1. Republicans robo calls in Indiana target Obama
Mon May 5, 5:40 PM Jed Report

Republican group targets Obama with last-minute robocalls

A pro-Republican anti-choice group is behind a robocall campaign urging pro-life Indiana voters to vote against Barack Obama in tomorrow's primary.

The group, the National Right to Life Committee, attacks Obama's pro-choice record, telling voters: "You can vote in either party’s primary. If you vote in the Democratic primary, please do not vote for Barack Obama."

Given that there is no meaningful difference between Clinton and Obama on issues of reproductive freedom, the only reasonable explanation for these calls is that the group, National Right to Life, is trying to boost Clinton's performance in tomorrow's primary in the hopes of extending the Democratic nomination battle, thereby helping John McCain's candidacy.

Right to life thinks they have the right to break the law as well.

2. The Field: Indiana & North Carolina Predictions: Clinton +1 Delegate

Indiana & North Carolina Predictions: Clinton +1 Delegate

By Al Giordano May 5 The Field

On Tuesday, voters in Indiana and North Carolina will decide the last major delegate cache: 187 pledged delegates to the Democratic National Convention from the two states.

The Field estimates that the final tally from both states combined will be 94 for Clinton to 93 for Obama. (Details, Congressional district by district, and on statewide percentages, appear below.)

...No matter how the press spins tomorrow (and it’s a given that the results will be spun more favorably for Clinton, because the media has in its DNA and profit motive a desire to keep up the public illusion that this is still a contest), a virtual draw (in this prediction, +1 delegate for Clinton, in which each candidate wins one state) should signal to enough of the remaining 270 or so undeclared superdelegates that it is time to get off the fence and rally behind Obama as the nominee (although many will wait until after the final primaries on June 3 before saying so aloud).

If the delegate battle is a virtual tie, the margins of victory really won’t matter on Tuesday. People will need to click reset, and move on from the spin and concerns that revolved around previous primaries and caucuses. (Terms like “double digit lead” are effectively irrelevant starting now.)

3. Robo call scandal in NC: Jerome Armstrong & WVWV - what's the deal?

Jerome Armstrong & WVWV - what's the deal?

by jakester, Mon May 05, 2008

So it turns out that WVWV, the group behind the mysterious robocalls in North Carolina,
is a client of Jerome Armstrong's firm, WebStrong.
I apologize for this short diary, but I'm curious to know why he hasn't said
anything about this before.

He's one of the few bloggers, in fact, not to comment on this issue, although Glenn Smith did last week in a diary here.

I don't know that Jerome's connection with WVWV means anything in the larger picture, but I guess I find it weird that I had to find out about it through trolling Facebook and looking for more WVWV connections. I assume Jerome has a hand in their current PR strategy, yes?

Unfortunately, I don't think this helps in WVWV making it's case that it's not in the bag for Hillary Clinton...

4. The Dark Side Welcomes Hillary -suggests she could form pro war coalition
Monday, May 5, 2008 The Personal IS Political

The Dark Side Welcomes Hillary

"Hillary's become the Lieberman of the Democratic party." That was recently written in the conservative National Review, and it was meant as a good thing. Those paying attention in the last few months may have noticed that many hardcore Repubilcans have come to admire Hillary's campaign, admiring it as a reflection of their own values and disgraceful tactics:

She's running a right-wing campaign. She's running the classic Republican race against her opponent, running on toughness and use-of-force issues, the campaign that the elder George Bush ran against Michael Dukakis, that the younger George Bush waged in 2000 and then again against John Kerry, and that Ronald Reagan--'The Bear in the Forest'--ran against Jimmy Carter and Walter F. Mondale.

<...>

She might run to the right of McCain, if she makes it to the general election, and get the votes of rebellious conservatives. Or she, Lieberman, and McCain could form a pro-war coalition...

That was from the conservative Weekly Standard, saying the same things that I've been saying all along, although they come at it from a different angle--I'm trying to warn Democrats that Hillary is bringing the destructive policies and insidious tactics of the GOP to the Democratic Party, while the Republicans are salivating as they watch a leading Democrat turn more and more to the dark side.

