Question (Because I'm stupid about these things)....
...with the Edwards endorsement does Senator Obama automatically pick up his delegates?

1. Any delegate can vote for whomever he/she pleases
even Clinton or Obama delegates. Edwards can ask his delegates to support Obama, but they can do what they want.

2. Which begs the question
Why do we have primaries?

4. If he was the nominee then his delegates go for him in the first round
during the second round they are free to vote however they want

That said... the primary system is pretty much unique to the US.. in many places of the world party stalwarts are still chosen in
closed down, smoke filled rooms. That was the way here until 1968... don't think we want to go back to that system

5. Because
if we didn't have primaries, Hillary would have been anointed as the nominee a year ago. The primaries give us a chance to see the candidates in action.

Most pledged delegates will stick by their man/woman -- unless something comes along to change their minds.

3. That's true, but USUALLY if their candidate asks them to support
the candidate THEY are supporting, the majority if not all will do so.
