Indiana Pollster: Lake County Looms
http://tinyurl.com/58je7rMatt Phillips reports on the presidential race from Indianapolis.
As the counting continues in Indiana’s Democratic primary, Andy Downs, director of the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics, urges those tracking the results to keep a close eye on Lake County in the northwest corner of the state.
With its large African-American population and its proximity to Sen. Barack Obama’s home media market in Chicago, Lake County has long been expected to be center of strength for the Illinois senator. As of 10:09 p.m. EDT, the Associated Press was pegging the Indiana contest at 52% to 48% in favor of Sen. Hillary Clinton.
But Lake County’s vote tallies have yet to come in. While there are significant amount of votes there, they might not be enough to push Obama ahead, but “it certainly could close the gap significantly,” Downs said.Interestingly, Downs said that if Clinton takes the state by just a sliver, it could be another instance of a near-even split of delegates. Because of Democratic delegate allotment rules — which reward loyal democratic strongholds — it’s conceivable that Obama could emerge with a slight edge in delegates. “It’s not outside the realm of possibility. I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but it’s a possibility,” Downs said.
