Florida's Alcee Hastings to Obama: shall I "kiss your ring now or when you come to Florida"
Edited on Fri May-09-08 02:38 PM by madfloridian
Yes, Alcee Hastings really said that. He is a Clinton surrogate, and I believe a campaign co-chair of the state along with Debbie Wasserman Schultz. He and Bill Nelson filed a lawsuit against the DNC last year.

The lawsuit was dismissed and they decided not to refile Nelson v Dean.

Three guesses how Hasting meant the comment, cause I surely don't know. I would like to think it wasn't snarky.

Obama Is Gaining Strength In Florida

Alcee Hastings

In a stark demonstration of the political shift, U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar, a Clinton supporter, asked Obama if he wanted him "to kiss your ring now or when you come to Florida," according to a Hastings' aide.

Obama said there was no need to hurry.

More from the article today.

As Hillary Clinton pins her last, best hopes for reviving her campaign on the still uncounted Florida and Michigan primaries, the momentum in the Democratic presidential contest is rapidly shifting to Barack Obama even in a state where Clinton carried 50 percent of the vote.

"If I had to put this in a sports analogy, it's the seventh inning of the ballgame and the score is 8-to-2. Obama has got a huge lead," said state Sen. Steve Geller, D-Cooper City, one of Florida's uncommitted superdelegates. "But it doesn't mean the game is over yet. Stranger things have occurred."

In another setback for Clinton, state Rep. Dan Gelber, D-Miami Beach, another superdelegate, threw his support to Obama this week, saying Clinton will not be able to overtake Obama.

"I think Sen. Clinton is not going to be able to prevail with pledged delegates and frankly I think Obama would be a terrific candidate," Gelber said. "I like them both. I think he has shown the kind of not only resiliency but political courage that I have hoped for in our nominee."

Quite a turn around, quite an admission from Steve Geller, who "threatened mutually assured destruction" not long ago.

64. 04 theft. Voter Suppression, Intimidation, Disenfrachisement in 04 & 08. If FL Democratic
party really stood for anything they should start with a grass roots movement to seriously deal with voting rights and procedures in their state instead of the quick fix that ignores the real problems. (lets not forget purging voters roles, motor voter scandal and the documented police intimidation checkpoints in black rural areas) They have failed the people.

13. LOL Better Analogy
Edited on Fri May-09-08 02:45 PM by Jake3463
"If I had to put this in a sports analogy, it's the seventh inning of the ballgame and the score is 8-to-2. Obama has got a huge lead," said state Sen. Steve Geller, D-Cooper City, one of Florida's uncommitted superdelegates. "But it doesn't mean the game is over yet. Stranger things have occurred."

It's the last minute of a football game and your down by 3 touchdowns...and Kyle Boller is your quarterback is the more apt analogy.

Reggie White, Brian Dawkins, and Laurence Taylor are on the other team playing defense BTW.

14. "I was teasing..."
“I was teasing, as everyone was. I said, ‘Do you want me to kiss the ring now, or when you come to Florida,’” Hastings said. “He said, ‘Take your time.’ I said, ‘I will take my time, because you do need to come to Florida,’” Hastings related later. "I didn't get to say what I wanted to say, which is that he could just say right now, ‘Seat the Florida delegation.’”

53. The problem is, they don't want to end the divisiveness, because they
have Howard Dean, Donna Brazille, and the DNC in their sights. And they are determined to delegitimize Obama's presumptive nomination. They have decided to make this about the DNC & if it makes Dean look bad to boot, so much the better. Why aren't they placing the blame where it belongs....on their own flawed legislature? Responsible people know that there are consequences for not following the rules, and Alcee Hastings, as a former judge, would know that.

Why should Florida be rewarded for not playing by the rules?

23. Hastings: "It's all done in jest, but it's serious as cancer"
"“Obama made a surprise visit yesterday to the floor of the House of Representatives, where he was welcomed like a rock star and greeted with calls of ‘Mr. President,’” The New York Post writes. “Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), who has also pledged his loyalty to Clinton, gave Obama a bear hug. Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.), a Clintonite who was in the mob of lawmakers who gathered around Obama, said most of the chatter was in the form of jokes - sort of. ‘It's all done in jest, but it's serious as cancer,’ Hastings said, quoting Obama as saying, ‘Now you can vote for me’ to a Clinton backer."

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/05/09/999545.aspx

Guess it was a joking way of coming around. It is going to be hard to do that here unless some like Wasserman Schultz just stay off TV.

It has been a long hard slog here in Florida. Going to be hard to come together.

Who shouldn't print such moments of deconstructed reality for a public that wants to believe the show is real.

Sorry, MF, but it's pretty obvious to me that Hastings was simply acknowledging he'd been pwned, as well indicating his awareness that at some point in the future he was going to have to make that public show of it.

And I'm really, really sick & f-in tired of people claiming Hillary ran a path of destruction while Obama and his people poop apple butter.

Obama has never stooped to her level. The last week she and her surrogates have been unbearable.

Hastings probably was kidding, but he was not kidding when he stood with Hillary to claim victory in Florida. He was not kidding when he sued the party.

Fine, if they were joking. I have no gripe with joking.

It is time for them to stop the divisiveness about Florida, and maybe he is trying.

Trouble is, today Hillary is starting it up again. Just read an article.