7. More on The Gas Tax Holiday Nonsense - more reject

More on The Gas Tax Holiday Nonsense

By: John Cole May 6, 2008 at 12:11 am

More elites voice their opinions:

More than 200 economists, including four Nobel prize winners, signed a letter rejecting proposals by presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and John McCain to offer a summertime gas-tax holiday.

Columbia University economist Joseph Stiglitz, former Congressional Budget Office Director Alice Rivlin and 2007 Nobel winner Roger Myerson are among those who signed the letter calling proposals to temporarily lift the tax a bad idea. Another is Richard Schmalensee of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who was member of President George H.W. Bush’s Council of Economic Advisers.

Since oil is apparently the only thing we talk about anymore, I have a great idea for the 2008 Presidential election. We should elect two people with extensive ties to oil. Real oil industry insiders, who have experience and know how these things work. I bet we could get oil prices down in no time if we do that.

Oh. Wait. Nevermind.

Obama's campaign headquarters vandalized

VINCENNES, Ind. - A local campaign office has been vandalized just 24 hours before election day in Indiana. An investigation is underway currently as to who is behind the destruction of Senator Barack Obama's Vincennes campaign headquarters. The vandalism occured sometime Sunday night.

When police arrived witnesses told them one important item was missing. "vandals apparently broke this glass and stole an american flag that once stood on display in this window."

11. Betting on stupid

Betting on stupid

Betty Cracker

Everyone knows the gas tax holiday is a stupid idea. Anti-Obama, pro-Clinton economist and NYT columnist Paul Krugman admits it's a bad idea, along with just about every other reputable economist with an opinion on the issue.

Hillary Clinton is smart enough to know it's a dumb idea too, so why is she pushing it? Because she's betting on stupid. She knows the idea sounds good to low-information voters, i.e., those who "go with their gut," the kind of voters who choose candidates based on whether or not they'd be fun to have a beer with. In other words, the type of voters who almost elected George W. Bush twice.

The anti-intellectual tone of the Clinton campaign would be funny if it weren't so potentially damaging. The "just us folks" vs. "nancy-pants intellectuals" strategy has long been the GOP standard. It's all they've got since the rich people they actually serve aren't numerous enough to elect them if they ran on their real agenda -- creating more wealth and power for the wealthy and powerful.

As the GOP has demonstrated repeatedly -- most recently in 2004 -- betting on stupid isn't a sucker's bet. As noted intellectual Albert Einstein said, "Only two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidy, and I'm not sure about the former."

...As if the Bush administration's problems stem from an infestation of intellectuals in the White House. Still, it's a tried and true populist line.
But a decidedly non-elitist at the town hall meeting failed to reliably join in the anti-intellectual torch and pitchfork mob Senator Clinton was attempting to rouse:

....An ordinary voter begged to differ, however. Stephanopoulos turned the mike over to a woman who said she supported Obama and said she makes less than $25,000 a year.

"I do feel pandered to when you talk about suspending the gas tax," the woman said, adding: "Call me crazy but I actually listen to economists because I think they know what they've studied."

Another Convert

A reader writes:

As a Brit who's just moved to Vancouver I've always slightly favored the
Clintons and never quite understood the antipathy towards Hillary that
exists in America. But last night's speech was the most depressing I have ever seen.
Filled with pandering to the fear of the outsider, and no sign of vision,
charity or even humanity. She now seems so morally crippled by the desire
for power that it's actually uncomfortable to watch.

If the Clintons somehow manage to win the nomination this way, it will be one of the
most depressing political moments in recent history. Even taking into account Bush-Kerry.

13. Clinton’s 2005 Iraq Statement Makes Her Unelectable Against McCain

Clinton’s 2005 Iraq Statement Makes Her Unelectable Against McCain

May 5, 2008 at 6:18 PM by David at The Political Chase

I’m beginning to wonder if Hillary can do any more damage to the Democratic Party than she’s already done, regardless of how long she stays in the race. This statement Clinton made in 2005 on Iraq should convince John McCain and Democrats she’s the best person to be the Republican Party’s Vice Presidential nominee.

