81% of Clinton voters in WV, "Race is important"
Edited on Wed May-14-08 06:46 AM by goodboy
I just saw an MSNBC exit poll in which 81% of Clinton's voters stated that "race is important" in their decision. (EDIT) -It's 22% of the total, but 81% of those who said it's important, voted for Clinton - happy now?

These are voters vehemently opposed to the Iraq war...

These are voters seriously hurt by gas prices...

But more opposed to the idea of voting for a black man...so they'll forget the pain of the Iraq war to vote for a candidate who helped send us there...

But more opposed to the idea of voting for a black man, so they 'll vote for a Democratic candidate offering the same "relief" as the Repuke Candidate in the form of the "gas tax holiday"

These are the voters that Sen. Clinton says only she can win...I believe that.
Does that mean that in the end these voters would rather have a 3rd Bush term with McCain than pull the lever for a black man?

flame on..

The single most important factor 8 85 10
One of several important factors 14 79 14
Not an important factor 77 59 34

27. You are misreading the poll: its around 80 percent of 22 percent.
Edited on Wed May-14-08 06:42 AM by onenote
This exit poll indicates that 22 percent of all of the voters in the primary said that race was either the most important factor (8 percent) or one of several important factors (14 percent). Of the eight percent who said it was the most important factor, 85% voted for Clinton. Of the 14 percent who said it was one of several important factors, 79% voted for Clinton.

That's not the same as saying 80 percent of Clinton's voters thought race was important. But it is a significant number.

25. I'm surprised they were bold enough to basically confess they won't vote for a person based on race.
TPM has a writeup that Obama does badly not with all whites but with people of Appalachian descent.

Here's a quote from the piece "But they were as anti-slave as they were anti-slavery,"

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/194870.php

Its the first I've heard of this stuff so I really have no idea of his assessment is correct or not.

10. I believe WV is the second whitest state in NA.
I live in the other. I have a 7 year old grandson who said he didn't like black people the other day much to the horror of his family. He has never heard that at any hearth he has visited or lived at. The truth is that we have done him a disservice by not exposing him to the multi-cultural nature of our country. We will soon rectify that.

West Virginia is a beautiful State full of good people. They fear what they don't know.

Edited on Wed May-14-08 06:28 AM by quantass
he is the whitest black man in america by winning the two whitest states in the US: Maine and Vermont

And when you say North America then technically Canada is whiter than America and thank goodness we aren't struggling with racial inequality so severely....that seems so medieval.

16. I live in East TN and I'm sorry and saddened to say
there are people here who would rather see this country become part of Communist China then vote for man who clearly has some genetic material in common with American slaves.

These people go to church, give to the poor and think they are following Jesus. They are the ones who organized the KKK and sang "Amazing Grace" while posing with the dead bodies of lynch victims.

I hope the rest of this country can out vote them.

30. Well...from what I've seen...
Racism is alive and well in WV, and not so hidden as in other places. I was a life-long Ohio resident, and recently moved across the river to Ohio County WV..and I'm sickened by what I'm seeing and hearing.

These people believe he's a muslim.
These people will vote against their own security and economic interests just to make sure a "black muslim" doesn't get to be president.

Racism in a lot of places is just under the surface..

Here, in WV...it's not. Crossing the Mason Dixon line into Marshall county is like going back in time, to another world...with White and Colored water fountains... (not literally) but it feels like that.
These are the remnants of the original white democratic racists.

48. Considering that Marshall County is south of Ohio County and that the Mason-Dixon Line
Edited on Wed May-14-08 09:53 AM by Petrushka
marks Marshall County's--and the northern panhandle's--southernmost boundary, in order for you to be "crossing the Mason Dixon line INTO Marshall county", you'd have to be in Wetzel County and moving in a northerly direction. Right?

When you say, "I'm sickened by what I'm seeing and hearing." in Ohio County, I can't help wondering if you're seeing and hearing only what you FEEL like seeing and hearing . . . especially since you could have mis-heard the results of that poll you saw on MSNBC.

I've never heard of "the original white democratic racists" before. Without knowing who they were, I'm confused about what you mean by their "remnants". True, as you say: "Racism in a lot of places is just under the surface." But, methinks thou doth (**cough**) over-exaggerate too much.

If you're living in Ohio County now, dig a little West Virginia history when you aren't too busy mis-hearing or imagining things. Visit the Customs House on Market Street and 16th. That's where West Virginia's first capitol was located.

Have a nice day!

It is not 81% of Clinton supporters. Only 22% of ALL voters voted that race 'important'. How can 81% of Clinton supporters have voted 'important' and 59% of Clinton supporters have voted 'not-important'.

Your math is off my friend :)

What it should say is:
"Of the 22% of voters that thought race was important, 81% we're Clinton supporters".

21. This is the dirty underbelly of the Democratic Party
Given that liberals represent 20% of voters, the Democrats have always needed less savory types in their coalition in order to win elections. At least those people agree with the Democrats on economic issues and foreign policy. What group do you propose the Democratic Party replace those people with? Fundamentalists? Obama is stronger than Clinton among traditional Democratic constituencies, while it remains to be seen how strong he really is among swing constituencies. We won't know that until the general election.
