About 70% of the time, it follows something asshole-ish and there is an negative correlation between # of those smilies and content of post.

14. Not destroyed, just used less and in the right places.
If you use :rofl: when something's genuinely side-splittingly funny (subjective, I know), then you can use it with impunity.

If, however, you're responding sarcastically to a post you think ridiculous and use :rofl:, it seems maniacally forced and you just come off as being insane. No one who's making a sarcastic point would actually roll around on his back unless he were touched in the head. It's not that kind of humour.

30. With all the people here who seem to have
reading comprehension issue's and that are :sarcasm: and humor challenged,

the emoticons work wonders and aren't infantile at all, IMHO.

It is difficult to 'type' emotions and hope others will 'pick up on it'.

Some people just don't 'get' it unless you draw them a picture.

although just writing sarcasm in parens would accomplish the same thing. Sorry, I find the smilies (except for the hugs for some reason) to be childish. My opinion. I never use them and seem to get my point across just fine.

I dig the whole 'meta' aspect of them.
