Obama Says Teamsters Need Less Oversight
By Brody Mullins and Kris Maher
Word Count: 2,009

Sen. Barack Obama won the endorsement of the Teamsters earlier this year after privately telling the union he supported ending the strict federal oversight imposed to root out corruption, according to officials from the union and the Obama campaign.

It's an unusual stance for a presidential candidate. Policy makers have largely treated monitoring of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters as a legal matter left to the Justice Department since an independent review board was set up in 1992 to eliminate mob influence in the union.

And they were both right about it. The special oversight of the Teamsters is long outdated. They've cleaned up their act a lot.

WASHINGTON - Barack Obama on Monday said if elected president he would examine the strict government oversight of the Teamsters union aimed at rooting out corruption, but denied any blanket commitment to end the federal monitoring.

Obama was discussing a Wall Street Journal report that said he won the endorsement of the Teamsters after privately telling it he backed an end to special federal oversight set up to eliminate the influence of organized crime in the union.

"I wouldn't make any blanket commitments," the Illinois senator told ABC's "Good Morning America."

May 5th, 2008 | WASHINGTON -- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama did not promise to end federal oversight of the Teamsters in exchange for an endorsement, a union official said Monday.

"Senator Obama has promised us nothing in exchange for our endorsement," spokesman Bret Caldwell said.

The Teamsters endorsed Obama in February.

MI and FL were penalized by not recognizing their delegates immediately after the vote was counted. Signed pledges that would override the rules? I can only say I have not seen such a pledge. And to Pelosi and Obama trying to pressure SD's to take orders instead of voting their conscience I can only say I am glad it has not been successful.

But you should try posting what makes Hillary or Obama different than McCain, it will make your transition much easier, when DU shifts gears shortly.

26. Now my grandfather was a sailor /
Edited on Mon May-05-08 09:55 PM by Old Crusoe
He blew in off the water /

My father was a farmer /

and I, his only daughter /

Took up with a no-good mill-workin' man from Massachusetts /

Who died from too much whiskey /

And left me these three faces to feed . . .

James Taylor. "Millworker."

I side with the working people, having descended from that stock, and because unions stand up for those people's dignity, I'll take the union any day over their owner-class Reagan-voting union-busting Republican asshole masters.

63. I've had some real fine exchanges on these boards with rodeodance,
but there's a couple things we don't see eye-to-eye on.

As for the good Senator Obama, I was impressed that Stevie Wonder took the stage with him this evening in Indianapolis. Great campaigns deserve great musicians, and Obama had one up there tonight. Wonder may be clinically blind but he sees a lot farther than most of the rest of us.

If I were trying to hunt down two people to AFFIRM what's good about life, I could do a whole lot worse than Barack Obama and Stevie Wonder.

79. I keep thinking about how some women want to be princesses.
Edited on Mon May-05-08 10:49 PM by Old Crusoe
They want the dashing prince to travel the kingdom, his loyal retinue in tow, with the glass slipper in one hand and binocs in the other, scanning the little towns and countryside for the one special, special girl whose dainty foot fits the slipper.

Happiness of untold bliss and deliverance ensues, not only because the prince inherits the whole shebang from the old man, but because being his bride validates the girl's ego and shows up the ugly stepsisters who made her scrub the floor all those dreary years.

All the girl has to manage is to have the magic coach back by midnight for the spell to work.

Hillary Clinton seemed to have lost track of the time and after Feb. 5th, the prince was gaining popularity in the kingdom and dammit it all, he already HAD a wife. And 2 kids, too. And there was no slipper.

Stuck in the post-Feb. 5th fairy tale landscape, Hillary switched fairy tales. She's no longer bitter Cinderella waiting for the rich stud with the glass shoe. Now she's the witch in SNOW WHITE, weighing how much poison to put in that apple. "The nuclear option" was confirmed today by the Clinton camp.

Jesus, I'm sick of this primary.

All the evidence he has is from the Wall Street Journal. I'm sure they have the union's best interests at heart.:eyes:

91. not very good at reading treads
1) Republican paper
2) Anti union
3) have to buy a subscription to read the article
4) quotes a private agreement without a source even an anonymous one
5) Ties Union activity to mob activity

Is there no limit to how low you will go to support the failing candidacy of Clinton?

Have you no self respect left?
