6. It's dialect spoken by folks...
who you would just LOVE to meet (I am only just barely kidding - or not).

You'd have to spend some time in W. Virginia.

16. Hoopey is an old slur
not a dialect.
The Scot-Arrish have the dialect honors.

Hoopey is a slur for the Polish-Slovak workers that came to the northern panhandle of the state.
They literally made the metal hoops for wooden barrels.
Italians that immigrated here either were stonecutters, masons or miners.
I guess by now, y'all know all the slurs for them.

I am half Italian, half Slovak Roman Catholic, married to a real mountain man of the Scot-Irish type.

53. Thanks for the explanation
That's a new one for me.

(Kinda like when I heard dago for the first time in school (spoken as a point of pride, of course): In our family, we used Wop and 'Tally (e.g., I was the mule-headed Wop and my brother was the lying sack of 'Tally shit).

Obama sporting flag pin as he campaigns in W. Virginia

WASHINGTON — Barack Obama, who labeled discussion of whether he wears a flag pin in his lapel a false issue in a debate with Hillary Clinton, was wearing one Monday as he campaigned in West Virginia ahead of Tuesday's primary vote there.

Obama made no reference to the pin, which could be clearly seen in television images and through telephoto lenses as he spoke in Charleston, W. Va., about veterans issue. There was no public comment from his campaign.

20. Not so much an interest ...
... as a bizarre fascination with the desperation of the Hillary camp. Kinda like watching a pile-up on the highway - you don't want to look, but you just can't help yourself.

So Obama wears a flag-pin or he doesn't - do you think the SDs are going to endorse Hillary as a result, either way? Does she miraculously acquire more delegates if he wears one, or doesn't? Do you believe the sporting of lapel jewelry makes a difference to anyone?

I take that back - you probably actually do.

23. No, not at all.
Just wondering why Obama's wearing of a flag-pin would be worth discussing, or posting here.

You obviously thought this was 'news' worth posting about.

I understand Hillary had asparagus with her lunch last week. Same kind of importance. But I didn't post about it.

29. The Beverly Hillbillies were NOT Hoopey
The Beverly Hillbillies were supposedly from the Tennesee Appalachia area.

Heck, the folks in the mountains of West Virginia are not Hoopey.

Hoopey is generally along the Ohio River low country.

Generalizing Appalachia as one big group is the mistake people have been making for generations. Appalachia is a collection of different cultures and there are several different Applachian cultures in West Virginia alone.