"Senator McCain made the point earlier today, which I agree with, and that is, it’s not so much a question of time when it comes to American military presence for the average American; I include myself in this. But it is a question of casualties," said Clinton. "We don’t want to see our young men and women dying and suffering these grievous injuries that so many of them have. We’ve been in South Korea for 50-plus years. We’ve been in Europe for 50-plus. We’re still in Okinawa with respect to protection there coming out of World War II."

In the unlikely event that Clinton wins the Democratic nomination, the Republicans will tear her to pieces on her Iraq position alone. This will be run in GOP ads 24-hours a day until the November election and will also render useless the highly effective ad the DNC released last week.

The 'Obama eagle': Lost his son in Iraq, now he wants the troops home

Chad on Mon, 05/05/2008

It was a nice spring day in South Bend, Indiana. Sunny and warm can be the ticket to spending the day doing a number of activities. But Jesse Cao was standing outside in downtown South Bend all day in an eagle costume holding an Obama sign. All day.

I drove by about 4-5 times, seeing him out there. Finally, I had to ask what his reason for standing out there.

Cao told me his son, a 1st Lieutenant, died in Iraq 3 years ago. And he was out there to work to being his friends home from the war. He said we should focus on Afghanistan.

I asked him how the reaction had been. He said tons of people were honking and stopping by during the 4 days he had been out there.

Broad Stripes and Bright Stars: Youths ruin system by actually using right to vote

Published: Tuesday, May 6, 2008

…Kids, go ahead and waste your youth, but leave the electoral process out of it.
For years, the youth of America were satisfied with their music videos and their caffeinated soft drinks. Politics never made it to the roundtable discussions amidst rounds of Mario Kart.
Perhaps drunk on the power of electing their favorite American Idol, today’s youth are elevating elders’ eyebrows because of their political activity.
…The 2008 Iowa caucuses tripled the number of participants aged 18 to 29 from the 2004 caucus. The majority (57 percent) of these whippersnappers voted for Barack Obama.

Actually, we do know how 18 to 20 year olds received the right to vote. The same old malarkey you hear today along the lines of “being old enough to die for your country means you’re old enough to drink a beer” was being used decades ago. Just replace drinking with voting and you’ve got yourself the 26th Amendment. …more at the link

By proposing the gas tax holiday, an idea only a fool or an

to the world that she thinks her voters are easy marks. Some
of them probably resent it, or could be encouraged to do so.
And the same goes for John McCain in the general election: the

27. they are overestimating the AA vote on election day
projections are higher than they should be in NC because they assume that the
African American voting pattern during early voting will persist on election day.

The truth is that democrats push early voting, AA advocates PUSH early voting.

Expect the AA turnout to be a lower percent on election day than was during early voting.

How much lower I don't know, but significant.

28. NC "Talking About Politics": Split only healed if Obama is the nominee

We Will Unite

Gary Pearce May 5. Talking About Politics.

Saturday’s Jefferson-Jackson Dinner was the biggest ever in North Carolina.

And the most divided.

When the Governor gets booed, you know feelings run high. It’s like those state Republican conventions back in the 1970s when the moderates and the Jessecrats were at war.

Can the split be healed by November? My guess is that it can, but only if Obama is the nominee.

This may be an oversimplification, but Clinton’s supporters – being older and more jaded – probably will be more willing to accept Obama than vice versa.

The Obama people – young people and minorities – will feel betrayed if Obama is denied. Many of them are involved in politics for the first time. They’re young and idealistic. They don’t have the same scar tissue as the Clinton supporters.

Plus, Obama has won the most delegates. Clinton can win only by persuading the superdelegates to overturn that result – or by winning a bloody battle over seating Michigan and Florida.

