a lifelong "Dem" goes to McCain
Edited on Tue May-13-08 10:44 PM by swampg8r
i have a friend of many years
his family was always capital D Dem's running on the dem name for local offices
today he was at another friends house and as usual we began talking politics
he asked who i would vote for thinking i would name hillary and was surprised to find I'm backing obama
he was surprised because normally i run almost conservative(in the GOP i would at best be a moderate)in my choices for national offices
his family is solidly hillary people at his mothers insistence
we discussed the primaries and he admitted that hillary was done and could not win short of a coup at the convention
i told him how glad i was that after over 35 years we would be working on the same candidates campaign for president together(i had been relocated until last february when i returned home)
i was happy

then he told me
if hillary doesn't get the nomination he would be working for McCain in the fall
i about shit my pants
i went over every reason not to give mccain any help and he disavowed each one
i explained that if mccain stayed in we would have 4 years at best of failed policies
he didn't care
i plead to the long family history he had of democratic party activism
and his mothers local but distinguished career stressing those party principals
the only thing that mattered to him as that hillary was the loser
and that a "black "guy was never going to win

i will shame him back by november

edited to remove something i felt was snarky and undeserved given the thoughtful responses im getting from some DUers from both camps

1. Tell your friend and anyone else for McCain that BLOOD WILL BE ON THEIR HANDS !!
McCain = 100 years in Iraq. What is more important, voting on convoluted reasoning against Obama or filling more American body bags in Iraq? Ask your friend that !

2. Im sure there will be some
but a fear of that shouldn't make the process already completed illegitimate to the point where supers should override the will of the electorate.

Good! We don't need an anti-choice NeoCons in the Democratic party.
Tell your friend I said that.

McCain doesn't have a base.....so maybe your friend and his friends that are like minded can start one.

8. change is hard for some people.
I know many Dems that are not comfortable working for a Black man's election. Some Dems in our County party sent out hate e-mails against Obama at the beginning of this primary campaign. Mostly in ignorance. I was angered and ashamed. After Obama's race speech tho, I've started to really contemplate the issue. It doesn't do any good to just write them off and be pi$$ed, because we can reach them. I know we can. When I look at the people in my circle of friends, family and local dems, I am proud of the people that are supporting Obama. They are Hillary's demographic (so say the pundits), but they know who the best candidate is.

10. Lifelong Dems also went over to Nixon and Reagan...
...and the proper response to that is this: fuck 'em. The Democratic party is more progressive today because the old Dixiecrats and Cold War liberals went over to the Republican camp. Anyone who can in good conscience vote for McCain is not someone that we need in the Democratic party.

13. Fine
He deserves the government we will get if he does that.

All these people who won't vote for a Black need to get the hell out of the Democratic Party now. If the Democratic Party has to cater to the likes of bigots and idiots then maybe I don't belong in it either.

WHy should we cater to people who don't care?

18. Know what you mean. I have a hardcore dem with a Big D who
has said that if Hillary doesn't get the nomination he is voting for McCain. Could have knocked me over with a feather. He hates everything about Chucklenuts, realizes that McCain would be more of the last eight years and yet, he is voting for McCain. I can't get him to tell me any reason why he doesn't like Obama other than he just doesn't. It isn't anything silly like a flag pin, Obama's middle name or his preacher. Just doesn't like him. Actually said he was afraid of what this man would do as president. This from a gay man is what makes this so astounding. How he can reconcile himself to somehow think that McCain is better than Obama is mystifying.

I'm voting for Hillary in my primary (and hope she gets the nomination but I live in the real world) but I will be voting the candidate with a D after their name come November. He is a smart, political savvy (he works for state of Maryland), kind, generous person to one and all but so completely, totally wrong.

And worse yet, he isn't the only person I have heard that from. My landlord is a dyed-in-the-wool Baptist Republican who hates all things Democratic (and especially Clinton). He finally (after eight dang years) admits that Dim Son is the worst. Told me last week that he was voting for Hillary.(Jaw still on ground.) Said that he really thought that McCain is insane and can't be trusted. Pains him to do it, hates to think about it but he absolutely does not like anything about Obama or McCain so he is "stuck" with Hillary. (Him, I'm pretty sure is buying on the BS of pins, names and preachers on Faux Snooze.) There is no rational or critical thinking for this guy. I didn't even try.

20. I'm happy that we're ridding the party of some of these people.
Weak kneed corpratists and racists need to go. It's long past due. And the best part about it is they're being replaced with lifelong Democrats. (this is only directed to those that would vote for McCain.)

doing it because of Hillary, he said he didn't believe a black man could win. Why that would lead him to want to support McCain though, I don't understand.
