out to be, and seeing the AA community as a monolithic block and claiming to know what "they" are thinking does nothing to confront or combat racism. It may well represent the opposite of that.

I do not fault Obama - he is brilliant and is doing a great job. Black men are held to a higher standard and carry a greater burden when seeking positions of power. I do not fault people in the AA community for supporting him. But white activists hiding behind that smacks of tokenism to me. I am not saying stop supporting him, I am saying have another look at how you are promoting him.

"Elitist" is about an attitude, by the way. Funny how many people are defensive about that.

98. I agree with most of your post
but it still leaves out African American voters as a core constituency for Obama. I agree that the election of one African Americans necessarily a blow against racism, though the symbolic significance of the Presidency is greater than that of the Supreme Court or other offices, particularly if that person has a progressive or liberal sensibility. Plus, Obama has experience in neighborhood, local, and state governance, for which you must maintain close relationships to people who are not "elites." So, I hesitate to associate Obama with that term any way.

More broadly, I'm personally defensive about calling Obama's constituency "elite" is because it is a common strategy against all Democrats, a strategy perfected by Republican multimillionaires to help them pretend to be populists. The term in itself doesn't distinguish between the status of "elite" due to education versus income, either, in that many well educated people in our society with "cultivated taste," so to speak, are not wealthy. Working at a smaller state university, I also find that many of the white students that I work with support Obama and have an opportunity for higher education, but I certainly would not call them "elite" or even "professional" until they gain employment and a decent income, and living in this community, I constantly see the challenges to them reaching the professional class. Many of them struggle to pay for college and struggle to make a living afterward. So I just do not think it is clarifying to use the term "elite" in an unqualified way; the term is divisive and plays into the stereotypical characterization of Obama supporters as latte-drinking, entitled, out of touch people.

I think Obama is an elite (intelligent, educated, successful.) That is not a bad thing. So long as the campaign does not fall into the trap of appearing elitist (arrogant, condescending.)

I don't think that Obama's constituency (those voting for him) is elite (wealthy and upscale.)

I do think that there is an elitist (arrogant, condescending) element within the activist community, and they are using the Obama campaign as an opportunity to express that.

I also think that almost all Democratic politicians are looking out for the interests of the elite (wealthy and powerful) at least as much as they are looking out for the people, and also pandering to the elite (arrogant and self-righteous and condescending) people within the activist community.

I also think that there is a chronic problem of the Democratic candidates and the party appearing to the general public as elitists (arrogant and condescending and self-righteous.)

The best in the field, the cream of the crop, now mediocre or average is being glorified.

Would you rather have an average surgeon operating on you or the best?

If you were going to trial would you want an average attorney representing you or the best?

If your car is broke down would you want an average mechanic working on it or the best?

If you need repairs done to your home would you want an average repairman or the best?

If you're in class do you want an average teacher or the best?

If you're going in to battle would you want an average general in charge or the best?

Why on Earth do we treat the Presidency any different?

One of the most elite Presidents I can think of was Franklin Roosevelt and he did more for the poor and average income workers than any other President of the 20th century if not since the founding of the nation.

I would suggest to you anytime a political leader or someone in the corporate media uses an Orwellian version of what common sense should tell you is a virtuous word, or a positive and flips that to a negative, alarms should be going off in your head, regarding that person's true motivation.

97. yes, of course
Nothing wrong with being elite - FDR and RFK were from the elite; wealthy, educated.

"Elitist" is not the best word. Did President Clinton even use that word in his remarks, or was that inserted by the person who wrote the article or the OP? Not sure; it is not clear.

I would say "arrogant" and "condescending" and "self-righteous" and I would say that those attitudes are rampant and pervasive in modern liberalism.

Funny how people will deny that, but then turn right around and justify and defend their right to be that way.

100. The ironic thing, is I see those attitudes on the full political spectrum
Bush is certainly not liberal and I believe he gives new meaning to all of those words, you mentioned.

"I would say "arrogant" and "condescending" and "self-righteous" and I would say that those attitudes are rampant and pervasive in modern liberalism."

I do understand why some people would think that modern liberalism has a monopoly on those vices because for the past twenty odd years the corporate media has exclusively tied the word elite in an Orwellian negative manner to the word liberal, turning it in to a memory stack. You can't think of one without thinking of the other, sort of like Saddam/911 or ironically "liberal media". I honestly can't remember them ever uttering the words "conservative elite" and yet this defies logic that it could not be so, unless one believes Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reighley, or Ann Coulter, just to name a few stars in a galaxy of conservative pundits are self-effacing, full of humility and grace.

43. Bill Clinton, you have lost your support from this woman who gave you a pass
for fucking around with a woman the age of your daughter while you held the most imp. position in govt. and, if you could have kept your dick (or is that ego) in your pants, you could have spared us all much grief. However, even after you were re-elected, you could have done something for the good of the party and resigned so that Gore could have astroglided into the white house on the trails of your leavings. But you didn't.

We have a candidate that is inspiring America. Just as your hero, JKF, inspired Americans. Yet you try to undermine this man because he's not part of your political circle within the democratic party. The hypocrisy is stunning. Hillary is not that inspiration. Hillary, that "non-elistist" former Wellesley girl, former Goldwater republican, lawyer, millionaire.. yeah, she's just one of the girls in the break room at WalMart talking about Billy Ray's little girl going naked for pay.

The Clintons need to find a way to be relevant for the democrats because they are fast becoming its ball and chain.

85. LOL..an "elitist?"
Seems to me that an "elitist" would be someone who so shamed his office by his own conduct that he was IMPEACHED. . .and while not convicted, doesn't have the moral foundation to NOT be out campaigning for his wife - and himself - to return to the Oval Office.

Obviously, Bill Clinton thought he was better than everyone else when he didn't consider his position or his marriage vows. Just like all of those Republicans in Congress, from David Vitter and Larry Craig, to Congressman Allen, privilege appararently breeds impropriety, especially when it is handed to those who feel their class makes them entitled.

It amazes me that Bill Clinton can even go out on the campaign trail, after the horrible embarassment of impeachment, and pretend that he doesn't play by a different set of rules.

95. Pft, they act like it and are proud of doing so: elitism - 1. practice of or belief in rule...
...by an elite.

2. consciousness of or pride in belonging to a select or favored group.

1. The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources. (HRC voters are uneducated, redneck, making less than 50K/yr, etc, yada-yada blah blah y'hear it here all the time :eyes:)

2. The sense of entitlement enjoyed by such a group or class. Control, rule, or domination by such a group or class.

120. I think he meant to say
"nasty elitists", which would have been much more accurate.

Now that Obama has destroyed the Democratic Party from within based on nothing but his monumental ego and self-serving ambition (no, Hillary supporters are not going to vote for Obama), it doesn't really make that much of a difference I suppose. Still, it didn't have to be.

But you can't expect the level of vile hatred and vitriol that Obama's supporters have directed at both Clintons, from the very first day of the primaries and every day since, to not have had an impact. The race-baiters and smear merchants from the Obama camp don't ever stop, and have acted far worse than entitled or 'elitist'. So Bill, as usual, is being gentle while being honest.

One has only to spend ten minutes on DU any time over the past year and a half to see it in all of its ugliness. The very nasty elitists look down on the Clintons and the people they represent. Should the elitists succeed in forcing their candidate down Democratic throats, you can bet that more than just a few (million) will identify with how the Clintons have been treated. I know I will, as will probably most DU'ers not in the cult.