One thing becomes more likely as this long war goes on: Whoever wins will pick the other as his or her running mate.

Edited on Tue May-06-08 12:26 PM by WillYourVoteBCounted
I always vote on election day, but many people have already voted.

See our election schedule in North Carolina:

Important Election Dates:
2008 Primary Election May 6th
Last day to register to vote: Apr. 11
Absentee Voting: Mar. 17 - Apr. 29
One Stop Absentee Voting: Apr. 17 - May 3

One man came in the polling place and asked the workers if he could
switch parties today.

When told no, he left WITHOUT VOTING.

We have a gubenatorial race (Gov Easley is outgoing) so you'd think the guy would
stay and at least cast his vote for Gov, Lt Gov, Commiss of Labor, Superintendent of Schools,
Judicial Contests.

I guess Operation Chaos isn't organized well enough (I hope)

I also got some calls and emails today on questions and problems,
maybe do a separate post on that in a bit.

33. Clinton, Nixon; Nixon, Clinton: The Crooks Are At It Again
Monday, May 5, 2008
Clinton, Nixon; Nixon, Clinton: The Crooks Are At It Again

Economist.com
New York

SIX days ahead of the North Carolina primary comes a story of real sleaze—not Jeremiah Wright-style buffoonery, but Nixon-style illegality designed to dupe and disenfranchise voters—that should surprise precisely nobody who has been following and covering this campaign. A group called Women's Voices Women's Vote (WVWV), which claims to have been "created to activate unmarried Americans in their government and in our democracy" has been placing robocalls to voters across North Carolina that seem designed to fool them into thinking they have not yet registered to vote. Many of the voters who received those calls are black. Voters in 11 states have complained about similarly deceptive calls and mailings that have been traced back to WVWV this primary season.

Guess which Democratic candidate WVWV's founder and president, Page Gardner, has donated $6,700 to (hint: it's not Barack Obama). Guess whose election campaign Joe Goode, WVWV's executive director, worked for (hint: it was in 1992, and it was a winning campaign). Guess whose chief of staff sits on WVWV's board of directors (hint: it was the president who served between two Bushes). And guess whose campaign manager was a member of WVWV's leadership team (hint: it's Hillary Clinton).

It's an odd story: a recording of someone named Lamont Williams calls voters to tell them a voter-registration packet is on its way. It's unclear whether anything arrives; what isn't unclear is that the call is well after the registration deadline. It's not too hard to imagine this call coming to an unsophisticated voter (and let me make this clear: I am in no way saying black voters, who seem to have received the lion's share of the calls, are all unsophisticated; I'm simply positing a scenario), and that voter becoming confused. Perhaps he thinks he's not registered, and calls his state's board of elections who tells him it's too late so he stays home on election day. Perhaps the board of elections doesn't know what he's talking about, and he gets frustrated and stays home, assuming he's unregistered.

If this were a one-time event, I might be less suspicious, but it's happened in state after state, always after the registration deadline has passed, and always shortly before the primary. This is an organisation stuffed with Washington insiders; incompetence like this simply doesn't happen over and over again, not in the same way like this. Something stinks.

STEPHANIE TUBBS JONES JUST LOVES HERSELF SOME "MISS HILLARY"

http://bp1.blogger.com/_3IycwU-oXnQ/SB_gUwBB0dI/AAAAAAAAAOk/6NPvAlTFFp0/s400/stephanie+and+hillary.jpg

Here's hoping Stephanie's constituents in Cleveland, Ohio who voted for Barack Obama make her pay when she comes up for re-election. She said on MSNBC today that she is honored to work in Hillary's campaign. She is an embarrassment to black womanhood in America.
Is grinnin' and skinnin' on behalf of her "Miss Hillary" all she can do with her life?

Folks, it's time for the take-down. A friend said she is organizing a campaign to get her out of office for crimes against the mostly black inner city voters who sent her to the U.S. Congress. Let's see what "Miss Hillary" will do to help her (we know Hillary doesn't give a darn about Stephanie).

