Something I don't understand- they try to consistently portray FL as something repubs forced on them

didn't the bill to move up the primary date pass by overwhelming numbers?

I know it's convenient to paint this as a Republican move that the Florida Dems were dragged into kicking and screaming, but don't the vote results indicate otherwise?

1. 115-1
I think we should let the one vote count for Hillary and move on.

2. Sigh. It's a lot more complicated than that.
The bill to move the primary date earlier was coupled with a bill that Democrats have been asking for, for years: a bill requiring a paper trail for all voting mechanisms in the state.

And regardless, even if they voted no, the bill would have passed. The Repubs control the state legislature 2-1. Since the bill was going to pass anyway, Dems wanted to be seen as in favor of the paper trail (which can prevent election fraud in November).

7. so, in other words, FL republicans were trying to choose the democratic nom
by pushing this through, you are saying that Florida republicans made this an issue for democrats in their primary race.

sounds like just another attempt at voter fraud by them. imagine that, in Jebbie's state.

9. Sounds like there could be more to the story
I honestly don't know the whole history of the issue. But the other posts in this thread suggest it's not as easily excused as that. Still, I'm not suggesting I know how this all went down. I'm asking.

I was busy with a family illness when this was all going on, and I was still a peaceful, cautious undecided.

16. Here's something to consider
Minimum punishment for moving up the date was stripping of 50% of the delegates.

HAd the Democrats put up a fight, they would have lost half the delegates, but there would ahve been no ban on campaiging and Florida would have had a say in the nomination this year.

But no, the Florida Democratic Party got greedy, and it cost them everything.

19. Well, that's why they should have proposed more amendments
the FL Dem party defense is 'those mean Republicans were too clever for us'. Having looked at the video fo the legislative session, I call Bullshit with a capital B.

5. madfloridian has followed this extensively. The sad fact is the FL Dems did this with the Repubs.
If the Dem leadership in Florida wants to blame anybody, maybe they should be looking in the mirror.

6. I am not sure, but wasn't there some indication that the DNC would have had a different attitude
about Florida had the Democrats there had actually fought against moving up the primary date rather than joining the Republicans and embracing it? I thought I had once read something that alluded to that.

8. Yes And No
the final bill that passed was bundled with good voting reforms - paper trail.

Some Democrats will claim they only voted for it because they'd been fighting for the paper trail all along. They will also claim that even if every Democrat had voted against it, it would have passed anyway.

I think you have a mixed bag. I think some Democrats were wanting to move the primary and damn the consequences. Others really did oppose it, but their voices were drowned out and in the end they made a decision that didn't show a lot of political courage, but it was kind of a damned it you do, damned if you don't situation.

Dan Gelber (State House) begged them not to move the primary and the Republicans laughed at him.
Steve Geller (State Senate) said he had to ask them to move the primary and they laughed with him.

10. Even if the repubs outnumbered the dems,, the DNC could still have kept their delegates
as long as they went in "good faith" to prevent it, and while that is subject to interpretation, maybe the relative huge number of dems voting for the bill, coupled with a video introducing an amendment's against the bill but that was seen by many to be sarcastically phrased, played a role in the ruiling. Also, even if you take what they are saying, why should the DNC, allow republicans to determine the DEMOCRATIC primary calender, that's opening up all sorts of pandora's boxes

11. Homestead Amendment
That was Crist's baby and he wanted that passed ASAP. Nevermind the fact that the state was broke and it resulted in layoffs to pay for it.

I guess the Dems did not contest this so as to not look bad to the public here. Cannot go against a tax cut!

Just an opinion. I haven't lived here very long, but don't at all like what I see, in more ways than one.

12. The whole Florida thing was a result
of Democrats giving in to republicans on the primary date in exchange for the Republicans agreeing to paper trails. We would not be getting paper trails without the change in primary dates. End of story.

14. No the
bill would have passed without the Dem vote. They voted because they supported paper trails.

18. It's what I believe I heard from Robert Wexler.
Edited on Sat May-17-08 04:08 PM by FlaGranny
He said the bill for paper trails was brought by the Democrats. Republicans said okay but attached it to the bill for primary date change. Democrats voted for the entire package to make sure we got the paper trails. A vote against the date change would have been a vote against the paper trail. That's the way I understood Wexler's explanation.

Edit: Sorry, this is in response to post #14.

15. Tip of my hat to madfloridian for shining light on this.
FL Dems moved up the date, changed their minds, and the Rs laughed and said no way. There's a whole lotta blaming going on coming from the Clinton camp, but thanks to madfloridian we know EXACTLY what is going on.

17. While they did go along with the move
It would not have mattered even if it was forced upon them. While the Florida legislature has control over the primary date, the Florida Democratic Party alone has control over the Florida Delegate Selection Plan. The FDP could have chosen to ignore the state primary that was "forced" upon them and used a different delegate selection process. The most plausible options would have been either a caucus or a party run primary similar to what New Mexico had. While a caucus would have brought the same objections from the Clinton campaign we have seen from other caucuses, the party primary option really has no valid arguments against it. There would have been costs involved, but the DNC would have been happy to help. It really does not matter if the primary was forced upon them or not, the state party has control over their delegate selection process.
