I have to share this, about a skinny black dude:
indie_ana_500 (68. You think a skinny black man who had all the bricks stacked against him, but who is winning...isn't a fighter?

You think a skinny black dude who was an unknown a few years ago but who just made history (repeatedly) in fund raising during a presidential primary....is milquetoast?

You think someone who has been impliedly called too black to win, not black enough to win, unqualified, then elitist, vague, naive, too young, a "kid" (Bill Clinton called him that), a "boy" (some KY politician called him that), a liar (his own former pastor called him that)....well, you get the idea.

After all that...HE....IS.....WINNING. He's not winning because he's failing to fight back. He's fighting back in a different way than you are used to. Voters aren't throwing him votes just 'cause he's a good guy. OBAMA HAS ANSWERED ALL THE INSULTS, ALL THE ACCUSATIONS. And he's still standing. He has come farther than Clinton can ever dream of going.

If you think a biracial kid from Chicago who ended up practically being the Democratic nominee, against all odds, hasn't had to learn how to defend himself along the way, then you don't know much about life.

He doesn't stand on a stump, raise his hand in the air, and shrilly yell, "I'm a fighter!" That's not his style. But his style apparently works. He's winning.

If anyone believes that Obama won't be kicking some McCain ass as soon as Hillary gets out of the way, you are in for a rude ass awakening! McCain ain't gonna know what hit him. What Obama knows how to do is get to the heart of the matter without the one he's aiming at quite picks up on it; just ask Bill.

4. Never
Never in the history of this country has a candidate been faced more microscopic scrutiny and borne it with such grace.

Never have the mudrackers tried so hard and come up so empty in finding a moral or ethical defect.

In the end all of their parsing of every syllable and every manner and every moment of his life and all they could come up with

is a pastor, a pin, and a phrase.

Never has our country looked more pathetic.

9. actually there is a basic decency in the American people and when a real piling on starts up they
don't like it. My parents were Goldwater types really passionate anti communists and all of that. I remember though that there would be times when the media really started to pick on someone and they didn't like it. Oddly enough I distinctly remember my mother sticking up for Rep Shirley Chisolm one time.

And if it is perceived that it is done on race then it will boomerang. People really do like Tiger and they like the fact that they like him. Everyone wants to pretend that they were the ones that cheered Jackie Robinson on and it was some other idiot that was unfair to him.

10. I wouldn't know, seeing as my liberal dad told me
before Iowa that a black man would never win, and then I told him a woman wouldn't win either. We haven't talked about politics since. It's sad, because we are both liberals, and he turned 80 on Monday.
He was the brain who also said when * got elected Hoovervilles would be reinvented; he's a smart liberal, but I know he thinks if Hill gets in, so will the big dawg and everything will be well. He might have changed his tune, but there's no talking anymore. For me, that's epically sad because that's what we had in common; distain for *. Now, it's all off limits.

20. I saw a clip tonight on CNN
campaign trail coverage, and that was the man's response to why he was voting for Hillary, "because we get 2 for 1, we get Bill back.." I think a lot of people are voting for her because he's "going to be there." So much for her own merit and breaking that glass ceiling. Ah the difference between Hillary Rodham, and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

mistake/bad reason to vote for a president, especially this year. It's SO critical we get this right.

8. I think Sen. Obama knew going in what it would take
He knew that he would have to endure the worst kind of attacks as his Primary challenge gained notoriety. He also knew that he would have to run twice as fast just to be considered keeping up.

I don't think anybody needs to doubt his mettle; we would do better to consider what we, the Americans, are made of. In the final analysis, both Barack Obama and the people of the United States (at least enough of us) are up to the task!

18. Excuse me?
Barack Obama was born in Honolulu Hi in 1961, where his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham was a freshman at the University of Hawaii and his father was an exchange student from Kenya at the East West Center. You can see for yourself on the Obama website bio of Obama and numerous published stories in newpapers and magazines.
After 2 years his parents separated. When he was 5 or 6 she remarried and took him to Jakarta Indonesia for 4 years. He returned to Honolulu and spent grades 5-12 at Punahou School, a private school built by Christian missionaries in 1841.
I grew up about 6 blocks away from where he did, and went to the same school, albeit a few years before.
It's easy to check up on it, see for yourself.

22. I'm reading 'Dreams from My Father', and I stand corrected. I think
I got so caught up in his mom's story I forgot his. His family moved around so much I forgot about his birth; I got into his younger years in Jakarta, with his step-dad. It's a good read, and so very different than how I grew up. I also remember his family's year(s) in TX, when racism was prevalent enough for them to want to leave; I live in TX now, but didn't in my formative years.
Forgive me.

24. I have a different view because its close to home
I have travelled a lot overseas, and having grown up in Hawaii usually I get the response "you're not like other Americans we know". There is something wonderful about growing up there, and I see it shining thru in Obama. It's that 'internal paradise', the spirit of Aloha, and we all drank it in like mother's milk.
I hope that we will see the Hawaii candidate in the White House soon. Then the real work of repairing and healing will come. We will all need to work together to undo the damage that has been wrought the past 8 years (and more if you go back to the election of '94 and the Gingrich years).
Keeping the faith and hope...
Aloha,
~Mme. G.

46. I didn't mean to imply Obama was born & raised in Chicago...he was born in Hawaii....
raised there for a few years, then I think they moved to Indonesia for a few years, then back to....not sure where. He went to college in New York...then, while still a young man, he moved to Chicago and got involved in community service and made a name for himself. This is what I'm referring to.

A skinny biracial dude with big ears - there's no doubt in my mind that it wasn't easy for him. He no doubt encountered a few obstacles along the way, what with his racial background, his leanness, his being so well educated compared to some others he was dealing with, his not having been born there, etc. He had to deal with some pretty rough characters, I'm sure.

So I meant that he hailed from Chicago, where it seems he "grew up" and came into his own, so to speak. However he dealt with his enemies...whether he outsmarted them or charmed them or whatever ...it worked.

I didn't reference Hawaii because he was so young there....or Indonesia, because I don't know what it's like there. But Chicago...well, I think we all know that Chicago can be...well, rough. You learn how to deal with certain situations, or you don't last there.

29. I don't value people or things based on how excited the American people get over it/them.
Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people, I think it's been said. This is the country that went crazy for beanie babies and "American Idol" and even George W. Bush, at one point.

I think Obama is a fine candidate. Winning is the important thing at this point, and yes, he is doing that important thing.

The people I hold in highest esteem couldn't win, unfortunately. :( Popularity, on its own, isn't necessarily a mark of quality or value. Which isn't to say it isn't important when it's the actual goal.

I don't know if I'm making sense -- just stopped in for a few and am now going to take a nap.

41. I try not to swear in a subject line, sometimes unsuccessfully, so
I'll just say down here that this is one of the best posts I've seen on DU in probably a year, or two, or three, or...

It might be time we all wake up and start kicking poor Johnny McCain's sorry behind. It shouldn't take more than a few weeks to make him look like an idiot, even through the predictable filter of the corporate media. Fucking well time to get on with it.

Let's let the rest of the primary states vote, get a reasonable compromise on Michigan and Florida, and let the math demonstrate itself when it's over. It seems self-evident how this will turn out.