Stephanie told the media that her District is diverse (translation: she has a few white constituents too). She had the nerve to say that white men in her District love her. Is she for real? If she believes that, elephants can fly. Delusional? That's for you to decide. We will see what happens in her District when Barack Obama gets the nomination. Will her diverse constituency including the white men who love her offer enough support in her inner city District to send her back to Washington for another term?

Payback can be lethal. No more "Delta Days" in which she shows off her "Miss Hillary" around the Capitol. Some Delta Sigma Theta Sorors want to bring her up on charges for using our beloved DST to advance "Miss Hillary's" campaign among black women nationally. Sorors, I will be right there to join in the action and from the mail I am getting, others of you across the country will be there too. If there is one thing black women don't tolerate, it is being used to advance a bigoted, lethal white woman's agenda.

What does this phrase really mean?

"You can trust her" can only be spoken about someone that someone else doesn't trust.

This was posted to a forum at the Greensboro News and Record. I did report it to
1-866-OUR-VOTE.

Holden said:

I took some members of my Mom's Sunday School class to their polling place in southern Alamance County (Eli Whitney Recreational Center) - some problems or confusion there concerning two older black women who appeared to be voting for the first time. They claimed they had registered as "unaffiliated" but apparently were given ballots for "independents" which did not allow them to vote for Obama. When they complained, they were told nothing could be done since they had already voted. These two women appeared confused and disappointed.

Robert L. Borosage: Carolina On My Mind

If Hillary loses North Carolina tonight, it's over. Any superdelegate who is sentient and truly not committed should bring this thing to an end, by endorsing Obama as quickly as possible.

39. Reporting Voting Problems in North Carolina:
The fix is in already!!
Submitted by Jim Sheaves on Tue, 05/06/2008 - 8:55am. election irregularities vote rigging
I was just contacted by a good friend in Granville County about what is turning into, at best a problem, but most likely IMO, a concerted effort to supress Democrats from voting in Granville County. From her message:

They opened the doors at 6:30 and we were 4th and 5th in line at the A-H table. There was a problem with the first guy in line. They got him out of line and I don't know where he went. I think they got him a provisional ballot. The next lady's name was on the list and she voted.

However, they couldn't find person #3's name in the book either. She was upset because she has been a registered voter in Granville County for many years. Next-my turn. My name is not there. Neither is ******* nor *******. WTF? I also told the lady that I have been registered to vote in Granville County for 14 years AND have voted in every election. I know this because I looked it up when you gave me the sample ballot webpage! WTF?

They gave me a provisional ballot but I didn't have time to vote with it because all the booths were full and I had to get to work!! But, as I'm leaving, I hear the lady at the A-H book tell the man running the precinct that the book might as well be thrown out because out of 15 people, only 3 have had their names listed.

OK. I am seething and I want an explanation!!! WTF is up here? I don't know what to do or who to call. I did notice the book with the names in it was more than half the size it was the last time I voted - and very strange since the lower half of Granville County has grown expeonentially since 2004. I know of about 600 new homes within 5 miles of my house. Something stinks!

I warned of this and sent out press releases before early voting and the message
just didn't reach every day people.

42. Primary Day Ritual
Primary Day Ritual
06 May 2008 04:48 pm Andrew Sullivan

An hilariously dead-on account by Al Giordano. And yes, it has already begun:

The day begins with the Clinton campaign “leaking” something to the Drudge Report to set expectations for the day. That then gets repeated on political blogs and cable news, where Clinton surrogate Terry McAuliffe elaborates. Today’s “expectation”: That the Clinton campaign expects a “15 point” defeat in North Carolina. Clinton’s yapping puppies in the news media repeat the manufactured expectation all day long, in which the bar is supposedly now that if Clinton comes within 15 points in that state that she has somehow “won” with a 14 point (or 6 point) defeat.
You know the rest ... God I hate the Clintons. More goal-post moving here.

43. another NC Superdelegate endorses Obama: Jeanette Council
Council backs Obama
Submitted by ryanteaguebeckwith on May 6, 2008 - 6:30pm.

