Change You DESERVE
Edited on Tue May-13-08 08:31 PM by NanceGreggs
There’s only a few things in this world that elected Republicans are good for: war, famine, pestilence and death, an over-abundance of hypocrisy, and the occasional laugh.

“Take our new campaign slogan – please!” It’s a Henny Youngman punchline, sans the punch, but it already has the citizenry rolling in the aisles.

My first thought on hearing it was an obvious one: What marketing genius came up with this crap? (My second thought was that it was probably Mark Penn – but that’s neither here nor there.)

After months of being inundated with Change We Can Believe In from the Obama campaign, the GOP – as creative and insightful as ever – have decided to relaunch their same-old/same-old product with all the imagination of a Pepsi PR executive coming up with Well, It’s Kinda, Sorta the Real Thing! in an attempt to appeal to Coca-Cola consumers.

Of course, there is an underlying, albeit inadvertent, honesty in claiming to offer Change You Deserve – because that’s exactly what the Republicans are offering: what they have determined the average, middle-class American “deserves”. And over the past eight years, we’ve all had a belly-full of the GOP’s idea of our just desserts.

One can only ponder what changes would or could be made that wouldn’t simply be an undoing of the disasters a Republican administration, aided and abetted by their party colleagues, has created to begin with. Perhaps by change they simply mean a lessening of the damage already done, a slight pulling-back from the precipice we, as a nation, are about to fall off of, thanks to their incompetence, self-service, and out-and-out greed.

I suspect the “change” they think the peasantry deserves is a slight restoration of the Constitution and the rule of law – perhaps a promise to suspend illegal wiretapping activities on statutory holidays, or maybe a public finger-wagging and a half-hearted shame, shame directed at our country’s torturers before they go about their business of waterboarding the next victim.

And no doubt the Change We Deserve will have its impact on the economy. I can foresee (after lengthy negotiations with the oil conglomerates at the next Republican-Exxon sleepover) a one-cent per-gallon price reduction at the pump, or (dare I imagine it!) raising our next “stimulus check” by fifty cents per family member.

Surely the biggest largesse that would flow from that promised Change We Deserve would be a reassessment of our occupation of Iraq: no, we still won’t leave, we won’t see a cohesive plan to end the violence, and we certainly won’t see a reduction in troop deaths. But once sworn-in, President John McCain will cut back on his golfing even moreso than his predecessor did – and you can take that kind of change to the bank, although there will be a hefty service charge for extracting those pennies from their paper wrappers.

Surely the Republicans, had they put their minds to it – assuming they had any – would have come up with a more apt slogan to launch what is already doomed to be a crushing defeat in November, like "We’re Really, Really, Really Sorry", "Contrary to Popular Belief, We’re Actually NOT With Stupid", or, more appropriately, the oft-used fallback position of the battering husband, "Gimme Another Chance, Babe, and I Promise Things Will Change!”

The great irony of the Republican wannabes running on a Change You Deserve platform is blatantly apparent to everyone (except, of course, the idiots promoting it). Had the GOP not mired the nation in an unwinnable war, an economy that sucks like an Eletrolux, and a standing among the world’s nations that makes the Third Reich seem almost respectable by comparison, the citizenry wouldn’t be clamoring for change in the first place.

Well, let me end with a prediction: After four years of a Democrat in the White House, and a Democratic majority in the House and Senate, the campaign slogan in 2012 will be, "We Promise Not to Change a Thing We’ve Been Doing". It’s a slogan that is bound to ensure yet another electoral victory four years hence, not only for the Democrats, but for the country.

2. My dear Nance!
Wow, sweetie...

I dare any Republican to dispute any of your well-thought-out points!

First of all, they couldn't!

And that would still be the case even if they had the courage to try, which they don't!

I wish you were running for something, anything!

At the national level, of course...

7. Pelosi and Reid promised change in the 2006 election
the Dems won and I don't see much change.

Saying it and doing it are two different things. A community organizer with articulate wording in a speech does not represent change.

29. You do understand how the legislative branch works, right?

We don't have a fail proof majority.

That being said, Reid is a terrible party leader and should force the Reublicans' hand and make them actually fillibuster every time they threaten it. Instead he wimps out and backs down. Pelosi has no right to take impeachment off the table and that is a HUGE mistake.

But how do you put all the blame on Obama? I don't get that stretch at all.

9. Ray Davies from the Kinks
once issued a Christmas greeting which concluded '...and may we all get what we deserve.'

At face value it may have seemed benign, but it was actually a whole lot more sinister than it appeared.

That's what that slogan reminds me of.

13. Brilliant Commentary ! Infused with the spirit of Molly !!
Change You Deserve sounds so awful it almost could be real. The best satire. Is there an oblique S&M reference in the phrase too perhaps? Let me give you what you deserve. And we must surely feel we deserve some pain after letting our elections be stolen again and again. We may deserve Creepy McPain but let's hope for some grace. Liked your linking "Change We Deserve" to the paltry pennies the GOP allows to trickle down. And so much more! Thanks for the great read.

