WOW my FIRST THREAD......OK Here goes.........one year from now........let's fantasize!
One year from today, or the next year's Mother's Day, whichever you want.........

We have elected: Barack Obama.............or John McSame?,

I choose to fantasize about Obama........leave the MsSame fantasies to the Hillary supporters...or Republicans, I won't go there yet.

What do you see? I see a lot in the first 4.5 months of his Presidency........but I'd like to hear from both Hillary supporters and Obama supporters, how have we changed this nation with Obama as our President in just 4.5 months?

Some reasonable assumptions if Obama is elected?

I'll leave it all up to you to make your own assumptions.

1. Congratulations on your first post...
...Obama, yes!

...McCain, no!

Obama's first mother's day as president:

As a mother: working our way to better healthcare - troop withdrawal - diplomacy.

People talking to each other and treating each other like human beings - my fantasy!

34. Don't shut up. We get snarky for fun around here.
Especially if we can't find a cat to kick.

I really think Obama will try to change a lot of things for the better. He'll face some major opposition from the repukes and some of our more bought out DLCers.

I'm at least willing to give him the chance to try. We need someone with vision, not more of the same.

a discussion of what Society OWES each and every American that is born, regardless of their economic status, by virtue of the intrinsic value of Human Life and our agreed upon objective to make Abortion as rare as possible. Because it is widely recognized that women would not have Abortions if we didn't live in a dog-eat-dog culture.

Please don't laugh.

17. It is the logical extension of the whole so called "Pro-Life" discussion.
IF life is soooooo precious, you provide for it, not without SOME regard for $$$$$, but money should NOT be the primary criteria for assessing our responsibilities for one another.

We need a New AMERICAN social contract that is not based on money, especially since we've just recently learned and have some even harder lessons in our near future, that the value of money is arbitrary. Therefore, money should NOT be the sole criteria for what we as a "nation" do.

27. It's actually a conservative notion. In order to conserve human and financial resources,
you invest in People up front, Housing, Health Care, and Education, with appropriate alternatives.

Some of this stuff is on the horizon. Here's a group who is associated with someone I know in the Long-Term Care professions: http://www.ncbcapitalimpact.org/default.aspx?id=146

33. thanks for the link...
...I've saved it and am going to check it out later (I'm tired) but the idea of taking care of those less fortunate by reason of their physical condition is going to be a huge challenge in the future.

It's not just the elderly. Children with disabilities grow up and are still disabled. It's scary for their parents (I know, I'm one of them) to figure out what happens when they grow up and are not independent.

Thanks again for the link.

36. The model in the link is for Elder Care, but it could be adapted by anyone
wishing to make the investments in one another.

It's also called Co-housing and if you google that term you will discover there has been a Co-housing movement in this country for a few decades. We actually have a very successful co-housing project near here.

One of the things I like about the Greenhouse Project is how it elevates the role of the Care Givers (known as CNAs in today's long-term care homes). The ideal would be home to residents and resident-workers and ALL would earn equity in the real estate (like co-housing does).

And last of all, restoration of America's good name in the world.

Although that won't take a short time.

Let's make sure we don't deny any American's rights.

Let's make sure we expedite trials, investigate all the criminals that profited from Iraq, put them all in jail for 20-40 years!

Let's do it all according to the Constitution!

Expect NO "honeymoon" period at all.

The "librul media" will dissect every verbalization, minor misstep and hiccup. Some Repubs will even fondly reminisce about McCain and "what could have been".

In the meantime, his favorable polls will continue to rise. Funny what a capable, caring President can do.

And welcome to DU! Awesome first post!

13. Welcome to DU!!! It's a good thing to try and visualize what you'd like to see happen.
Sometimes you hit one outta the ballpark!

Imagine there's Obama...

Mainly, it might just adjust, and improve, the general mindset of Americans. We'll wake up the next morning realizing we now live in a country in which the great curse, slavery, has FINALLY been overcome in a serious, tangible, and really rather earth-shaking way. A history-making way! We will now live in a country that's opened its collective eyes and hearts, and set aside some of its more, well, uncomfortable feelings, and grown up a little, and moved beyond it. After the way we know we're viewed as a country (in our own heart of broken hearts, as well as by observers elsewhere around the world), this would be a real relief and a VAST improvement. Everyone would stand a little taller that next day. We will have made history and pushed our country forward on that day.

That's my prediction. And we go, from there, about the people's business - fixing everything the bastards who just moved out broke or ruined, replacing what they stole, rebuilding what they trashed, resurrected what they buried and otherwise ignored. It'll be a great new point of departure to begin implementing some real reforms.