Jeanette Council has endorsed Barack Obama.

The Cumberland County commissioner, who is a Democratic Party superdelegate, told the Fayetteville Observer that she was backing Obama.

"I would have no problem voting for either of the two," she said. "But of the two, I think Barack Obama is the better candidate."

Earlier, she told the newspaper that she was not sure if she would make a decision before Election Day

The announcement brings Obama's North Carolina superdelegate count to seven. Rival Hillary Clinton has two.

44. Obama-Supporter Daschle: Taking It To Rules Committee Would Be "Extralegal"
Obama-Supporter Daschle: Taking It To Rules Committee Would Be "Extralegal"
By Greg Sargent - May 6, 2008, 7:10PM

An odd moment on MSNBC just now: Tom Daschle, a major Obama supporter, seemed to suggest that it would be "extra-legal" if the Hillary campaign takes the dispute over the Florida and Michigan delegations to the DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee.

Asked about that scenario, Daschle said:

"If we have the majority of delegates, and we've got a nominee, all this becomes sort of a moot point. I can't imagine that they would actually consider something that dramatic, something that extra-legal, at a time when we really ought to be talking about uniting the party."
Extra-legal? According to Dictionary.com, that words means "not regulated or sanctioned by law."

Whatever you think of any plans to go to the Rules and Bylaws committee, It's not clear that there would be anything "extra-legal" about it at all, at least according to this rundown on how that committee works.

46. Pro-McCain GOPers backing Clinton in open Democratic primaries
Tue May 6, 3:17 PM | Permalink / Comments
Pro-McCain GOPers backing Clinton in open Democratic primaries

Since John McCain wrapped up the Republican nomination, it's become clear that a small but significant number of pro-McCain Republicans have begun participating in the Democratic primary and are voting for Hillary Clinton.

It's a trend that will have an impact on the results tonight in Indiana, though at this point we don't know how big. It's also not clear whether these Republicans are engaged in Operation Chaos-style "strategic voting" or if they are expressing their preference for second place.

Comparing the numbers from before McCain effectively secured the GOP nomination to after, it appears that since March, up to 3% of all voters in open Democratic primaries are Republicans supporting Clinton with no intention of actually voting for her in the general.

Listen up, undeclared superdelegates!

He's got 1.5 million individual contributors...and we're still in the primary.
He has endured an assault from the GOP, his Democratic opponent, and the MSM -- and he is still winning the nomination battled.
He's locked up the democratically selected pledged delegate victory (even if you include Mich. and Fla.)
The only way his opponent can win is if 80% of choose to overturn the vote.
He's working to unite the Democratic Party to take on John McCain.
He is expanding the electoral map.
He respects the American people enough to tell the truth.
He is the future.
Now, superdelegates, we need you to make a decision -- for the good of the party and for the good of your country.

Superdelegates, your time is now.

You gotta be kidding me.

Mary Bunger, a 44-year-old single mom from Abington, emerged from the town’s general store on Wednesday, the only place to purchase a snack in a 10-mile radius.

“I am definitely going to try to go with Hillary,” she said. “I almost feel like (Obama’s) the anti-Christ from the Middle East.”

Bunger reads news online about the election and has been “trying to talk everybody into voting, especially this year because I’m really scared for Obama to get it.”

Harry Reid: Clinton's Iran Comment Is "Not The American Way"

May 6, 2008 06:26 PM

TOM ASHBROOK: A surge in diplomacy, you say. Senator Clinton recently used the word "obliterate" in regard to Iran. That it might be obliterated if it moved against Israel. Is that a helpful kind of word? Senator Obama said not.

HARRY REID: Well, I am certainly doing my best not to take sides in this presidential thing. But I think that flexing our muscles, threatening people, threatening countries, is not the American way. We have -- as President Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt said, "speak softly, carry a big stick." Words to that effect. And that's what I think we should do. Speak softly, make sure that people know that we can react if we have to, but let's not go around threatening people.
