Obama's sniper tale?
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/05/obamaclap.html

Is this another Bosnian sniper incident, where a Democratic candidate for president describes a scene involving some personal courage, but later videotape shows that maybe perhaps it wasn't really quite all like that exactly?

Sen. Barack Obama, the leading Democratic candidate for his party's nomination, is very fond of telling receptive audiences the story about how last May he walked right into the automotive lion's den of Detroit and told those industrialists they were going to have to shape up, change the way they do things and start making more fuel-efficient vehicles to protect our environment.

"And I have to say," the straight-talking Obama tells his chuckling followers, "that when I delivered that speech, the room got really quiet. Nobody clapped."

Well, in honor of Obama's return campaign visit back to Michigan this week, someone -- perhaps Republicans, perhaps someone closer to home politically -- assembled videotape of Obama's oft-told tale and spliced it side by side with videotape of that actual Detroit speech.

1. Obama can't keep his lies straight w/r/t to the auto industry, that's for sure.
When in South Dakota, Iowa, etc. he wins big political points by attacking Michigan and Detroit. His belated "make up" tour is too little, too late.

After seeing the minimal effort Barack Obama has put forward in Michigan (using it mostly as a backdrop for a self-serving Edwards endorsement announcement, not to address Michigan's problems,) I am predicting that McCain narrowly takes the state.

39. The OP is DEBUNKED right here with FULL VIDEO TAPE
Hah, I read the comments to the article and an apt reader DEBUNKED
THE ENTIRE BULLSHIT SPOUTED IN THE OP:

Erm... I'm sorry, but that video is misleading.

The clips from the speech in that video are from the END of the speech. Of course he gets some applause then.

But it's not like he's hiding anything - a video of the whole speech was uploaded by his campaign. Watch it -
http://youtube.com/watch?v=j1nno1El3-g - and what do you know, the room IS quiet. You can hear people cough.

True, there are a couple of points where he gets some mild applause. It would be incredible if there was no applause at all anywhere in the speech, particularly when he's talking about preserving jobs in the auto industry, but at many key points, like right after that when he talks about fuel efficiency standards - complete silence.

Simply put, his comment that the room got really quiet is true. It did.

38. Oh Noees, did he have his "applause proof" vest on at the time?
so your article claims that rather than his comments being greated with silence,
that they were greated with applause.

Thats pretty horrible! OMG OMGOMG hysteria!!!

I hope that like hillary, he had his protective vest on.

5. to be fair...
when he told them that they had to re-invest the cost savings on health care into making more fuel efficient vehicles, they clapped, but not very loudly, especially when compared to the average Obama rally. So on a relative "Obama scale" reception, it could easily seem like a 0... hence, nobody really clapped.

6. People are grasping at straws. One question:
Is that the ONLY reference he made to making fuel-efficient automobiles? The one at the END of his speech when he tied it into helping the automakers pay for health insurance? Or, was there a major point made earlier where no one clapped?

Easy to take a snippet and run with it.

But, maybe Hillary really did duck sniper fire. :sarcasm:

8. It's not unusual for Obama to tell people what they don't want to hear.
February 2008, he told the folks in Columbus, Ohio that 'When gas goes to $4.00 a gallon...' and the room went silent. He stopped right there and said that a good President will have to tell the people things that they don't want to hear, if we are to work together to solve our great problems. There was a murmur in the crowd and he went on with his speech. Yes he received a standing ovation as well. Face it people, we sometimes we have to hear things that we don't like.

12. Perhaps nobody clapped during that portion of the speech?
Doesn't take a genius to figure out that he's saying that a certain part of his speech nobody clapped. Otherwise, I could just find a 5-second window that nobody clapped during and therefore conclude that nobody clapped during his speech is completely 100% true. Face it, the only thing Hillary was dodging was the massive amounts of kisses from those little kids.

This is an absurd comparison. Sen. Obama's speech in Detroit was definitely poorly received by industry insiders:

"Obama talks tough on Detroit
Criticism of auto industry could make winning support an uphill battle":

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080514/BUSINESS01/805140387/1014

"Obama's Tough Talk Backfires in Motown":

http://www.newsweek.com/id/34740

"Bill Ford, Jr. Miffed by Obama's Criticism of Auto Industry":

Dear Don and Andrew,

I wonder if you consider yourselves objective journalists. Judge for yourselves -- here is the complete speech:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=j1nno1El3-g

And here are commentaries written at the time the speech was delivered by
(1) Newsweek:http://www.newsweek.com/id/34740

(2) Fox News: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,277013,00.html

Having seen the video and read through both articles, I think he is right and you are wrong.

Posted by: John Paul Telhomme | May 16, 2008 at 04:50 AM

Yeah, a standing ovation WHEN HE CONCLUDED HIS SPEECH. Sounded like he got little more than "pity applause" for his line about increasing fuel-efficiency to me.

This is stupid, and the premise that it's the equivalent of Hillary's sniper-fire comment is absurd.

16. This kind of reporting is exactly why I spend so much free time on the internet--
Week after week, I watch the newspapers and tv reporters distort the truth, and the only reason I know they're lying is because I spend all my free time watching/reading undigested news content on places like cspan, and of course DU :P

My friends are always shocked when we're sitting there watching the nightly news, and I point out to them that the news is factually incorrect.

I remember that Detroit speech because I watched it in its entirety last year.
His speech was not well-received.

17. Another reason I don't want the Clinton people running the country
Anyone who actually thought this was a "gotcha" at all, much less one on par with Hillary's various incantations of Bosnia, is an idiot. They are out there rubbing their hands together with glee over this? It is hard to put my finger on it, but in life there are just people that "get it" and people that don't. Whether it is humor or pop culture or politics, some people always seem to have a sense of what is cool and what is not. Some people don't and never will.

28. Everyone I disagree with?
Uh no, everyone I disagree with is not an idiot. However, anyone who would run with something stupid like this as a "gotcha" is an idiot. Now if my opinion of what constitutes stupidity is "hate filled spew", all I have to say is, you indeed have a broad definition of hate. But hey, it wasn't my intention to upset your delicate sensibilities, so if you are in fact one who is howling with delight over this so called prevarication, then please accept my apology for thinking you are an idiot.

27. That was reported in the Detroit Free Press, too - just a bit of puffery on Obama's part
The funny thing was that when he went and lectured the automakers, what was he driving at the time? A Chrysler V-8 with a Hemi engine. He has since traded it in for a Ford Escape hybrid, but that little bit of hypocrisy didn't go unnoticed by some Michiganders.
