Ok I have to ask
How many here really think that Bush would not veto any bill passed that would put a tax on big oil? Hillary says give a "gas holiday" by cutting out the federal tax on gas, and pay for it by a windfall tax on big oil. First off I don't think that it could get through congress this year, no matter what, but if it did, and they passed Hillary's plan for a windfall tax, Bush would veto it in a heart beat. This is all politics.

1. From what I've been able to gather it's like a big poker game...
...McCain proposes a gas tax holiday...Clinton says, in effect, "I'll see your gas tax holiday, and raise you a way to pay for it." Obama did't ante up, correctly noting that the whole thing is a suckers bet.

6. Yes it's a poker game
But when it comes to laying down the cards, Bush plays the veto and oil companies win again!

There was a thing called the Windfall Profits Tax Act and the Natural Gas Policy Act of 1978.

People WERE PISSED about having to pay $.50 a gallon.

But then, there was a bunch of old radical hippies among the group leading the charge.

Wonder what happened to them?

3. ONe of them is proposing the same short sided position today.
No new thoughts, no outlook on the long-run impact. A solution for today, even if it means tomorrow crumbles. What good is short-term planning?

5. Taking the tax off gas will just give the oil companies more
incentive to raise gas prices. If you take tax off gas demand will go up and the oil companies will be able to charge more, just a matter of supply and demand. As far as a windfall profit tax, that's also ridiculous, it's not a crime to make money. As soon as a windfall tax is put on oil companies you will see gas lines like in the 70s..