14. Oh my lord, I double checked and the GOP is really using the thing
"The Change You Deserve" is a trademark used by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals to promote Effexor XR. As of today, Republican leaders say, it's also the "mantra" under which they will be unveiling "common sense solutions focused on the issues American families and small businesses care about most."

The GOP rollout comes a week after former House Speaker Newt Gingrich warned fellow Republicans to "chart a bold course of real change" or face catastrophe this fall. House Minority Whip Roy Blunt agrees. "I think Newt is absolutely right in the idea that real change requires real change," the Missouri Republican told Wolf Blitzer Sunday on CNN's Late Edition.

Only, as you imply, more sinister.

"Liked your linking "Change We Deserve" to the paltry pennies the GOP allows to trickle down." Ah... that would be "prostate economics"? Or should it be "constipated" or "mushroom" economics?

15. This slogan is incredible...to any one with at lest two firing
synapses, it states that the years under bush have essentially been a disaster, and the GOP is going to change that! Unbelievable, they've just admitted they have realized what an utter failure the current administration is!

Believing a politician, (especially an R), requires a leap of faith few mortals can accomplish though, and most of us realize change takes a number of things; an idea, a plan, a catalyst and above all time, none of which the GOP possess'.

Change You Deserve is appropriate however...we DO deserve change, and we'll get it when bush, the House and Senate get much better #'s, and above all, we hold the elected "officials" accountable. We are the government, and we better start acting like it. Once we have more control, we need to ensure Congress does our will, the "changes" candidates are talking about should benefit the people, not the congresscritters and their cronies.

All those people who get tased deserve it.

All those people who get arrested deserve it.

"Change you deserve" means bad things if the Republicans are doing to the interpretation of "deserve."

20. What Repubes need to change
is their line of shit.
Democrats are traitors. Democrats hate America. Democrats are Communists. Democrats want the terrorists to win. Liberal is a dirty word yet is derived from the same root as liberty.
Republicans will protect you (9-11 happened on Bush's watch).
Presidential sex lives are more important than starting wars predicated on lies.
Outsourcing jobs is a good thing. Cutting taxes increases revenue. Borrow and embezzle is preferred over tax and spend. It's your money being stolen to fund social programs, but the money lost in Iraq is a minor detail. George Bush and Dick Cheney are tough guy war heroes. Democrats who really did serve in the military were secretly working for the enemy. Only Republicans pay taxes and Democrats steal that tax money. Air pollution is good for you, as is mercury. Clean air and water will take jobs away, and makes America weak. Drilling for oil and cutting taxes cures all ills. It's all the liberal media's fault.
This could go on ad infinitum, but I have other responsibilities.

Edited on Wed May-14-08 01:32 PM by Jackpine Radical
than you might think.

Both Effexor and Republicanism have a large number of unpleasant side effects. Below is a list of identified Effexor side effects followed by their relevance to Republicanism.

* Nausea – Republicans are enough to make you sick to your stomach.
* Headache – They're enough to give you a headache, too.
* Drowsiness, Yawning – You have to be asleep to fall for Republican propaganda.
* Dry mouth –Related to nervousness, anxiety (see below)
* Dizziness – A common condition in those who listen to Republican spin
* Insomnia -- Who can sleep with those maniacs in charge?
* Nervousness, Anxiety –ditto insomnia
* Loss of appetite – See nervousness above
* Body weakness – a sign that the Republican vampires are getting at you
* Sweating – See nervousness
* Constipation – Republicans are full of shit—this is why.
* High blood pressure (hypertension) – They make ya SO angry...
* Ejaculation problems – That's why they keep praying for a Second Cumming?
* Shakiness (tremors) – See nervousness
* Diarrhea – They scare the shit out of you
* Chills – Just the thought of them being in charge...
* Vomiting – Republicans are so hard to stomach...
* Blurred vision – like thinking you see terrorists & WMD everywhere?
* A decreased sex drive (libido)--or maybe just repressed sexuality
* Infections – Republicanism IS an infection
* Flushing, redness in face -- See Bill O'Reilly
* Gas – Explains Bush & fart jokes
* Abnormal dreams – Explains a lot
* Agitation -- (obvious)
* Confusion (obvious)
* Unusual thoughts – like Creationism and denial of global warming?

his running mate the ones who will restore conservative principles to the WH. I've already heard it. That's the change they'll promote.

On the other side, dems have to do a much better job of linking the GOP and McCain with Bush. I look forward to hearing Obama explain the relationship in clear detail.

after you've filled up the gas tank. "This is what you deserve, and if you don't elect us, we'll take THAT away, too!"

Or, right before a beating: "Give 'em what they deserve."

Or, "If they didn't deserve it, it wouldn't have happened."

Jeesus, the sick authoritarian bully always thinks his victims "deserve" the abuse.

"Abuse You Deserve" is the truth behind this slogan.