There will be the REAL "sore losermen", the nay-sayers, the self-centered infants, and those who won't like being told that their turn at the trough is over and it's time to move over and let somebody else eat, too.

some younger liberal thinkers on the court would be lovely, as would the beginning of the end of this damned illegal occupation.
It will not be a cake walk, I know he'll be doing some compromising that will annoy me, but I do have faith in the future President Obama!

Edit to add: I'd also like to see Gitmo closed and the restoration of habeas corpus!
There's tons of stuff that needs to be done and reversed.

It's NOT going to be NICE with Obama, $6 a gallon gas, criminal trials of profiteers, all the negative stuff.

37. 1st Welcome to DU - My assumption would be the world is as glad as we are!
1. There have been talks started with all the Middle Eastern countries to help end the Iraq War.

2. The United States is drafting an insurance plan to cover everyone in the United States who needs health insurance and CSPAN is going to air progressive talks on this every Sunday evening.

3. The U.S. Military has started talks on how to make our Military stronger without making the private military groups like Blackwater and Halliburton richer!

4. The Military and our new Secretary of Defense, Sen. Joseph Biden, are working for the elimination of the Afghanistan Taliban.

5. Local, State, and Federal Governments are working together to bring an end the mortgage crisis with banking authorities.

And that is just for starters!

41. I can feel it in my bones, there is a lot percolating that will come out after Obama wins
I believe and trust that he will not impede any investigations into the misdeeds of the current crooks and liars in office. I even pray he will instigate it himself.

I believe and trust that he will do his damndest to make good on his campaign promises and augment them
with new ideas and additional programs he has not yet dared to mention, lest he alienate potential voters, I suspect seriously that aspects of his courage, personality and vision will be revealed that we have not been privvy to see yet, and that they are good and needed.

I believe and trust that he will withstand the brutality of what will come from the media and the hopefully decimated Repuglican Party. If what happened to the Clintons right after election will repeat, then we are in for worse this time.

I believe and trust that not since Jimmy C have we seen integrity, and honesty to the degree that he will exhibit.

And I hope I am not dreaming.

45. Well, barring a Neo-con coup, Obama will likely bring a bloodbath to Republicans
I Imagine that after the cabinet announcements, he'll go straightaway to the friendly nations that Bush has pissed off and begin shoring up ties.

After that, I'm hoping he'll start with demanding a balanced budget which will immediately begin strengthening the dollar and helping with energy costs.

Then on to Iraq withdrawal, oil independence, health care, and the environment. In the State of the Union, he'll outline the initiatives, and with the majoritties in the House and Senate, he'll have a shot at making some serious headway.

I think that with the exception of a balanced budget and differences in the Iraq approach, Clinton would do much the same thing.

46. First I want to see the spaying and neutering of the republican party in the fall elections
I want to see the anti-american fascist neocons driven into minority status for at least the next 25 years. It will take that long to repair some of the massive damage they have done to the middle-class and poor in this country.

Isn't it a crime to tamper with elections? What about Rush Limbaugh's Operation Chaos? I'd like to see that fat mealy-mouthed bastard dragged up before a Congressional committee or two.

The Fairness doctrine, anyone? I also believe that these mega media conglomerates need to be broken up. A person should not be allowed to own a newspaper, a TV station and a radio station in the same city.

Kill the Bush tax cuts for the rich. Kill the tax breaks for the oil companies and take that money and plow it into research and development of alternate forms of energy.

Get America off the oil tit ASAP. We all need electric cars NOW! I saw a story in the news of two brothers who added a battery pack to their Prius's and now they get 100MPG.

Why the hell cant I go out and buy one tomorrow??

Get out of Iraq yesterday! Close all unnecessary military bases across the globe. Hold talks with our enemies. It may accomplish nothing or maybe we can achieve breakthroughs. We'll never know until we try and the rest of the world might just respect us again.

We need tax breaks for those companies that create jobs in america and tax liabilities for those who export jobs.

No more NAFTA, GATT treaties without strict protections for labor unions and workers in the treaty countries. Humane working conditions and a living wage will be enforced.

Thats just a few things off the top of my head.

I'm a USAF veteran, I love my country but the rethugs have damn near destroyed all the good things in it. I want to be proud to be an american again. I want a President that I am proud of, a President that builds up all americans and inspires us to greatness again.

I believe that Senator Obama is that man.
