An Open Letter to Superdelegates
Edited on Wed May-07-08 12:23 PM by nomorewhopper
Dear Superdelegates,

The time to act is now. You have exercised great restraint and judgment by not casting allegiances too soon. You have allowed time for the people's votes to be counted. You have heard the arguments of both candidates, and have weighed them accordingly.

You have been entrusted with a great responsibility: to act as a party elder and aid the party in times like these. The time to act is now.

Barack Obama is our nominee. The people know this, the press knows this, and YOU know this. However, Barack, or any candidate, must ultimately be crowned by the Superdelegates. We must not wait an additional six primaries, which will further divide our party and weaken our candidate. We must heal and unite the party in preparation for a grueling campaign against John McCain. You have the power to heal and unite us. The time to act is now.

Hillary Clinton has run a spirited campaign, and might very well make an excellent candidate. After last night, however, she lacks any reasonable chance to become our nominee.

Barack Obama has weathered a brutal storm of negative publicity, and yet has proven to be quite resilient. We must not waste further energy destroying him, and should begin to hone and sharpen our attacks against the Republicans.

At this point, the people and the party need you to do what you have to do. The clock is ticking, November is coming soon, and the people need to unite around the nominee. This will only happen after you pledge your support to Obama, not one day sooner. Today is that day.

The time to act is now.

Signed,

A Democrat

Edited: I personally know that Superdelegates are reading these forums. If you agree with me, please kick this post to help get this letter in front of them. Thanks!

The Too-Long Goodbye

After the Tuesday primaries, Hillary Rodham Clinton now has maybe a 2 percent chance of winning the Democratic nomination. But if she pursues her losing battle, she has perhaps a 20 percent chance of costing the Democrats the presidency in the fall.

The most terrifying numbers for Democrats in Tuesday’s exit polls should be those showing how many of Mrs. Clinton’s supporters are planning to vote for Mr. McCain in November.

Suppose that 80 percent of people who voted for Mrs. Clinton in the primaries end up supporting Mr. Obama in November, but that 20 percent stay home or vote Republican. That 20 percent would amount to far more popular votes than Ralph Nader won in 2000.

That would be partly the fault of the uncommitted superdelegates. Their fence-sitting is dragging out the contest and undermining their party’s chances in the fall.

So Mrs. Clinton’s frustration is understandable. But if it leads to the election of a president whose views and values are antithetical to everything her career has stood for, that would be inexcusable.
