Gallup: Obama polling well with Jewish voters

http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/05/obama_winning_over_jewish_vote.html

Here's an interesting finding from Gallup's pollsters -- almost as many Jewish voters say they would vote for Sen. Barack Obama for president against Sen. John McCain, the all-but-official Republican presidential nominee, as say they would vote for Sen. Hillary Clinton against McCain.

According to Gallup, 61 percent of Jewish voters surveyed said they'd vote for Obama in the general election versus 32 percent who say they'd vote for McCain.

That compares with 66 percent of Jewish voters who said they'd vote for Clinton to the 27 percent who said they'd vote for McCain

Gallup suggested the poll indicated that Obama hasn't been noticeably hurt by his past relationship with his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., who has spoken positively of Minister Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam and has rebuked Israel for the plight of Palestinians.

3. In Massachusetts, He Carried Newton & Brookline
Probably the two cities with the highest concentration of Jewish voters.

4. Encouraging, but Kerry got 74% of the Jewish vote
Although I think defections to McCain among Jews are inevitable either way. Neither Clinton nor Obama is polling at 74%

6. These are the numbers during the primaries - once we have our nominee - numbers generally start to
rise...

13. McCain is seen as more moderate, and younger Jews are not as knee-jerk Democratic
Jews tend to be more upper-income but vote Democratic because of historical tradition, as well as an aversion to the Christian Right and a commitment to social justice. But younger Jews tend not to be as automatically Democratic as their parents, so as older Jews die off the Jewish population may become less Democratic. Also, the Orthodox Jews have become more Republican, and McCain is not seen as being in bed with the Christian Right and is perceived as more moderate.

Jews for whom support for Israel is a litmus test tend not to trust politicians they don't know that well, and there may be a tendency not to trust African American politicians, since some of the most vocal critics of Israel in Congress are members of the CBC. It's not fair, but it's the reality. I think about the people I went to high school with and I am sure some of them will vote for Obama, but I am not sure all the people who usually tilt Democrat will. But I'd love to be wrong on this. I just think it needs to be on our radar screen.

He's certainly got the votes of everyone in my family (except my crazy libertarian aunt in California).

9. There are a few antisemites who should also see this
I'm sure it will rise to 75% by November. Jews vote Dem almost as consistently as AAs.

16. I recall one poster
talking about the 'traditional' antisemitism of the black clergy and how that will tank the Jewish vote for Obama. :eyes:

Jewish vote has always gone with Democrats

15. Another proud Jew for Obama right here
Although I should caution that we may have a bit of an uphill battle to bring over that additional 13% to match Kerry's share...I met some Jews in Montgomery County, PA when canvassing for Obama who were pretty hostile and said that they were Democrats but might/would vote for McCain if Obama is the nominee.

17. I hear you. No group can be painted with one brush, but I few confident
most of the Jewish vote will go with Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee

What I think will be interesting is that the Catholic vote. I think mccain's endorsement of hagee is going to hurt him with the Catholics far worse than the Wright issue hurt Obama. For one reason, Obama essentially severed any ties to Wright's views, and his last response he severed his relationship with Wright

I don't think mccain will do that with Hagee

10. Jew for Obama checking in.
My mothers, sisters, brother-in-laws, nephew all voted for Hillary, but will vote for Obama in a heartbeat against the crazy Republican geezer.

Not feeling bitter today!

14. It will be significantly higher than that
Jewish voters are among the most reliable voting blocs for democrats. I'd be shocked if it's not at least 70-30.
