BOB BARR TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT AS A LIBERTARIAN

WASHINGTON -- Bob Barr, a former congressman from Georgia and a former Republican, today announced his candidacy for president as a Libertarian who would rein in federal spending and foreign wars.

"The government has run amok fiscally," he said at a press conference. Saying that during the first quarter of this year the private sector was losing millions of jobs while the federal government was "hiring with enthusiasm," Barr added, "As the American people see their standard of living falling, the standard of government keeps going up."

Expected to win the nomination of the Libertarian Party when it holds its convention in Denver over the Memorial Day weekend, Barr, 59, criticized Republican John McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee, for not being a true conservative.

"There's not a great deal of substance there in terms of a commitment to cutting the size of government," Barr said He said no one who had authored the McCain-Feingold campaign reforms that cap individual donations could call himself a conservative, "at least with a straight face."

24. Actually you might want to reevaluate....
Barr has been working alot with the ACLU.

You may not like his 2nd amendment stand and other things but yours is not a valid comparison.

I should donate to him and Ron Paul...

Any dilution of the republican vote means a victory to the Rats... Remember Ross Perot????

I’m know McCain fan but I’ll hold my nose and pull the lever

--

If Barr gets the nomination there will be one conservative in the race.

--

I think I’ll take the morning off to start practicing saying the words, “President Obama.”

--

> I remember when the GOP picked McCain, the Libertarian party sent the GOP a funeral wreath. How fitting.....

I love it! Do you have a pointer to the story? I so want this to be true.
--

“And Obama’s got the White House”

If you think the liberal McCain can beat the liberal Obama your delusional...
--

You gotta' love it. They have their own Nader. Poor fellas'. :P

10. I think this is his way of thanking Obama...

...for beating Hillary.

He really has a thing about the Clintons. Per Wikipedia:

"Barr is best known for his role as one of the House managers during the Clinton impeachment trial. It was Barr who first introduced a resolution directing Judiciary Committee to inquire into impeachment proceedings -- months before the Monica Lewinsky scandal came to light."

Let's face it: Barr is much better at being a republican than McCain. He's so much more what they want for a candidate. I support his candidacy so much that I'm tempted to slap a bunch of his candidacy bumper stickers on other peoples' cars.

Finally, the republicans have hope that someone with the guts to support their core values is in a run for the White House. This is what they've been waiting for.

Senator Obama, I hope you plan to send him a bottle of wine, along with all your best wishes. Also, I suggest a few lines in your campaign speech, such as "A vote for Senator McCain is a vote for a 3rd Bush term -- but a vote for Bob Barr is a vote for God, and a free ticket to Heaven after you die."

Three cheers for the semi-united republican party for having the guts to battle themselves.

15. In case that wasn't sarcasm...
...rooting for a third party to enter the race (not win, just please please enter) who will undermine the republican base of support and hand the election to Obama, is rooting for Obama.

If that was sarcasm which fell victim to the nuance destroying properties of the interwebs, then nevermind. ;)

I've always hated Bob Barr.

but he, as a libertarian, is beginning to grow on me. He could be McCain's Nader.

22. Love it!
I'd love to see a serious third-party candidacy that could take some wind out of McCain's sails, and I definitely think this could be it. Especially so if he and Ron Paul run on a joint ticket. Barr still seems to be relatively popular here in Georgia...maybe he could make my state competitive in the GE? :)

I'm glad that he is running, because I think he will take votes from McCain. And if he can be included in any of the debates, he will make McCain lose his temper.

Bob Barr represented the 7th District of Georgia in the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003.

Bob Barr supports a Christian Conservative extremist position. According to the Religious Freedom Coalition, "Upon calling his office we find that all religions except ultra conservative christianity, "..aren't "Real" religions."

Barr has been referred to as "hypocritical," "mean spirited," and a "moral crusader, and an "anti-gay bigot."

He called hate crimes legislation to protect the rights of gays and lesbians, women and disabled Americans "a backdoor way to obtain protected status for sexual orientation and sexual deviancy."

Barr gave a Keynote speech to a gathering of the racist and anti-immigrant Council of Conservative Citizens and has graced them with his message on several occasions. He has taken a hard pro-life stance yet it is reported that he paid for one of his three wives to have an abortion.

In addition to his ties with the Council of Conservative Citizens, he has been supported by the John Birch Society who has paid for his speaking engagements with them.
