Ted Kennedy transferred to the Mass General hospital
Edited on Sat May-17-08 11:14 AM by NotThisTime
Undisclosed reason for paramedics to be called....

He's an important ally to Obama and to the Democratic party, I do hope this is nothing serious

Updated to say that New England Cable News is saying stroke like symptoms per AP report...

3. It is serious.
There's no need to transfer someone from a full-service hospital by Life Flight if it isn't serious.

The doctors at Mass General are miracle workers. We will just have to hope for one.

9. They waited 2 hours to transfer him, I think that's a good sign, otherwise it would be IMMEDIATE
I have voted for him since I was old enough to vote & we just moved a few months ago... I hope he is okay... I have faith...

11. Well, you're an exception. I've visited heart attack patients at CCH, stroke patients, new mothers,
and broght people home from there with a broken arm.

It's not a clinic. It's a full service hospital. It has treated a number of my relatives over the years.

were no specialists here who could do it, so I went to Mass Gen'l.

19. They don't do a lot of chopping, but they are one of the BUSIEST ER in MA, you know.
Elective surgery, like hip/knee replacement, assorted nonlifethreatening organ removal, and stuff that is scheduled, is generally done offsite. They aren't huge, but they are busy. They've managed to deliver five kids in my immediate family with no issues. And that was before they got as fancy as they are now. They've got three hundred-plus doctors on staff.

And they have a PRIMO ER: http://www.capecodhealth.org/body.cfm?id=6

Cited five times in nine years as one of America's Top 100, Cape Cod Hospital is a 238 bed acute care hospital. Our Emergency Department is one of the busiest in Massachusetts, providing emergency services to 84,000 patients on an annual basis. We are a not-for-profit regional medical center with more than 1,700 employees and over 300 physicians on staff.

    Major service areas include:

Cardiovascular services, which includes 4 interventional cardiology suites for emergency and elective angioplasty, electrophysiology, and cardiac rehabilitation
The O'Keeffe Surgical Pavilion, which features inpatient and outpatient surgery in 14 operating rooms including 2 cardiac surgery rooms
The Davenport-Mugar Cancer Center, which offers cancer services in medical oncology and radiation therapy
Imaging services, which includes x-ray, MRI, CT, PET, ultrasound and nuclear medicine
The 38-acre Hyannis waterfront campus includes the 20-bed Cape Psych Center with inpatient and out patient mental health and behavioral health services; 14 medical office buildings; the Breast Care Center for mammography and diagnostic testing; the Infectious Disease Clinical Services ; and a hospital supported community health center.

Cape Cod Hospital is supported by the philanthropy of the community we serve through the Cape Cod Healthcare Foundation and the Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary .

FWIW, they are confirming "stroke-like illness" on NECN.

34. CCH is pretty primitive: anything fancier than a broken leg
and I'd want to go to Mass Gen or NEMC, too. I spent a couple of nights at CCH with heart-rhythm issues back when I lived in P'town; CCH in those days didn't have an electrophysiologist on staff, let alone on call. After that I drove myself up to NEMC when I was having trouble.

48. They are fully equipped for acute care, have an amazing ER, and are routinely
cited in the TOP HUNDRED HOSPITALS IN AMERICA list.

The ER sees eighty four THOUSAND people a year. They aren't primitive, at least not anymore. They've got over three hundred doctors now, to go with their two hundred some odd beds and fourteen operating rooms. They've come a long way with cardiac care as well--they are actually doing open heart procedures there now: http://www.capecodhealth.org/body.cfm?id=95 It's also designated as a "Primary Stroke Center" which is a huge improvement over how that place was run in, say, the sixties or seventies.

I remember when CCH was a single old building. It's come a long way since then. Now, it's on a "campus." With a shitload of buildings, full of doctors' offices, an outpatient clinic, all sorts of services.

The influx of retirees to Cape Cod had a massive impact on the quality of support that hospital is able to provide.

That said, if the condition is something that requires a lot of ponderous equipment, along with the 24-7 STAFF to read the results, he's probably way better off at MGH.

It would seem that they still don't have a definitive diagnosis, as they're going to continue to test him over the next two days. It could be just a situational reaction on his part, or he could have developed epilepsy in his old age--it happens. They've got to figure that out--and, as someone else pointed out, MGH is better at hiding famous people than CCH is.

27. I'm wondering if they were having trouble managing him. If he were well stablized, they
might have transported him by ground. It's not that onerous a ride, especially on a Saturday going TOWARDS the city. The fifteen minute zip to MGH makes me wonder if there's more going on. The fact that there's NO news is also worrisome.

40. He supposedly made a phone call from MGH, apologizing for not being able to make it
to the BEST BUDDIES thing. John Kerry is in the hospital now.

Apparently, if he had a stroke, they caught it early and it hasn't affected his speech too terribly.

That's per the local cable news here. They have a guy at MCH.

36. a seizure...
Doctors believe that Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts suffered a seizure at his home in Hyannis Port this morning, then a second seizure as he was being transported by helicopter from Cape Cod Hospital to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, according to an official briefed on the situation.

His condition was unclear early this afternoon, as a special police security detail gathered at Mass. General. Kennedy family members were called this morning and told to rush to Boston, according to sources.

The Hyannis Fire Department responded to an emergency call at the storied Kennedy compound at 8:30 this morning, according to the Cape Cod Times. The senator was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital, then flown to Boston. The newspaper published a photograh of Kennedy, strapped to a gurney, being carried to the chopper.

39. "I insist on being optimistic about how its going to turn out," Obama said."
EUGENE, ORE. -- Barack Obama spoke about his friend and supporter Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., as news broke this morning that Kennedy has been hospitalized.

“My thoughts and prayers are with Teddy,” Obama said. “He is one of my favorite people and so hopefully he is going to be okay.”

Obama said he has been in contact with the Kennedy family and hopes to get a better assessment of his health.

Obama, who is campaigning in Oregon today, spoke about Kennedy again while touring the Sacred Heart Hospital here.

“Ted Kennedy is a giant in American political history - he has done more for the health care of others than just about anybody in history and so we are going to be rooting for him and I insist on being optimistic about how its going to turn out," Obama said.
