*****Update from the rest of the world******
Edited on Thu May-15-08 08:28 AM by hogwyld
As I've mentioned numerous times before, I travel a LOT to various countries for business. Well, let me tell you that as bad as it's been the past 6 years taking crap as an American for *'s stupidity, everyone has been really nice and excited about the prospect of an Obama presidency. So, the great news is that even before he's sworn in, he's already improving our image abroad.
I know we have a lot of work to do to repair the damage done, but with renewed respect and friendship of this planets other inhabitants, YES WE CAN!

One think to note: it always amuses me when people think that all Americans support the chimpster as if we're some brain dead mob. So now, I guess they'll think of all Americans as enlightened saints for electing Obama now...

Yeah, I know this is a waste of a thread, but what the hayle...

1. I was just in Japan recently - LOTS of Obama fans there, too.
And, in all honesty, a lot of Clinton fans as well.

Almost no Shrubbie or McCain fans.

The rest of the world is, from what I hear from others who have recently been in Africa and Europe and elsewhere, is that the world is ready for America never to have a Republican again.

point of this thread is and can't help but reduce it to what you can understand doesn't mean it HAS NO MEANING.

To ME and the thousands of others (perhaps yourself included) who travel overseas often KNOW what it was like going through the past 8 years.

After 9/11, i went overseas in Oct of 2001 and the caring and love that the citizens of all the countries I visited showed was overwhelming. They cared WITH us and cared FOR us.

Since then, things have changed dramatically. Now we are seen as the BIG BULLY and the resentment towards us is VERY real (although most realize it is not us but our gov't, they still feel that we enabled the continuance of that in 2004.)

The fact that they are now realizing that this is coming to an end and are excited about the Democratic candidate for the presidency MEANS SOMETHING to a LOT of people.

35. Thomas Jefferson spoke of the need for "“a decent respect to the opinions of mankind,”
That was long before America was the world's sole super power.

Now that American political, military, economic and cultural power encapsulates every nook and cranny of the globe, it is more important than ever that America has, "a decent respect to the opinions of mankind,”.

The less hate fear suspicion cynicism negativity on the planet, the better.
The more manifest goodness, gladness, life-affirming energies & efforts, the better.

So you don't have to give a hoot, but why bother adding weight to the negative? Do you think it helps?

41. Canadians love Obama. So much that we would want him as our leader (poll)
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/4/7/22222/34721/299/491939

In Canada, the Liberals and the Conservatives have been fairly close the polls for the last few years, producing two minority governments (with both parties lacking a majority in the parliament). But what if the Canadian Liberal party was led by Barack Obama instead of its current leader? According to the poll:

* As a Liberal, Obama would boost that party's support relative to the Conservatives, 33 per cent to 18.

* And if Obama was the leader of the Conservative Party, instead of current Prime Minister Stephen Harper, what would happen? As a Tory, Obama would boost relative support compared to the Liberals, 32 per cent to 15.

Harris-Decima president Bruce Anderson says when you combine the poll with current voting intentions, either party would win a landslide victory with Obama. Anderson says the poll points both to Obama's widespread, non-ideological appeal in Canada.

One of Obama's greatest strengths as the next Democratic nominee is his appeal to moderate conservatives (republicans). The genius of Obama is his ability to speak to progressive ideals in a way that is not threatening even to conservatives, and rather draws them in. Even when the conservatives are north of the border.
