Kantor vid: wrong explanation, right conclusion
I had strong feeling immediately that something was wrong with the Kantor video story. But, I assumed that the video was real and tried to understand how the comments couldn't possibly be as they seemed. So, I posted a possible an alternate explanation -- duly noting that it could be wrong. However, my bottom line was that it MADE NO SENSE for Kantor to be saying what he had allegedly said.

Well, my explanation was wrong because no explanation was necessary. The video was faked, as the diector of "The War Room" himself has said. Now the media is backing away from it very quickly.

But I do want to express my disappointment that so many of my fellow DUers were quick to judge me an idiot, liar, hypocrite and all related synonyms. I posted in good faith. And I will say this: whether I agree or disagree with posts on this board, I have never personally insulted a poster's character or intelligence. I have responded negatively to the content of some posts, but never attacked a poster personally. I even tried to remain civil to those on my earlier post who went out of their way to dismiss me as a fool. Yes, it's just an "internet discussion board," and yes, one needs a "thick skin" to participate here -- but the groundless bashing of a long-time member is still hurtful and contrary to DU's oft-proclaimed self-image as a welcoming, friendly community.

5. Regardless of the outcome of that video
insulting someone for suggesting a different explanation is wrong.

Aggressive conformity to past ideas begets conservatism.

6. I don't care if he prays to her while kneeling in broken glass
It's radioactive, and thinking up conspiracy theories about it will just lead to people accusing you of dirty tricks. Personally, I think the whole viral thing is more likely a deliberate distraction designed to make Obama supporters look bad by crying foul over something that can't be proved as a foul (and anyhow, like I fucking care what a campaign aide said in 1992).

Once more: it's radioactive. Don't touch it any more.

2. And does increasing the volume of a video qualify as "faking" or "doctoring" it?
If words were edited in or out, that would be easy enough to detect. But I notice that nobody's claiming that.

3. It looks like a 1993 WP review of the movie has an interesting interpretation

The War Room (PG)
By Desson Howe
Washington Post Staff Writer
November 12, 1993

<snip>

"War Room" is shot in the nonscripted, cinema-verite style by D. A. Pennebaker (whose follow-around films on President Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey and Bob Dylan are documentary classics) and Chris Hegedus. Whether Carville and company are play-acting somewhat for the cameras becomes less important as the film progresses. One can only keep up an act for so long -- especially in the throes of a campaign. Carville's tearful farewell speech to his staff as they close up just before the election, Stephanopoulos's frank talk with a potential blackmailer and a Mickey Kantor comment about the people of Indiana (when it looks as though Clinton's ahead in Dan Quayle's state) attest to this.

and I wish Howe had spelled out a little more clearly just what he heard, since that's the issue of the day.

12. So this was talked about back in '93?
I listened to the clip from the original documentary with the sound turned all the way up, and Kantor is indeed saying what we all thought he was saying.

Sorry, Clinton people. This story's got some looooong legs

24. about 1:23 on the DVD
according to calipendence on another thread. Let us know what you think. I watched part 9 of the whole documentary posted on youtube, not just the original viral video. You can hear him say: "Doesn't matter. These people are shit. ...Excuse me...mutter mutter white house" (Note full period after "shit.") You can also hear the "worthless white n*r" if you turn your volume up full blast.

Again, what I heard is from the full documentary posted online. Curious to see what you get from your DVD.

4. I think some DUers are quietly eating crow right now
And I think you are right. It would not have made sense for Kantor to say those things.

and you are a bit too sanctimonious for my tastes.

18. read your last paragraph again.
if you can honestly read that and not think of the term "sanctimonious" then you and I are not using the same version of english.

I'd say your intent was to play the victim in a spiteful sanctimonious tone, in order to castigate anyone who disagreed with you in a gloating manner.

:)

not that it matters, you missed my initial point: that this smells like the "faked" memo to dan rather.

19. I'm not playing the victim.... I was a victim....
of personal attacks. And how does one object to people disagreeing in a "gloating manner" without crossing the line into "sanctimony"?

And yes, that was my original point, which does matter -- that something smelled about this Kantor thing from the moment it surfaced.

20. well, I think the worst I did was claim to be a pink centaur in your thread
so if you felt victimized by that, I apologize.

but I would also point out that you have to view the timeline FAIRLY. When you posted the thread, the counter story of a faked video was NOT KNOWN.
so.... if you could view it in that context, you have to let go of your mantle of victimhood at least a little bit.

15. Have you not noticed that this is how anyone here
who dares to post anything positive about Clinton or dares to question anything about Obama gets treated each and every time?

It's disgraceful.
