****Obama Supporters. Remember. This Too Shall Pass****
Edited on Thu May-01-08 09:48 PM by rhombus
Obama's campaign has been on a roller coaster ride from the get-go. Just look how far this improbable journey has lasted, and we're still moving. No one gave Barack Obama a realistic shot. At the beginning he was a 'fantasy' candidate, someone who 'excites'. So said the media. Then he won Iowa. Hmmm. Then he came close in New Hampshire. Ahhh, Obama doesn't have a chance. Then he won South Carolina big, even dumbfounding the 'experts'.

Feb 5 came and Obama stood firm. He wasn't swallowed up. He wasn't blown away. Then the wins and sometimes losses came. We are still standing.

So buckle up. Each phase has its lessons. We are in the fighting phase. The next phase is the win phase which is coming shortly. Let the media gloat. But we'll have the last laugh.

44. BEWARE peeps
I'm noticing a real trend on this board and others (Kos etc), of posts that all have the same theme, the EXACT SAME THEME - one of defeat, despair however cleverly rationalized by the poster as genuine concern. Now I don't know the OP here, and you may be totally genuine. If you are then you'll understand why it is still important to notify posters of the pervasiveness of this tactic.

REMEMBER - Obama's biggest and strongest support comes from places like this. His internet campaign has been second to none. Would not surprise me at all if the effort was on to undermine that. And if you don't imagine republicans have the patience to join up, act as innocuous supporters over time, the odd post here and there, then you underestimate them.

So regardless of whether the OP is genuine or not - PAY NO ATTENTION!! The polls were bound to take a wee dip following the attention re: Wright, look for them to improve markedly from now 'til next Tuesday. I firmly believe that even more high profile supers in the coming days, and some strong wins in NC, Indiana will bring this to an end. HOLD ON OBAMA-ITES, THE END IS IN SIGHT!!!

46. BTW, for EVERY diary/post you see repeating this theme
then please, repost this warning and one similar to ensure there is a counter for supporters to read. Plenty visit these sites and NEVER post.

2. I really really hope you are right
I am trying hard not to get demoralized but it feels like his support is collapsing and it feels like a redux of four years ago, when Dean's support just collapsed as the media kept playing the so-called scream over and over. I remember how hard it was to stay motivated to keep volunteering, and I am feeling the same way now. I think Clinton is headed for a blowout in Indiana and a better than expected showing in North Carolina and it's too late to change it unless something damaging comes out about Clinton over the weekend. I know the polls are a few days behind and most of the national polls are not even that bad, but the way they are being reported feeds into the unelectable meme and may cause further bleeding of white voters. It's a vicious cycle that may be too late to stop. I know Obama has an insurmountable delegate lead but it may not be enough.

Obama is far from perfect but I do believe he is a genuinely decent person who is more authentic and principled than most politicians. It just breaks my heart to see him go down not because of anything he did wrong but because the media is obsessed with guilt by association. This is why it's so hard for good people to get elected to office...if someone isn't a total sleazebag with actual scandals the opponents just make stuff up, seize on gaffes, or tar them with guilt by association, and the media goes along with it in the interest of so-called fairness.

Wright happened for a reason. I'm not discouraged by one week of polls or even one month of polls. Obama has been in this position before.

with you either.

You always find a way to accentuate the negative and to minimize the positive.

If you actually want to help Obama I'd suggest writing posts like you just did and DON'T POST THEM!

Instead, call a friend and commiserate, or worry silently. But bringing everybody else down is a bummer. You are just contributing to others working less hard, and being less pumped up.

Quit wishing for bad luck and knocking on wood.

22. I don't wish for bad luck
And I am sorry if I am too negative, but I have been getting really down about the primary, and I can't talk to my mom about it because she's depressed in general right now, and I don't want people in real life to think I am psycho for getting so emotional about a campaign.

24. JQC...I've had the same thoughts about said poster. The posts are
oddly similar to those of that Tropics Dude, and NJS, and we know how that played out. Every thought or doubt doesn't warrant a post on a message board. Some people are fair weather friends, and have the need to back the "winner" to fill some void in their own lives. And I agree that Obama has been here before, and risen above it.

We all know what the M$M does. They did it to Kucinich, they did it to Edwards, and now it's Obama's turn. They are hellbent on picking our nominee for us, but I still say NOT THIS TIME! Thanks for your post.

32. Madame, you don't have to explain yourself to me. But, most of us
know that politics is a contact sport, and everyone's not suited to it. All we ask is that you not bum the rest of us out. Perhaps you could find some Obama supporters on this board that you could pm your thoughts to (not me, I don't do depression) when you're feeling unsure, or perhaps you should take some time away, until these contests are over?

38. I work in politics, and this election is making me question whether I have the stomach for it
I work in Washington and my dream was to be a high level campaign staffer someday, but I am wondering if I have the stomach for it. It is painful to see a good man get dragged down with all these manufactured scandals because they can't find enough real dirt, and it makes me think my boss is right that most politicians are jerks behind the scenes because the amount of crap public figures take from the press scares away good people.

33. Well perhaps you could make a pledge to lift people up instead of bringing them down.
I was on the phones last night for Obama and people are excited and hopeful. They aren't depressed and fearful.

Think before you post. Ask yourself, "Will this have a negative impact or a positive impact on people.

Thank you for considering your impact on others.

I hate the way the media overplays things, I believe Obama is a genuinely decent person who is more authentic and principled than most, and I hate how it is hard for good people to get elected to office.

I just think that this guilt by association BS will end up tearing him down in the general, as much as I deplore it. Guess I'm part of the vicious cycle.

Plenty of time.

McSame is pushing the same hated policies as Bush, and is only marginally less incompetent. He's running on a "more war, fewer jobs" platform - I'm thinking that victory won't be too difficult.

36. That's what I tell everybody..
And, Chris Redfern says "it's not about the handwringing"..

<snip>

"By and large, the group that matters most at this point — the uncommitted superdelegates, who are likely to hold the balance of power — still seem to view their decision the way the Obama campaign would like them to see it. They suggest that they are more sympathetic to the argument that they should follow the will of the voters as expressed by the delegates amassed by the candidates when the primary season is done rather than following Mrs. Clinton’s admonitions to select the candidate they think would best be able to defeat Senator John McCain and the Republicans in November.

“It’s about the numbers, and the numbers are the numbers,” said Chris Redfern, the chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party and an uncommitted superdelegate. “It’s not about hand-wringing. And Senator Obama has the lead.”
